Disney's Underutilization of the Trackless Dark Ride Technology

  • With the premier of Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway and soon enough, Remy's Ratatouille Adventure, it appears Disney is really embracing trackless dark ride technology. I will however be upfront in saying that I believe the technology is actually being quite underutilized and we're going to be taking a look at other attractions both within and outside the Walt Disney Company, to see how they can better innovate.

      If you haven't seen my video on Efteling, I cover their trackless dark ride called Symbolica. I recommend going and watching a ride-through of that because it has a lot of interesting design principles that would make a lot of sense for a new trackless Journey Into Imagination.

      I think you might see something like that in the future, in fact I would almost bet that your idea is in the plans. It interesting but it is my understanding they had considered all but retiring Figment at one time but people love the character. A trackless ride might be one way to go but IMO people are going to get tired of these trackless rides real fast. The journey into imagination show building is huge. If I could have carte blanch and unlimited budget to remake the ride I would like to see a technologically advanced 2025 version of the Peter Pan hanging ride type of experience. Figment being a dragon and all you could be flying and imagination having no bounds it just seems that a hanging/flying ride with a relaxed pace and story would be nice. And with added wind effects increasing the perception of speed and an awesome new soundtrack you could get a real adrenaline rush especially if you then had a drop or two before they unload you out into the gift shop.

    The daisy scene is VERY out of place. The screens in Runaway Railway hopefully hold up due to its animated style compared to other attractions where the screen just seems low resolution and dated a year after it debuts. Rise of the resistance could have had so much more movement like hiding behind the legs in the ATAT room or maybe a force push / pull that was more powerful from kylo ren.

      I know I am not original with this thought but that one scene with daisy duck has always annoyed me by its lack of context and I think it has to do with the fact I had seen video of trackless Cars land vehicles dancing much the same way and I recall thinking they would find a way to incorporate these dancing trackless cars into the Micky's RR ride. But they just threw in that scene with no apparent reason. I was there for the opening day of the ride and rode it twice that day and it was a letdown because the show scenes were here and there with no actual story other than the picnic. And while some had said it was just emulating the wackiness of the cartoons my mind goes back to the fact I had seen those dance studio moves before and nope... IT really was just stuck in there with zero relevance to the ride story.
      It is easy to be an armchair critic and pick at everything. The ride's mapping projection walls are truly entertaining so crisp and clear and groundbreaking. And most of the younger people seem to really love it. I have been on it about 30 times and I can recall while walking down the halls out of the ride a number of times there being 13 year old or so young kids being highly critical of the ride to their parents and the lack of a story and hodge podge of scenes. One thing is clear and it is this ride is a vast improvement over the ride it replaced and the long lines at it all day seem to suggest Disney Did somelthing right.

    Disney has been relying on 'technical marvel' too much for their recent rides. Like, okay, sure, the projections are cool, the trackless ride system is fine, but like...that's it??? At least Mystic Manor has a creative plot and there's a lot to look at and take in, and the animatronics are spectacular! They make up for the rather plain ride pattern with sets, projections, and a cool narrative. Runaway Railway is just projections.
    Also, the later scenes in Enchanted Tale Of Beauty And The Beast feel rather plain, because yes, while you are taking up maximum space and doing something cool with the ride pattern, you're really just looking at animatronics for 2 minutes. The dream sequence in Pooh's Hunny Hunt at least is crazy, with different characters, movements, and wacky colours to make the scene feel more energized. In ETOBATB, especially in the Something There scene, you're just looking at Belle and Beast. Now while they look cool, they're sort of just standing there. They don't do much other than sing.

      I'm glad we agree on some points. I've seen a lot of criticism for Beauty and the Beast, and so maybe I can't comment on it since I haven't ridden it, but I do think I perceive it more favorably than other people. That being said, I'm the kind of person who will stare at set pieces and try to figure out how everything works on an attraction, so perhaps that's why I seem to like how it takes its time. I do agree that it could have done more in its scenes, but I do like the design philosophy of how it uses the trackless technology to utilize a smaller footprint.

