THE DREAM LENS IS HERE! So jealous of Canon / RF mount owners. Hope this puts pressure on Sony to make one ASAP. The fact it has IS, Par-focal, servo zoom ability, internally zooming, 82mm front, lens foot, lockable and smooth iris, all in one lens is so perfect.

Lenses like 10-20/4, 24-105/2.8 and 28-70/2 benefit a lot from a bigger rear element, therefore much harder to do on a smaller mount.
Sony have the Par focal 28-135mm F4 PZ, power zoom, OSS, internal Zoom, lens foot. Obviously long in the tooth being released in 2014. They just need to update this with their newer compact lens design to accommodate the larger aperture and possibly ND. Let’s hope…
could sell half of my e-mount lenses for this one

Yes I tried to make one, and it was not easy.
I, personally, have never succeeded making a 24-70 2.8 lens
But yes seriously it must be very hard to design and make some focal length lenses with decent apertures.
Tamrons 35-150 T2-2.8 is an awesome lens that no other manufacturer has managed to achieve

Best modern lens for dolly zoom. Canon's lenses are really different, from the 180 VR lens, f11 tele lenses, this fast zoom and a faster small zoom range 28-70 f2. Really unique kits.

YESSSS! I’m so happy now I held off investing in a R5C and a set of RF lenses. I can just get this lens with the camera and rent other lenses as needed. This focal range is all I need most of the time and at f2.8 fast enough too for most normal situations. Very exciting!
I have a feeling the button vs rocker has to do with the electronic parfocal design. It needs to be able to control the focus compensation at a set speed.

Dang, just invested in the R5C and, as a workhorse for the not-so-artsy-bread-and-butter-jobs the 24-70 2.8 this summer. its a good lens, however the 35mm more on the long end would be very much welcome for tighter shots without switching to a a 85 or 135. also, internal focusing would be much appreciated for heavier matte-boxes. it is bloody expensive for a bread and butter zoom but around 1/3 more than the 24-70 actually seems kind of justified when comparing it this way. maybe time to change as soon as its available with a good rebate in 1-2 years or so.
Thank you so much for a fantastic preview. This does look as if the mission impossible has finally been accomplished. Only if the Variable ND filter system could also be incorporated with the RF lenses on the R5C!

Push button servo and the distortion warping during zooming are pretty big turnoffs for why you would want a servo zoom lens imo, especially the price of the PUSH BUTTON servo zoom compared to the proper rocker servo. While the corrections being in the digital realm for focus and distortion arent as nice as them just being there to begin with optically, hopefully thats something that can be improved with firmware. Otherwise its definitely a very solid lens option for video, especially for us people that grew up loving camcorders.

There's no doubt now that all Canon Cinema cameras going forward will be RF with the amount of R&D that went into producing this lens.
I've had this lens for 2 days now - its a handful, and totally worth it - yes, its 'longer' than the F4 24-105, but not by that much when at the 105mm end of business. going from F4 down to F2.8 allows much more indoor shooting w/o external lighting
How is the vignetting at 24mm and f/2.8? What body are you using it on?
Is there any noticeable shift in weight distribution when zooming in/out? I see it’s internal zooming which is great, but when it’s used with a gimbal, will zooms mess with the gimbal balance much or at all?

The manual focus distance scale has to be implemented for video too. This is ridiculous that it's not available.

Is the manual focus linear on the RED? That's a common issue with other RF lenses on non-Canon bodies

Your move Sony! I'm a fx9 shooter and I've been using the 28-135 almost exclusively for 3 years on that camera... And I would easily drop 5-10k on a 20-120 PZ 2.8 e-mount I could use for everything I do.
The higher-end servo has a multipin connector for Canon broadcast lens accessories? Which ones, specifically? And do they allow proper creeping from/to a complete stop? Finally, do the broadcast controllers add two thousand or more to the total cost?
Great video. Thank you. Curious what you think about 24 mm as the widest end of this lens? Normally that would be great for me but with the crop factor on the C70 it can be a bit tight. On the C70 I reach for the 15-35.
Wow wow wow!! This is only the 2nd Canon RF lens that I feel is actually worth the hefty price tag, after the 28-70 f2, which is actually heavier than this lens. Looks like I need to start saving up!
Canon after all these years of me jumping to Sony have actually made me slightly think of selling my heavily invested Sony kit (2-fx9’s, fx6 & fx3) because of this lens. Hurry up Sony and upgrade the 28-135 with these specs!!! Canon did all the R&D work just copy this!!!
28mm isn't wide enough for broadcast work! Sony need to introduce a FF 20mm or 24mm to 70mm+ zoom that is parfocal and doesn't extend.
Is the focus by wire capable of linear and 100% repeatable focus? If not that's kind of a dealbreaker for video. I also wish we had seen some tests with lens correction off, as if we're shooting with a Raptor that's the image we'll be getting
Many thoughts:
Comparing the servo zoom unit to the grip for the 18-80mm misses the fact that the this is the full servo unit and not just the controller. In fact, I would guess the servo grip could actually be used to control the servo unit on the 24-105mm. It is still very expensive.
Does this zoom maintain transmission while zooming while stopped down? That has always been the downfall of Canon’s photo lenses. I have some hope since this lens does not extend.
I had been hoping for a full frame CN-E 24-105 t4.4 that matched the usefulness of the 18-80mm in S35. This lens is very interesting from that perspective.
Have you tried balancing it on a gimbal? Wondering how difficult that is with R6 or R5C.
I know it's not popular but I love the 24-105 f4 if I am travelling with a small kit
@cvptv I just got the lens and It looks like the optical image stabilization of the lens is not compatible for the C70. Can you confirm?
After watching this video I have even more questions than answers. No doubt this lens will be banger with Canon cameras. But I'm curious how it will be working with other brands, for example with RED's Komodo & Raptor. My biggest concern is how electronic parfocal function will work with non Canon cameras?

