the lipstick isn't expanding. the plastic wells are disfiguring. this is the reason I stopped using the Japonesque palette. the plastic wells are too then so when the hot lipstick hits the plastic it reacts and bubbles towards the lipstick. the Wells should hold at least 1/2 a lipstick but don't add heat to these palettes! they will disfigure!
The japonesque palettes buckle when melted lipstick is poured into them. That's why it seems as if it is "expanding." Other palettes with thicker plastic don't have this issue though.
Regardless of all the worried people re: does the plastic melt, I think this is a really cool idea. Especially if you want to fit all your makeup into a small space and make you storage more conpact. I also like that you didn't entirely destroy the lipsticks, so now you have the best of both worlds! xx
I don't recommend melting your lipstick if you are using japonesque palettes. The plastic melts very easily. I ruined my palette by doing this. An expensive mistake to make
I agree. I stopped using these palettes because the plastic is so thin! for the price $28 they should have thicker plastic so that you can melt your lipstick down
But...isn't that made of plastic? You probably have melted plastic in your lipsticks now. Plus you're wasting sooo much lipsttick on that spoon. I can see doing this with some cheap drugstore lipstick (in a non-plastic container) but certainly not an Illamasqua!
***** I love when people are so wrong they have to resort to breaking out the vocab lessons to try and prove they're smart. Love, plastic burns easily, especially flimsy plastic like this. That's the reason the lipstick in the wells suddenly "expands", because it's burning the plastic. And you realize microwaving food in plastic containers is proven to cause cancer, right? Someone please help this girl understand heat and plastic before she gives herself more brain damage.
The heat required to melt the lipsticks is far less hot then it would take to melt the plastic.(haven't you ever put a gel liner into the microwave to smooth it out?the liner melts the plastic container doesn't.if all plastic melted we wouldn't have TV dinners (the same cheap plastic The wells are made of
This is a great way to keep lipsticks for both personal use and professional palette! As long as its cut and melted before any use! Great video Marlena! xo Michele
Looks gorgeous honestly. BUT I think it is absurd, it damages perfect lipsticks!! You usually have to reapply the lipstick during the day, so instead of taking a single tube what will you do? Carry the full palette? Is not practical because the makeup is not likely to last. It could be good for lipsticks that has few product left, otherwise just put some dams color stickers at the top to look at the color.
+missymani not for professional use; it's much easier to bring one palette in your kit with you on a job than 50 different bullets. Also it makes it easier to decide on what colour to use - rather than opening and closing each tube until you find the one you want. It honestly depends what you want to use it for.
Aimee Speight Sometimes melting the lipsticks change the formula. That is why I say it damages the product. I can't recall the names of the brands but some of the lipsticks I melted became very...waxy, more like lip gloss instead of matte. Poor babies, they never came back to be themselves jejejeje. But I see your point.
28$ are you crazy lol you could get the insert at MAC for 2$ and the empty palette from MAC also for 8$ so thats 10$ for a palette thatll fit 24 lipsticks
@flyushkifly I actually have that palette n its not very durable. when I melted my foundation into it, the temperature was too strong n the divider inbetween, warped its shape totally. But i gotta admit the lipsticks looks SO neat n pretty!
The lipstick does not over fill the lipstick is just a lol hot for the plastic and melts it try packing the plastic out and look under it melt the plastic
I don't see the point in cutting the lipstick all the way to the bottom and then putting it back together again. That really is so silly. You can just cut the top half off instead and you should use a small metal measuring spoon to melt the lipstick instead using that big spoon and wasting.
If you cut it from the top you lose the pointed shape of the lipstick which makes it easier to apply straight from the bullet, that's why she cut it in the middle, to keep that shape intact
@fedeANDresistenza cool! I like the resourcefulness of reusing a CD case - and since the product is in a pan, you don't have to worry about the BPA content of the plastic.
@owly x One video I watched said that if you hold the spoon too close to the flame where the flame is touching the spoon then it will change the consistency but if that's not the case it might just be the lipstick formulation.
Great idea. I was just looking at some lipsticks I have that are more than half way used and would love to get rid of the packaging to gain more space in my makeup storage. I would probably try using something like metal eyeshadow palette pans. I am going to try this next weekend. Thanks
@sparklesandolives The density of water changes right? I just figured it would perhaps be the same in this case. I was only suggesting that i didn't think that anyone should be worried that the 'expanding' was the plastic melting and mixing with the lipstick.
I love this tutorial-thank you so much for teaching me how to do this. I used the tip of a knife to flip out the metal pans in a used eye shadow compact, washed it with hot soapy water and sanitized it with rubbing alcohol, and filled it with melted lipstick. Loads of fun!
This is a great idea. Lisa Elridge did this to her lipsticks. Its super convenient to have all your lipsticks in one place and alot more hygenic as well.
@HilaGabay Pencil insides and gel liners are different ingredients, but if what you mean is can you melt out the inside of a pencil? Yes. There are a lot of videos on how to "depot a NYX pencil" you might check. I don't know how easy it would be to apply any other kind of pencil once "depotted". I'd say try it out on a cheap pencil first...
Do they make one of those palettes where you can fill eyeshadows and blushes and whatever else besides just lipstick? So you have it all in a little book like that?
Does melting the colors change the quality of the product? And are there types of finishes which are better suited for this or can any be melted down? Thanks for the tutorial :)
totally awsome, Im so excited to try that out. This would work great for a couple of lipsticks I left in my car last summer that melted into a funny shape.
this is really cool and a great idea for travel! I'll probably start trying with a less expensive lipstick and if I feel like I can do it alright I'll move on and try my nice ones. Great video!
I love this for mixing colors and finishes on a makeup palette. I am making my "Flash" palette in this manner. I will be filming in about a month. Thanks Marlena for the tip, no pun intended, on melting the BOTTOM HALF! Very good!
@flyushkifly thats exactly what I was thinking. Thats what stopped me using a plastic one. Instead I used the little metal pans and then stuck them with glue to inside a CD case.
Would a wax warmer (Those round warmers people some time use as coffee cup warmers) work better for setting the spoon on it to melt the lip stick? You could melt more than one lip stick at a time that way.
@stepherdoodle16 i think to not spoil the look of the lip stick , also she said u won't need a whole lip stick maybe that will be a lot to put in that space and it won't fit
wow i cant believe it expands like that!! im ganna try this because i have so many but i never use them... maybe if they are in a palette ill use them more!
@gemneilson Silicon, Gallium, Antimony, Bismuth, and acetic acid all expand when frozen. There are always a few exceptions. GENERALLY though when substances are frozen they do not expand
Keep up the great work. I love all things makeup, but it is sometimes really difficult to take tips from these very young girls Thank you for all that you do.
@shmidgetpro She doesnt wanna melt the top off, or else the lipstick will be very ugly. This way she melts the middle and the top stays pretty, like she didnt cut it at all!
@mariansabele I think its because if you reattach the top part then the shape of the lipstick is still the same and not flat so you can still use it out of the tube? I think thats why anyway xD
@kalipaus2 Thanks for your input. Fortunately, I realize it's the plastic rising and not the lipstick expanding. Therefore, I don't need to watch your video. My original post wasn't directly referring to the numerous other posts regarding this issue. It was in reference to the few (don't recall who at this point) posters arguing over chemistry in general, not just the rising of the plastic palette.
@flyushkifly yea me too, no one really uses CD's anymore it's all MP3, so there's a ton of CD cases on their way to the landfill, give the CD case another use and were all good! :D
@candygir87528 Honestly, I think it does with the inexpensive brands. I did this for my daughter using some NYC,WnW,Rimmel lipsticks and they smelled waxy and dried up. I don't know if I'd be willing to take the risk with my high end lipsticks.
do you notice the quality of the lipstick changing due to being melted and cooled? just curious if it takes on a different sheen the way chocolate will if it's not tempered.
Do you find you have issues with doing this to a shimmer lipstick? I have done this method with a shimmer lipstick and I find it changes the whole consistency of the lipstick. Any tips?
@MosMaPrishGjumin hehe, me too for a minute! I was glad to see other makeup artists confirm my suspicion about the plastic warping. Marlena even says on her blog: "Just be careful not to over heat your lipsticks as they can melt the plastic insert." Maybe she just misspoke in the video - opening the issue up to tons of debate! I'm still worried about the BPAs in the warped plastic leaching in to the lipstick. yuck.