    Did you know that the ride systems for Poohs Hunny Hunt and The Enchanted Tale of Beauty and the Beast are totally different from the other track less dark rides Including: Mystic Manor, Remy's Ratatouille Adventure, Rise of the Resistance, and Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway? The first 2 as well as older ones run on a magnetic strip or something else similar, whereas the other 4 rides go off of quick charge batteries that are guided by computer mapping. My Grandpa was an Imagineer as his company was the company that got to patent to make this ride system only for Disney. The company is located up here in Petoskey Michigan and is responsible for the creation of the ride system and the batteries needed to run the ride. They are crazy high voltage batteries that quick charge in 30 seconds and can hold a 2 minute charge, so they have multiple charging points throughout the rides when ever stopping. So next time you ride one of these rides, look for the charging spots.

    Very interesting video. Disney has been relying on alot of overly techy stuff for their attractions recently and it honestly feels like they care more about making people go "wow" than actually making a great attraction. Battle for Sunken Treasure at Shanghai Disneyland for example is a really cool, jaw-dropping ride, but once the "wowness" goes away, you're left with an unpolished, very wonkily built attraction. Also, I personally think that the Ratatouille ride is by far the worst designed trackless attraction Disney has built so far since it tries to put very passive vehicles into an action scene. One of my favorites, but can't deny that it's not really built to utilize the technology haha

      I've always wanted to go on Shanghai Pirates, but I think you're right. In addition, one of the strengths, in my opinion, of the other Pirates rides is their detail and set dressing, which Shanghai seems to be missing. I haven't been on Ratatouille, but it struck me as trying to emulate Universal's screen based attractions in the same vein as Spider-Man and Transformers, but not really understanding what makes those work. I also agree that the Ratatouille ride is a terrible trackless ride. It is everything I don't want from a trackless ride, it is pretty much all linear, the only scene with actual physical theming is the pantry scene. It uses screens for almost every scene, the ride vehicles are not anything special. And what annoys me the most is that Disney is advertising this ride like it is brand new even though it is a clone of a ride that opened in 2014 in Paris.

      Having ridden Battle for the sunken treasure, I think their proportion of screens to sets is higher than ratatouille and the blend of them are on par or superior to hitherto industry standard of amazing adventures of spiderman. Also the boat on the track technology is well utilised to focus the riders' attention to specific set pieces akin to the second or third gen omnimover ride technology.

      definitely lol. even though you can still see the marks on the floor from where the ride vehicles are meant to go i think that’s why this technology is really only used in dark rides, so it’s harder to see than it would be normally…. again though that hasn’t rlly worked too well. i think the concept is fun though and is still executed well amongst many of the rides that use the technology.

      I think they are placed there purposely for safety, so that the crew know at all times that the trackless vehicles are following their path. Although they might be used to guide the riders attention somewhere which I think is stupid as it takes away the unpredictability of them.

    One of my biggest problems with trackless dark rides is that they seem to be incapable of navigating anything other than completely flat services; I do recognize that they might not be able to do that for safety reasons, as going too wild could tip the vehicle, but it would be interesting to see a version that could lock onto rails for sections as they do with the elevators now.

    The video of daisy's dance studio made my heart sink because several times the ride has broken down and we had to sit there for an uncomfortably long time. When you are on a ride ten minutes can seem like an hour. These trackless rides are simply not fully perfected yet. The Rise of the resistance ride goes down regularly, sometimes for hours and even when it is running the large gunner scene has not been working properly for perhaps 6 months or a year and they seem to have given up on it. They used to close down the attraction when they wouldn't work but now it seem to have two of the three guns just sit stationary with only one moving forward and back. Not surprisingly that was my favorite sequence on the ride because it was like a real life representation of the overused factory conveyor belt sequence where you are dodging dangerous machines like we have seen in star wars and even one of the final scenes of the Mickey' Runaway Railway ride. They look like large battleship guns but they too are simply a trackless ride vehicle fitted with a prop on top. I believe that the vehicles are just too close together for the wireless technology to keep track of.
    Another example and perhaps the least dependable examples of this trackless technology are the show pieces in Universal's Borne Stuntacular which stop or breakdown, sometimes 3 or more times in a single show. They restart the sequence or sometimes skip it and move on. I would hazard to say that 40% of the shows I have seen had to be stopped at least once. These systems have a lot of room for improvement and to the credit of the designers and the parks, the majority of these shutdowns are purely for safety purposes and not actual mechanical problems.

