So rare that Dylan covers don’t sound like someone doing an impression. He captures the essence without losing his own voice

Knowing he doesn’t go around performing these songs for any other reason and he was preparing all week for the show sketches AND that he was performing “live” in front of millions of viewers - that intimate performance was spectacular and shows his talent in a most unique way. I just want to say I was blown away last night by his musical performances. I was afraid he was going to do a Bob impression and I am glad that he didn’t. He doesn't sound exactly like Bob while singing (his speaking voice is spot on though), but he still does a good job. If anything, he's less whiny sounding than Bob is when he sings, but I find him to be flatter as a result. Just my personal opinion.
It's not as complete a transformation as Austin Butler's was as Elvis Presley (ironically, Butler recommended the same voice coach he had for Elvis to Chalamet for A Complete Unknown), but it's still quite good.

This can't be easy. Dial up Patti Smith's performance accepting the Nobel Prize for Literature for Dylan. Remarkably moving performance, but Patti was crazy nervous. Dylan's shoes are not easy to step into. Bold choice for Chalamet and his reps.

Elvis Presley recorded the song on May 26, 1966, during a session for his album How Great Thou Art. The song originally appeared as a bonus track on the album Spinout. Dylan once said that Presley's cover of the song was "the one recording I treasure the most"

And his songs are so beautiful that they ARE sad, but sad in a universal way always hinting at how fleeting this all is.

The first official recording of this song by Bob was in 1963. That was *sixty two* years ago. And this song, this music, still hits as powerfully today as (I can only assume) it did back then. Compare that to last week's "musical" act, who will be forgotten in 6 months. Music means something more than just twerking to a beat. Real music is right here, in this performance. Thanks Tim, and thank you, Bob Dylan. A real musician.

While Dylan did perform this self-written song in 1963, it was not a song that was released on any studio recordings in the 60's. A version recorded during an April 12, 1963 concert was finally released on "Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. II" in 1971.

@@aljustal6554 Which is what I said. I didn't say "first official RELEASE" ... I said first official RECORDING. Beyond "official" release, it was massively bootlegged because of its popularity. Which I would attribute to why it was tapped to be included on a Greatest Hits in the first place, since it was never a "greatest hit" without being on an actual release. lol

There's something about singing without a lot of gimmicks with lighting and jumping around. Just singing with a guitar and small group of musicians. They used to do that more often on TV. Chalamet isn't a dynamic singer, as he has a soft voice, but it is well suited for this type of song and arrangement.
