Raking and cutting hay was always one of my most favorite jobs on the farm. I know this is probably dating myself but, as long as I had my “Walkman”, tunes and a bunch of spare batteries I was good to go for the day.
Thanks for bringing back my hay bailing memories. I also remember using a scythe back in the day having to walk fence lines cutting grass under fences... hot, hot, hot....
Grew up west river in south Dakota on a dairy. We put up alfalfa for the Holsteins to eat. We didn't have near the hay you guys put up. I still love the smell of fresh cut alfalfa.
Man, I love it when the farmer is baling hay! We live behind a farm that raises alfalfa hay, and after all these years I have learned alot about what they are doing. I held my breath when you reached into that hay, but I'll bet you don't have rattle snakes like we do. A farmer got bit this year by one of those buggers. And I tried to toss a bale over the barn one day, cause a snake was baled up. After that I was much more careful about hooking into one of those. Hey, at least I quit calling it fluffing instead of raking! LOL Stay safe and I hope you get the best crop ever!!
Nice thick winrows….I just wondering if you all get much dew at night..Years ago when I moved from Ohio to Wyoming I was so surprised to hear at 11pm, of course at night, the neighbors were baling hay at night..,I was in awe that they could bale at night..,In Ohio you cut one day, you wait a day or 2; check it for moisture and if we had any dew had to wait till after lunch to bale..So happy to see such super nice hay..,Have a nice day….keep on keeping on…
Love haying time. It means so much to farmers. No matter what type it is the animals need food for the winter months. My dad and I later in life always fed the poorer hay in the fall along with good hay till the snow flew then it was the top notch hay. Cattle came out of the winter like they were on grass all summer. God Bless you guys and your families.
When I was a child I remember going to field with my Dad. He drove a team of horses and grandfather and friends threw the hay on the wagon. The load got higher and higher and we just sat up higher. Those were fun days.
@@sleepranch They were. I loved the life on the farm. My Grandmother had a Jersey cow that she sold cream to the creamy .She made butter from the cream also. She had a few horses , sheep and silly goats. We had a dog named Buddy, he was a terrier and barked at everything. I was 8 when we moved to town, I was broken.
We try to leave about 3 inches but you’re right, this was the first field I cut and I was trying to go too fast. So I left more than desired but now I’ve learned from that! Haha
Is there something that you use to judge when it's time to cut hay? Our area is mostly cash crop very little hay, but it does seem like i remember something about alfalfa in blossom but it's been a long time . Thanks great video
Yep! We try to cut our alfalfa at 1/10th bloom, which is ideal but we don’t always get it cut right then. Sometimes there’s a little more bloom than that. The higher the bloom, the lower the protein content is but you also get a little more tonnage with higher bloom so that’s the trade off!
Great video, it is amazing how the Baler's take those rows of Alfalfa and turn it into a round Bale. Later on, it would be neat to send up a Drone and get some Aerial footage of the baling operation. It is great that you and Jacque get along so well, as you seem to work together a lot. Happy Haying. Have to say, that it would have been good to be in an open air tractor after eating the Taco dish. Haha.
Making lots of hay! Hope you get plenty of bales! Even the dry ground looked great, I have the twin to that Chevy truck you got there😃 great work trucks ,the door latches are wore and hinges started sagging so the doors don’t work so great , thanks for the video! Have a great Safe Happy🇺🇸💥🇺🇸 🍻Fourth of July 🇺🇸 💥🇺🇸🍻 To you Carson and everyone at sleep ranch!,👍👋
This is very interesting to me being from a city environment. The water content of the hay and how you check it in batches is important. I have a finance background and would love to learn more about that radio broadcast of beef futures prices and how it affects your decisions if at all.
I never ran a cab air conditioned haybine, looks like a nice day. That smaller tractor you had sounded like the little Ford diesel we had decades ago. Hope you all are staying safe and healthy.