  • @willowby

    I have some issues with this. Yes I can commend some rides for making good use of trackless ride vehicles. Rides like Beauty and the Beast, however, I do not find that just having a large room with vehicles moving around each other is the best use of the technology. I hold rides like Rise of the Resistance and Mickey and Minnies Runaway Railway (wow these names are getting long) in a pretty high regard and I believe they use the trackless technology really well and tell a story well. I do completely agree on the twister scene and the dance studio from MMRR though. Its not like you could just put a pure linear track into those two rides and they would be as good.
    I spent the past year and a bit looking at every little detail of Rise of the Resistance including the entire track. Surely you can agree that the use of the trackless vehicles in the room right after the station is a good use of the technology, there are so many paths in there. And all the times the ride vehicles reverse, the worst part of ROTR in terms of the technology is from after the bridge to kylo ren near the end, even then we have huge cannons overlapping the path of the ride vehicles. There is also the large amount of side to side movement that is used throughout the whole ride. The point of what I am saying is, the trackless technology is integral to the way ROTR works, less so for MMRR but I like how it works.
    Another issue you mentioned was how you just race through the scenes and don’t have time to see everything, this is a limit due to the quick dispatches of sets of ride vehicles. The Beauty and the Beast ride has massive groups of people. Which means the scenes need to be massive, making the floor which needs to be flat also huge. And there are about 3 times where they put a set in the middle of a scene. Its just a “dancing ride”. I also have my own criticism of the rides animatronics. They have so much lost potential, they could move so much more but Disney decided to use 4 second loops instead.
    I also don’t think it was clear whether you were complaining that the place the ride vehicle is going next was too predictable or the scenes were too linear.
    I suggest if you have not seen to look at Popcorn Revenge at Walibi Belgium. It has great use of trackless technology and makes use of a tiny footprint the same time.
    I appreciate this video, thanks for what you said I will remember it! :D

    • @PoseidonEntertainment
      @PoseidonEntertainment  3 года назад +7

      Thanks, and I appreciate your lengthy analysis!
      First, let me summarize that my main issue is that I feel the attractions themselves are both simply too linear and unpredictable for utilizing trackless vehicles. I believe that those two things go hand-in-hand, in that Pooh and B&TB during their dancing sequences break the linear path and it's up to the rider's guess where they're going to go. Obviously I understand that these paths aren't truly random, and that with enough experience you could probably predict where they're going to go, but for the average guest, there will be enough variety to keep it interesting. The same applies with Pooh and Mystic Manor, in that there's a degree of randomization in what scenes you experience and how you see them.
      I also just really like the idea of how trackless vehicles can utilize such limited space. Empire of the Penguin has that little dancing sequence around the load area and the icicles, lengthening the ride time for a relatively small space, and I just went and watched a ride-through of Popcorn Revenge, which actually seems to serve as the perfect example of this point. I'd rather have attractions with small footprints be fulfilling experiences when you can continue to move the RVs back and forth. I'm glad you suggested it, because I wasn't aware it existed but I definitely would have used it as an example.
      I also take your point about how the vehicles can tend to sway, but it's not anything that couldn't be done on a track. I'm thinking of Indy, Dinosaur, Spider-Man, Transformers, etc.
      One thing that me and a lot of people seem to disagree on though, is the entertainment factor of trackless dancing scenes. I seem to view these more favorably and B&TB especially seems more impressive to me than it does to others. I think I just like it because it's something different and is a whole other design philosophy. As much as I really like the animatronics used there too, I also take your point that they have repetitive movement and it's not something I really thought about.