True. We’ve been using the EF-s 17-55 2.8 IS. Cheap plastic lens but 2.8 all the way through with decent image stabilizing. Works great on super35. This is new lens is what we’ve been wishing for.

if this lens got EF or PL mount that will be great....Canon's consumer level camera doesnt have c log2 , and not many people use Canon cinema camera nowadays...they got a lot of good lens with nnice quality and price, but the mount prevent we use it on other machines.
Love the in depth review! But damn, is the noise and image detail of the R5C during the sharpness test really that brittle and digital looking when zoomed in like that? That's disappointing. Great review and amazing lens though! Wish I could afford one

I'm curious why zoom lens manufacturers haven't designed electronic par-focal operations into other lenses. Super useful feature. Surely most autoffocus motors are capable of this with the right firmware modifications
Fuji kit lens has it. Absolute trash as the focus is lagging behind zoom

im currently using the canon R3 , thinking on either getting this lense , or instead getting the 24-70 2.8 with a combination of 70-200 f2.8.
im wondering its best to get just the 24-105 2.8 or rather get the other two lenses i described for hybrid shooting of video and photos ?

Late to the party but regarding different angles of view in comparison to the older lenses: If you kept the camera at the same spot and just change lenses, did you check distances between your subject and the lenses front element? I may well be wrong, but assuming the new 24-105/f2.8 to be longer and field of view being dependent on the distance to the front element and not the Sensorplane, a slightly closer framing should be expected?🤔

Man. I'm kinda mad Black Magic didn't go with or wasn't able to use RF on the new BMCC 6K. I could make a decent amount of money with this lens shooting docs, live performances and events. Kinda makes me wanna go with a C70 instead.

The real question is, can you control the zoom inside of the C70?
I wonder why canon doesnt see the possibility of offering a nice zoom AND manual focus grip that integrate into the camera/lens software. even at a very high price i am sure many people would shell out the money compared to third party offerings if they would offer a streamlined integration. you could build such nice rigs with this.
Well the Komodo is S35, and as this is RF, you cant use a focal reducer, so how would one see the vinette on a komodo anyways?
Also, I don't have any RF lenses, so maybe this is common knowledge I am unawares of; but when you change the function buttons on the lens, is that info kept in the lens or the camera? Like if I make custom function buttons on a C70, then put it on a RED Komodo, will I still be able to use those functions?
Its a function of the camera. I’m not sure if RED can even communicate with that feature of the lens.
But its a universal function of the camera. So whatever I set the function ring to, it changes at the camera level and all RF lenses are subject to it.
Komodo is S35 but the Raptor is VV, slightly larger than FF, so vignette has to be expected there :/

Size and weight. If it started at 20mm, filter size would likely be 95mm.
about 3 months ago I asked a B&H employee if canon were going to release a 24-105 f/2.8 because I didn't want to drop 2k on a 24-70 if 24-105 was around the corner and he assured me that Canon would never make a lens with that zoom range and aperture 'its just not done"

I dunno about kills off....budget and weight will always be a consideration and f4 versions of the 24 105 exist in practically every mount for a reason.
Yeah I’m not sure what your talking about for half the money i would say the RF 24-70 is the best way to go if you got the money then go with the 24-105 2.8 but saying it kills the 24-70 that could never happen
Thinkin he means it kills off the need for those other lenses concerning his budget and needs. Others will surely still prefer either lens for certain scenarios.
Personally I don’t know that I could sell my 24-70 2.8 and replace it with this new lens full time. I love the size, quality and range of the 24-70. Adding an extra pound and more length is tough for all-day events.
This lens is for more nuanced shoots and I want one, haha.
it is heavy and expensive. I wish that the good quality RF lenses were lighter and smaller .... this makes the camera so front heavy for handheld or gimbal work. Certainly the quality is excellent, but I wish they had light lenses that focus quick for video on gimbal
Would love a 24-105 internally zooming 2.8, however that servo unit is a joke. Way too expensive for what it is, and the most awkward button placement. I can't think of a single way to use those buttons comfortably, especially if going hand held or on a shoulder.
12:55 Comparing the ZSG-C10 with the optional motor for the 24-105mm F/2.8 is disingenuous. The motors for the 24-105mm F/2.8 are very similar, to what is included with the CN-E 18-80mm and 70-200mm. The 20-pin version should also allow the use of the ZSG-G10 Zoom grip on the 24-105mm F/2.8. It's the same connector.

it will not happen as the flange distance is too short to stuff anything between the sensor and an RF lens.
