    I grabbed a mylar blanket and cut a circle, added a rubber band around my lens and put the myler inside it, Instant Camera Condom. My dad was a staff photojournalist for the Washington Post and used to do it for really wet shoots with zip lock bags and shopping bags that are crystal clear.

    Ok, so I have a 12 layer UV filter and mylar. Do you still need a ND filter for DSLR or is just recommend?

    Thanks! Didn't realize that I was only an hour and a half from totality, and thankfully it's an area I know well. Think I'd be ok with the emergency blanket and some auto tint over the phone and go pro? Thankfully I have glasses..

    Thank you SO much for this. I had pretty much given up trying to photograph the eclipse, but now I have hope again :>. You're completely right about the prices going up too; a lot of peeps don't have that kinda money. Going out to Canadian Tire today to pick me up some Mylar. Thanks again >v

    I couldn't put my hands on those glasses, but have welding lens10 and I am going to put some Mylar layers to improvise this thing...call me crazy, you don't do it at home. Also going to make my Filter, thank you!

    OK I am seeing the DIY COmmunity say use 2 to three layers, you did it with one? What were your settings and did you use a UV Filter to help prevent UV Damage to your Lens Iris/Shutter? I had one of these I made with a Paint Can Lid for my S-Series 200mm Canon Lense in 2017, when we had a partial here in Texas. It worked great. Like you I am going to make a couple for my Cell Phones (time Lapse as well) and then I have a 10mp Mini Video Recorder (don't laugh, it is old but still working, lol). I want to make sure to get all the video I can as well as pictures. I may even rubber band my phone to a Mono/Binocular (I have both) with a DIY Filter on the lenses. That is why I am asking about the layers needed, we are getting totality here in the Dallas/Mesquite Area, more towards the center than some of the other large cities in Texas.

    Looking forward to seeing your results Mark. You are certainly preparing well for this event. The last full eclipse we had in the UK was back in 1999. I travelled for 5 hours to get the best viewpoint ( Falmouth) and it was a great experience. Sadly I didn't take any pictures, I only had a film camera back then :-P

      +dunnymonster That is sad! Too bad we can’t use film. But I am hoping to get a lot of video. I am really looking forward to capturing the “diamond ring” personally 🌙

    97% reflective mirrored Mylar makes a perfect filter for watching and for your camera and binoculars and telescope i watched the eclipse in 1978 from Stonehenge in Washington state and filmed it and im 62 years old with perfect vision so this does work and is extremely safe ! I filmed it on a Kodak 8mm camera and got a great film that was perfectly exposed not over exposed at all. This time im using my phone. I will not buy the dumb over hyped comercial cardboard glasses that are the same thing. And i learned how to make Mylar filters In 1978 from the mainstream media news !😎😎😎😎

    So an emergency blanket is really basically all it would take to make a filter to safely photograph the sun? Captain Procrastination is my alter ego so I'm waaaaaaay behind on getting everything ready for it. Would it be possible to MacGyver a filter if I dissect a pair of eclipse glasses and used it on the front of the lense?

    • @thephotovideoshow
      @thephotovideoshow  7 лет назад +1

      Yes! You can absolutely disassemble a pair of solar glasses. Those would actually be better. At least if they are legit. But if you don't have a pair, a piece of mylar folder over, with minimal creases and wrinkles would certainly help you out!

    • @ForestRJ

      I would look through and the rule of thumb I used was if I could just make out the light element on an incandescent bulb (or the individual squares of a LED Light), without any real glare to it, then it was OK. Be sure to use a UV Filter as well, just as a precaution for the sake of the camera's Iris/Shutter. I think the first one I made in 2017 used 2 layers, given I was not in totality, so I got high reflective light from the sun off the moon edge, even got a minor sunburn, LOL. But I got some decent pix. I was stupid and forgot to shoot in RAW, now that is all I shoot (way more data points and workability).

    Is this pretty safe to use? I completely disregarded the eclipse until this moment and I'm freaking out, but at the same time I'm a broke student who doesn't want to melt her camera. Would this be safe to use with a, say, 55-300mm lens? Also, not sure if you'd be able to answer this, but unless I get my hands on some eclipse glasses tomorrow, how safe is it to literally glance over it for a second? Like by accident, not stare?

    • @zoomtat8452
      @zoomtat8452 7 лет назад

      It's fine if you just look at it for a sec, same as if you were to accidentally glance at the sun normally

      Don't listen to the guy above you're risking your eyesight you can go blind a few seconds of recording on a camera can damage electronics think of yours eyes.

    • @zoomtat8452
      @zoomtat8452 7 лет назад

      John Morgan The probability of glancing at the sun isn't any higher on the day of an eclipse than it is on a regular day. Are you trying to imply that everyone should constantly be wearing a pair of eclipse glasses? Either you misunderstood their question or you're just an idiot.

      I have been using mylar on my 20 x 50 Binoculars for years, for watching solar eclipses. I do not know whether these are safe or not. So far I have never faced any problem. Moreover, I have shown it to a very senior scientist. He has okayed them. In the childhood days, my father used to just blacken a glass on the direct flame edible oil lamp and we have used them a dozen times. A full disclaimer. Mine is not any scientific conclusion. I cannot produce any evidence for the same. It is solely based on actual experience.Whatever one wants to do it should do it his own risk.

    • @rpresser

      The filter manufacturers tell you DON'T USE MYLAR because they want you to buy professional filters. Same with eclipse glasses. Same with telling people not to photograph themselves. IT'S ALL ABOUT THE GOL DURN MONEY.

    Wait, he said you can't use Mylar to view the sun. I bought a telescope cover from Orion telescope cover that is Mylar and it's purpose is to view the sun. Either he is wrong or Orion is trying to blind me.