    • @willowby
      @willowby 3 года назад +3

      @@PoseidonEntertainment I completely agree on the possibilities of using trackless technology to make a small space used to its fullest. And I would have loved it if there was literally any randomisation on any Disney darkride. Well, actually there is on Aquatopia at Disneysea which you should also look at if you haven't. Maybe the appeal of a bunch of vehicles moving together in a large room just isn't for me, and that's ok. B&TB is certainly a ride that has not been done before. But it has a massive footprint at the same time as using trackless doesn't impress me.
      I never really got the appeal of not knowing where you were going next. I always thought that was more a design of the scenery. Like how in Popcorn Revenge there are many paths you could go from any point, also I know the full way that ride works (in pathing) and I can confirm that there is at least a bit of randomness every time you move. Rides like Rise of the Resistance and Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway would not take long for you to learn the path. And I know they don't. It would take me a very very very long time to learn the path of B&TB mainly due to the number of vehicles.
      The things I like about trackless vehicles is that they can go to anywhere ina scene to move the story organically. I also want more randomness in rides. I feel they took an easy route for B&TB by just making big rooms. You could probably fit Popcorn Revenge once in every scene of that ride. I like how Rise of the Resistance makes it feel like you could go anyway with false doors and by hiding exits behind you. And I believe the load station for ROTR is one of the best examples of the possibilities of trackless darkrides.

      @willowby 6 месяцев назад

      I want to add on to this 3 years later. I have now had the chance to ride Enchanted Tale of Beauty and the Beast and I found it so amazing, I cried. I think the argument of the massive scenes still kind of is valid, but only for the Something There/Second scene but for every other scene in the ride there is still a high amount of intimacy in the way the vehicles move around the scenery. Also the much more spaced dispatch times but the 60 people per dispatch capacity is really not a problem for the pacing of the ride. In every dark ride I dare say that none of them manage to give me enough time to appreciate a scene and thats not to say that ETOB&TB lacked rerideability, I rejoined that hour+ queue and I really want to again, the scenes progress so much as they go and with 6 ride vehicles there are many different experiences.
      As for Rise of the Resistance, though I still have not been on it. I do still think it looks amazing. But yeah the story could have probably been told without trackless vehicles BUT... I think the integration of the vehicles into the story was really well done and that almost required trackless vehicles.
      I also got to ride Pooh's Hunny Hunt and I fell in love. Such an awesome attraction. Trackless rides haven't really advanced much since 2000.

    I think there is something small that I dislike about trackless dark rides. It's the fact that I'm somehow distracted by the people in other cars because you're kind of exposed. When the ride is dark that is no problem but with Symbolica I find myself to be somewhat exposed sitting there compared to the older dark ride systems from mack, where you're sitting in a more cozy personal car. Also I feel too overwhelmed with the 360 degree view. You don't know where to look. I rather have them pointing the car and showing you where to look. When you enter a new scene in Symbolica, you're looking right at the people in the next car. I want to have my own little space like in the Haunted Mansion.

It could be said that Splash Mountain isn't impressive because it uses the water flume technology that had been around for some time. But, it's the storytelling, theming, special effects, music, characters, and storyline that makes it stand above what existed before. Although, each ride doesn't have to surpass the ride before it. The jungle is probably the biggest dark ride I’d ever been on- and it was breathtaking. Those dinosaurs were so active and so damn big….they had to be. I know I was only a kid…but they were h u g e, and they wasted no space at all. They used the whole space as you cruised into an intense thunderstorm on your way through. I understand your desire for a more versatile Trackless ride however when taking into consideration the theming, story, and other tech used to enhance the rider's experience, you really are giving the rides way less credit than they truly deserve. I'm not a die-hard Disney fan myself and I find great value in criticism as it pushes companies to innovate rather than getting away with cheap old tricks, however, when criticism is thrown all over without providing the appropriate praise for the things done right, it tends to come across as pointless complaining which leads many to disregard all points brought up as a whole. as someone who has been on these rides myself and has experienced a vast majority of the Disney attractions offered in North America, I have to say that these attractions themselves are some of the best Disney has to offer and really left me in aw after experiencing them. there are many other attractions at Disney, especially new ones which really do deserve criticism to this degree and I think that when looking at attractions we should be a lot fairer in how we view them to allow a more constructive environment where real improvements can be made to come to fruition. Nice video but you forgot two VERY important rides in the timeline. First is Aquatopia at Tokyo DisneySea, the second trackless ride after Pooh's Hunny Hunt. While another linear version of this technology, it's important historically because it didn't use the system in a dark ride. Antarctica, the first trackless ride system built in the US, was clearly influenced by Pooh's Hunny Hunt, like pretty much every Disney dark ride since. But Luigi's Rollickin' Roadsters was more influenced by Aquatopia. While it would be hard to claim this ride was an inspiration for any of the dark rides that followed it, it was definitely the inspiration for Daisy's dance scene in MRR.

