I am so tired of the minimalist "trend". It's basically an absence of style being called "style". Clothing is bland, logos are bland. I say go big, bold, tacky and wacky all the way. I miss old school, over-complex ornate designs. We've had enough depressing dystopian drabness. You're doing the Lord's work!
Like most things we got going on right now, quantity over quality has really gotten to it's late stages where we get the cheapest versions of everything possible. This is not only visible in design but also just the longevity of products being entirely cut down to sell new stuff as quickly as possible. Nothing lasts and nothing is made with detail and care. Because that's just not a business model anyone wants. And it's depressing.

In 15 or 20 years, it'll happen again when excess once again becomes the norm and there will be a new wave of minimalism. It's completely cyclical
It's not a trend, it's a requirement in modern media. I suggest you take a graphic design class to understand all the concepts if you're interested. Complex logos have the issue of being unusable in certain places, unrecognizable in certain places and way more expensive in some. Design is not about looks, it's about function. Logos are not created for you, they're created for the company.

If your logo is so oversimplified that you can barely distinguish what service it's from or what the intent was (as is the case with some modern logos), it's fundamentally worthless on a design level as a logo. Yes, I understand that overly complex logos have issues, especially in this day and age. But "function" doesn't have to completely override form, because that's not what graphic design is supposed to be about to begin with. Some logos are just plain bad and/or boring. Simple or complex. There's got to be a better solution to this problem than simply going to the other extreme.

As far as the Burger King logo, "the old one" isn't that old. Before 1999 the logo was more like the one they have now.

Fun fact: Australia's version of Burger King (Hungry Jack's) never bothered with the over styled 90's logo. We've had the original logo since 1971.