+Elana Greene Which palette we can use instead of the Japonesque?
+Amy B. I use the mac palettes with inserts. there is 2 inserts you can choose from for lipsticks.
The japonesque palettes buckle when melted lipstick is poured into them. That's why it seems as if it is "expanding." Other palettes with thicker plastic don't have this issue though.

+Elana Greene which palettes are you using now?
+artplosion I started using the MAC pro palettes with the 12 or 24 well inserts! the palettes are $8 and the inserts are $2 a piece
Elana Greene oh cool thanks!
where did you find your palete?
But...isn't that made of plastic? You probably have melted plastic in your lipsticks now. Plus you're wasting sooo much lipsttick on that spoon. I can see doing this with some cheap drugstore lipstick (in a non-plastic container) but certainly not an Illamasqua!

When you heat plastic it releases toxins and yeah, it's melting....do you not understand how heat works or...

the lipstick color you have on this is really nice and i really like the first color that you show melting. what are they ? thanks!

+missymani You're not wrong! I personally wouldn't melt the lipsticks; rather I'd mush them into the wells. Saves the palette too, haha!
The palettes are a good idea for if you are a makeup artist. If you make the palette, then you don't have to carry around tons of lipstick tubes.
28$ are you crazy lol
you could get the insert at MAC for 2$ and the empty palette from MAC also for 8$

Hey, do you know where I can buy the small magnetic refill pans to pour the lipsticks in those?