    I agree with your points to an extent. While yes I believe the ROTR and Runaway railway both could technically have more innovative ways of using the trackless technology I believe the uses differ for each ride. For example when on rise I don’t think they want to implement the randomness that you were saying they could. I believe they want it to be linear but use trackless technology for different specific scenes such as kylo with the force, the drop pod scene, driving in between the cannons etc. while with runaway railway I can agree that a bit more randomness could’ve been used but I believe the best thing for that ride is to slow down everything. Sometimes you don’t have enough time to admire the different sets in that ride and it would help the daisy’s dance scene not destroy the pacing of the ride.

    I think Hollywood Studios didn't do itself any favors taking out GMR, their headline dark ride, and replacing it with MMRR. GMR was still an impressive ride with realistic elaborate sets and a cohesive narrative (even with the voiceover replacing a large portion of the cast script). MMRR's story is a lot more subtle and the sets aren't supposed to look realistic.
    Mickey and Minnie are on their way to a perfect picnic. Then two things happen:
    1. They go over a bump and lose their picnic basket. (This happens in the pre-show)
    2. Mickey crashes into a track switch and breaks the engine from the rest of the train.
    The ride transitions from scene to scene make sense if you put them in the context of the source cartoons (watch the croissant one) and advance the runaway train story. The second more subtle story is Pluto trying to return the picnic basket. Be on the lookout for Pluto next time you ride. The problem the attraction faces is that the narrative isn't spoon fed with an audio voiceover. It requires the audience to pick up on what is happening and as the majority of riders aren't that observant nor have they seen the source cartoons which themselves are of a more disjoint style. The attraction is lost on them.
    The second common criticism of the attraction that I don't understand is the sets. They are excellently constructed and themed to the style of the new Mickey shorts. They intentionally use a planar 2D in 3D look. I quite like the look.

    • @PoseidonEntertainment
      @PoseidonEntertainment  3 года назад +1

      I can't agree. The issue I have with the story-line of the attraction is that it's paced so poorly. It's very much like the Transformers rides that Universal keeps cloning because that too has far too much going on to be digestible without a fair repeat ride-throughs. It's not like Pirates or Haunted Mansion where the sets continue revealing more with repeat visits, but just throws too much at the audience.
      I think the overall design of the attraction is poor. What exactly is 2-and-a-half-D? It's a lot of flat walls with projections and the animatronics are disgusting. I believe that Disney Imagineers just didn't really know what they were doing and found themselves just kind of delivering "good enough" so as not to delay the ride any longer. The blend between the floor and walls is absolutely terrible and the whole thing feels hollow and empty.

    • @austinrtyler
      @austinrtyler 3 года назад

      @@PoseidonEntertainment I think 2-and-a-half-D is referring to the cartoons that exist in the foreground. Goofy in the engine, Donald in the hot dog stand, Chubby in the barn window. It probably extends to the physical props like the water in the fountain, Pete, and the factory scene where the medium is projection but the scene has depth. But I'm just speculating.

    I would love to see more of this tech come out of the dark into immersive worlds. Luigi's Roadsters at California Adventures uses trackless vehicles out in the open and they are just dancing. But it's a thoroughly enjoyable experience because of the world around you and the unpredictability. Similarly, Radiator Springs Racers uses great indoor and outdoor combinations to immerse into the ride. Racers definitely needs the track for the high speed dynamic portions, but for a purely story based ride, I think you could use a trackless system to do some great things outdoors in a well themed environment.

    while i agree that Runaway Railway looks flat, that's kind of the point, as it's based on 2d cartoons. i do totally agree that Disney is underutilizing the trackless ride systems, and that they need to add more variety to the separate ride paths, but I suppose that becomes an issue of real estate, as they would have to make separate paths or whole rooms for them to go in, and that takes up additional land.

