I don't get why someone is trying to improve a 1900 diesel engine when current technology is saying 1225 years ahead of it and does not polute?
because it does not need a remote energy source, transport, charge and battery system. It has its own power generator built in. What you say is a small inconvenience. It was a big one, like 40 years ago. you have not adapted your view upon this disadvantage during the many improvements since then.

Mining resources, their refinement and the production itself are extremely energy intensive and polluting processes. Energy required to pull these off mostly isn't clean , so is energy used to charge completed batteries. On top of that you have very poor longevity of said batteries which require replacement every 2-3yrs which is often not financially viable, so you end up with even more waste (whole EV lands in the junkyard) and need to produce even more vehicles. To throw to the mix only small percentage of batteries is recycled, because it's cheaper to produce them from scratch than recycle. Actually it would be less polluting to drive the dirtiest diesels which last for 50yrs than BEVs that last for 5yrs. If you want to be eco-friendly, then take into consideration whole process from the very beginning to the very end. Repair instead of replacing. Don't go after newest and fanciest every time it comes out. Don't fucking consume.
A two stroke diesel can run on used vegetable oil or biodiesel without any modifications, thats as renewable as it gets. As a plus no children had to mine cobalt for this engine unlike a li-ion battery.
Still used in the largest of engines and seem to be quite clean when running..

you realize you need fuel to burn the electricity that's used to charge those EV's right? And producing EV's is more polluting than an ICE car
These engines are used on ships, in generators, in mining equipment, etc. not in passenger automobiles.