I’m sure the taco pie smelled delicious and tasted it too. You’re right about the other. I’ll take a pass on that. And fresh cut grass always smells so good. Most of the time we have to wait til noon to start bailing, it’s humid here. Another good one, Carson! Thanks for sharing.
Damn cool video! I can smell it!!! Lol!! Thinking about getting one of those battery operated grease guns! Have several lever manual operated! Probably should spend the cash for one!
Hey Carson, The weather looks like it's helping you get good hay made, I would do anything to have your weather for haying yes I know there's a trade off of 3-4 crops verse's 1 but it's hard to get 3-4 good days in a row in Wisconsin. Stay safe
an umbrella is a good idea, when you get old and wrinkled like me all the sun damage will start growing Strang things on your face.. skin cancer is no joke !
Haha ya I thought so at first too but it was actually more operator error. This was the first field I cut and I was trying to go too fast, so I ended up missing some. But now I’ve learned from that! Haha
Don’t laugh, how many cattle does one bale feed in one day? What’s the cost of one bale? Thanks for keeping me supplied with steak and cheeseburgers. From St. Paul Minnesota.
No dumb questions John! It all depends on weather conditions but this last winter we were giving 1 bale per about 20-30 cows! I think it costs us about $40 to make each bale
Oh no, we pay a VERY fair price to graze the forest service land. We also do all the work up there, without ranchers and cattle grazing forest service land, the quality of the land would be depleted very quickly! Weeds would take over and native grasses would disappear, soil health would go downhill and wildlife would move off federal land onto private land. Cattle do wonders for improving ecosystem health!
Love it when my barn is full of fresh cut, sweet hay! Grateful you’re harvesting a bounty of hay for the winter!🙏🏻🙏🏻
Raking and cutting hay was always one of my most favorite jobs on the farm. I know this is probably dating myself but, as long as I had my “Walkman”, tunes and a bunch of spare batteries I was good to go for the day.
Thanks for feeding us, Carson ... and all you other farmers and ranchers.
Thank you!
Great job cutting hay Carson
Great job raking Carson
Thanks for bringing back my hay bailing memories. I also remember using a scythe back in the day having to walk fence lines cutting grass under fences... hot, hot, hot....
Always enjoy your videos.
Thanks Kevin!
Great video Carson
Thanks Kevin!
Yep, see you on the next one
smell-a-vision would be interesting, especially fresh cut hay
Always with thanks, much appreciated
🦘🍻
Thanks for watching Scott!
I enjoyed the haying operation...if we just could smell the hay!
Carson u have ur sleeves rolled up but still have those hot jeans on while taking. Lots of good quality hay
Haha yeah that’s right! Thanks Bill!
Very good video
Yields look great, an umbrella would definitely help! Thanks for the video!!
Thanks Ellis!
Haven't started here yet...serviced one haybine got one more to do...but it keeps raining
Awesome you’re getting moisture, hope you’re able to get out in the fields soon though!

Your door is being weird good job to you both. Nice looking hay.

Great news with the hay! Every bale counts right now. I pray all continues with great yields for you. You both are hard workers.

Do you guys not cut the feilds as tight as you can? It looks like the grass underneath the windrows is pretty tall for just being cut.

How many bails do you need to get threw the winter ?
About 3600!
This is very interesting to me being from a city environment. The water content of the hay and how you check it in batches is important. I have a finance background and would love to learn more about that radio broadcast of beef futures prices and how it affects your decisions if at all.
Yeah it really affects our decisions! Thank you, I’ll try and go into that in a video
Interesting accent Jacque has. What is his country of origin?
He’s from South Africa!

They are pretty nice! Stay safe and healthy as well!
How many horses do you have ? And how many bales do you need in the year ( horses)?
8 horses but we need about 3600 bales for the cows!
Check out Sonne farms baling videos they have a bale acculmater it lets you drop bales in a line, save them lots of time on pick time.
I’ve seen those accumulators! They look very handy, maybe one day I’ll be able to talk my dad into buying one;)
Let us know how many round bales you get? How many acres do you bale on? Thanks for a great video.
Will do! We usually hay about 1000 acres and need 3600 bales for the winter
