  • With flows on many of Colorado's rivers falling, traditional summer fishing is just around the corner. With these drops in flows comes a variety of bug life. From caddis to golden stones to yellow sallies to PMDs, we're in line to see some spectacular summer fishing with these higher than average flows. Combine those prolific hatches with some of our favorite big water bugs and we've cultivated a collection of six flies that'll put fish in the net this July. Let's not forget that the banner days with hopper droppers are near. It's that time of year when you need to be well stocked with a variety of flies in a variety of colors and sizes because there is no telling what fish will be eating day-to-day.
Trouts Guides Scott Dickson and Danny Strine made a little time after guiding on a recent July day to hike into Cheesman Canyon and enjoy a little evening on the water.

Can you explain the rig setup for some of these flies? Like length and size of tippet, where to put split shot and bobber? I can’t catch anything at Cheeseman..... thank you 🙏

Indicator nymphing is what I see most people do there. Adjust the length of the tippet to put the fly at the same depth in the water column that the fish are feeding, which will change day to day or week to week, etc. I agree cheeseman is particularly challenging. If you want to catch some big fish there, you can strip streamers instead. I've had success there with streamers, I don't particularly like fishing tiny nymphs in winter when I go there like most people are doing. The people catching the most fish there when I go "off season" seem to use tiny black nymphs with indicators or double fly rigs. Hope that helps.