  • @Banjo_Tails

    I have always felt the storm trooper reveal getting off the ship is wasted space and a bit pointless.
    I would have liked to have this large room as a segment of the ride itself with it under gun fire as you weave in and around cargo and some ships like the atat room. It would have been a more powerful wow factor and addition to a large wasted space for a 15 secs to walk through.

    • @PoseidonEntertainment
      @PoseidonEntertainment  3 года назад +3

      I'm going to respectfully disagree. In my opinion, that reveal is actually the part I find most impressive because they had the audacity to create a room that large. I get why the stormtroopers don't move much, as they are standing "at attention". My issue with it isn't the scene itself, so much as Disney promoted this attraction as having the level and number of animatronics as other iconic attractions. They aren't the same thing at all, even if I personally feel that the scene works in its context. The other issue I have with the room is the large screen. I get what they were going for, but the Star Destroyer always seems to be experiencing noticeable issues in how it moves. I'm not sure what the technical term is, but it tends to "lag" across the screen.

    • @willowby
      @willowby 3 года назад +2

      That room is only slightly bigger than the ATAT scene and part of it houses the ship. If this scene didn't exist and say we just got off to a small room our excitement would not be as high. The room sets the scene for the star destroyer and I believe makes the rest of the ride actually feel like it is in some massive ship. Plus, the removal of it would make it difficult to get onto the ship, maybe they could have done a small version of it, but it's not like that would be taking much less room. The hanger is important for Rise of the Resistance because it gives you an idea of what the star destroyers size is, it isn't sooo big, maybe you could have squeezed in 2 more scenes at the expense of ride pasing.

    • @orlandotouristtraps7410
      @orlandotouristtraps7410 3 года назад +2

      Funny but walking into the large hanger has been one of the high points for me. It reminds me of the Star Trek experience in Vegas when it was open, when you got teleported to the bridge of the Enterprise. The big reveal is amazing but I feel it needs to be jazzed up. Right now it is like walking into a church or mortuary. I was there the day it opened and have been on it many times. In the beginning they would load you into that large room and give you a long time which was really too long because after the initial excitant people quickly began chatting about where they were going for lunch or what attraction they were going to next and it ruined the experience. Now they rush you through almost too fast. I think maybe if they had some commotion like droids interacting or power tools and sparks or something way off to the left maybe it would bring it to life.
      I am sure they thought this all through and weighed the pros and cons of everything. Anything you add that is interesting at all will cause people to stop and get selfies with. Maybe this would be a good thing? Or a pain.

    It didn't have to be this way. I was impressed with the Pooh ride, but it's not an E-ticket attraction. Without levels it seems like Disney is abandoning the invention and immersiveness that costs money, in order to get by with a linear vehicle that can't deliver thrills.
    That's my problem with Mystic Manor. To me it's just watching an experience rather than being immersed in it. It's neat, but there are no thrills or real surprises. I don't understand why they can't have a track that goes over ramps and bridges, even if it's just to spiral downward like at an airport parking lot. Yes, an airport parking lot is more fun than Ratatooey's Rotting Food Adventure. I can say that the facade of Mystic Manor is as perfectly designed as anything they've ever done. It's truly a masterpiece. But once you're inside, where are all those other mysterious floors of the building? It beckons you into a multi-story experience and doesn't deliver.
    My feelings about the B&TB attraction though... The AA's are awesome, but there's SO much more that could be done. SO much more. First, the best Disney rides have a "void" area to settle into the experience - Pirates, Mansion, Big Thunder, etc. This one takes you directly into the first room and it seems really startling. Once the objects are supposed to be animated, it's a screen of plates and some things on a table. There should be flying plates and a lot of motion overhead. Without it, the whole scene is really weak to me. The windows on Disneyland's Main Street have more Wow factor. Same for all the other rooms in the ride. If they had something going on overhead it would add more life, movement, and visual excitement and really make it an emotional experience as well as a technological one. I think it's a terribly underimagined opportunity.
    Love these videos. Thanks.

    So there's a big consideration that Disney has had to make, especially with Rise. If they make the ride more complex and make more use of the technology, they add time onto the ride length. It's already a ride that takes a few seconds to fully book for the day and travel blogs and videos suggest people book multiple days at HWS just to make sure they can ride it once. They can't really afford to make the ride any longer and further reduce the number of people who can ride in a day.