Emily Routledge yeah or you can just apply the lipstick at an angle to create the same edge.
Eliza Rogers but then you'd have to do multiple applications for that edge to form again.
Understandable but I just see as a better option than waisting product
Eli babee She didn't actually waste any product though, she just cut some for her palette.
@makeyoupretty7 yeah BB cream is like a tinted moisturizer. Heavier than a lotion but lighter than a regular foundation. So yup! Hope this helped u!
@fedeANDresistenza cool! I like the resourcefulness of reusing a CD case - and since the product is in a pan, you don't have to worry about the BPA content of the plastic.
cant you use a old paint palette?
i feel like you could, as long as you disinfect it first :)
Cool idea but kinda seems like your wasting lipstick D:
@Jsunsetsky87 how would you smooth the top where u apply on ur lip? you dont want to apply a lipstick with uneven surface
Hi, love your channel. Where did you find the lipstic wells?
Make-up geeks really ok sure
I love this! I have one question though... how long did u cool the pallet and where? freezer or the fridge?
@CrazyyWild21 So, does that mean that it's no longer safe to use the lipstick because of the gases the plastic expelled? Thanks!
Great idea! & it was totally amazing to see just how much the lipstick expanded.
@owly x One video I watched said that if you hold the spoon too close to the flame where the flame is touching the spoon then it will change the consistency but if that's not the case it might just be the lipstick formulation.
@raihein The lipstick also condenses as its heated and re expands after cooling.
Great idea. I was just looking at some lipsticks I have that are more than half way used and would love to get rid of the packaging to gain more space in my makeup storage. I would probably try using something like metal eyeshadow palette pans. I am going to try this next weekend. Thanks
love your make up in this vid, so natural and so gorgeous
@sparklesandolives The density of water changes right? I just figured it would perhaps be the same in this case. I was only suggesting that i didn't think that anyone should be worried that the 'expanding' was the plastic melting and mixing with the lipstick.
Thank you for all the trouble you went through to do that. I like the idea and options, maybe I'll try it.
@mariansabele You're right, it never seems to reattach properly for me. It definitely makes more sense to angle the cut.
@yekaiv I like the look of the palette with the unmelted lipsticks like Lisa does.
does the finish of the lipstick change when you do this?
I love this tutorial-thank you so much for teaching me how to do this. I used the tip of a knife to flip out the metal pans in a used eye shadow compact, washed it with hot soapy water and sanitized it with rubbing alcohol, and filled it with melted lipstick. Loads of fun!
I love ur technique
Your eyebrows look amazing!!
Love this! Have you ever melted some colors together to create your own color? I think I might try it!
@stepherdoodle16 I was thinking the same thing but I think she wanted to keep the formed top in the case so that's why.... maybe!
what lipstick are you wearing its really pretty
this orange color top looks really nice on u. it makes u look brighter.
This is a really cool idea! I'd love to try it out
where can you get a palette like that. Does it matter what kind of material it is--or is something better than the other?
This is a great idea. Lisa Elridge did this to her lipsticks. Its super convenient to have all your lipsticks in one place and alot more hygenic as well.
@yekaiv as liquids cool, they expand, that's why they're expanding when she pours them into the palette.
Great Tutorial. I travel alot and this is a great idea. Where can i get the empty palette from though?
Amazon
This is such a creative concept! Thanks, Marlena!
@FoxyBJ the manufacterers melt their products to mold them for the lipsick tubes, its the same thing, doesnt change the lipstick at all
@HilaGabay Pencil insides and gel liners are different ingredients, but if what you mean is can you melt out the inside of a pencil? Yes. may i please know where to buy that lipstick palette case? thank you

Nice! I never thought to do this! And this palette is so cute! Thanks for the tip!
wow i cant believe it expands like that!! im ganna try this because i have so many but i never use them... maybe if they are in a palette ill use them more!
@starryemokid that's amazing! thanks!!
I like your look in this video!
i love you! you are such a genuine person and i can tell from the way you laugh and talk in your videos :)
You are sooo gorgeous!
I used my nail art wheel, it held rhinestones and I finished them so I just cleaned it and use that it's actually cool and works well
So clever! I LOVE it!
When they expand do u end up with more product?
@gemneilson
Silicon, Gallium, Antimony, Bismuth, and acetic acid all expand when frozen. There are always a few exceptions. GENERALLY though when substances are frozen they do not expand

You are so smart and creative!
@Am1ism I'm pretty sure that silicon explands when its frozen.
I love your videos :) you always make me smile, your such a sunshine.
would you apply the lipsitck with a brush or your finger?
more DIY!! I love your makeup in this vid.

what litpstick are you currently wearing? love it!
omg what shade was the revlon lipstick you first showed?!?!
I will probably never have a need to do this myself, BUT I absolutely loved this! Such a great idea!
Really handy tutorial thank you, I have some lipsticks I never use and I forget about them. I am going to try this.
Love your natural make yp in this video, very beautiful
Can you do a tutorial on your makeup in this video? It looks so fresh and pretty. I love the lipstick you have on. What color is it?
can you melt down long wear lipsticks or will these lose their staying power once melted and re-cooled?
@flyushkifly yea me too, no one really uses CD's anymore it's all MP3, so there's a ton of CD cases on their way to the landfill, give the CD case another use and were all good! :D

Wow you look so beautiful without any makeup on! Well im sure u are wearing makeup but it looks very natural and just gorgeous! Like always!
Where do you get the thing you put the lipstick in ?
