  • Giant Hubs Episode 5: Rungis Paris - A look behind the scenes of the world’s largest food market.
    Rungis International Market is the world's largest wholesale market for fresh produce. Fish, meat, fruits, vegetables, cheese and even fresh flowers are sold here every day in quantities so large an entire train station and highway exit has been built to serve it. Being just outside Paris, Rungis serves many Parisian restaurants or great standings. The market has distinguishing clients and only the freshest, highest quality products can hope to be sold.
    Each day, more than 6.000 trucks arrive at the Rungis Market. 30.000 employees and customers flock through the overall 9 big halls on the 232 hectare-area. It’s a city of its own. The waste of the market is recycled and the energy genereated by the incinerator is used to heat up the market - and even Orly Airport!
    10 pm. Rush hour in Rungis begins at the A40, the biggest market hall for seafood in Europe. Wholesaler Pascal is specialized on high quality seafood from France. His goal: to sell all his products within the same day. --- 00 am: High noon in the meat pavillion. Butcher Christophs works between innumerable halves of pork and beef. At 5° Celsius all night, the temperature outside doesn’t really matter. ---- 01 am: Now there is hectic in the fruit pavillion.
    Supplies are checked, prices defined. You can find the most exotic creations here. What happens to the fruit that cannot be sold? ----- 06 am: Now, thousands of trucks, delivery vans and cars are in a hurry to get back to their customers, restaurants, supermarkets. Now, the market begins to sleep-till the evening, when everything starts again…

    The whole idea is on another level, I like the organization, attention to details and the purposing on every activity undertaken. This is unlike our country Kenya where people only individualise such projects and lose the bigger interest that would be long term and benefit the community at large.

    This serious of documentaries on "Gaint hubs" are a very good lessons to improve the performance of existing poorly managed markets around the world. I loved the entire content of this particular video but sad not to hear the word "farmers or fisher mans" or a very short clip like a farm, processing units or fishing facilities which demonstrates the origin of the produce and strong hands behind the produces(I understand the primary purpose of this movie.)
    The other question I would rise for discussion is however, What efforts are in place to encourage the producers beside the payment for the produces? I belive there should be some way of supporting the farmers. Like in a way (just random Idea) a very small fraction of bonus that will be deducted from the whole seller from each sell that directly goes to the particular farmer that produce that particular produce. Those small bonus could be ear tagged as a grant to support imprivment of the production process and quality only like build some farm infrastructures, buy farm implements or other project the farmer wants to complete for sustainable quality supply for Rangis. Whole sellers Otherwise good job boys!

      I agree. I mentioned this in my own comment. This really could have been made a series to include the farmers, slaughter houses, fisherman, pickers: You know what really goes into the quality of the products.

    The Yiwu market, also known as Futian, has become the largest wholesale market on the planet. It has dimensions spanning 5.5 million square meters and extending over 7 km. From this market come almost all the products that will go to Chinese bazaars around the world. The market in Paris is tiny in comparison. Market in Paris 230+ Hectacres.. Market in China 3200+ Hectacres...

    Just a comment. Most English speakers would not know what the word “entrails”means. In English most people call them offal.

    • @desireedm70
      @desireedm70 Год назад

      You might be correct but I did know what it meant. It did not take me long to realize that when the wholesalers said produce they were referring to all the food products not just the fruit and vegetables. In the U.S. we call the fruits and vegetables produce but we do not call the meat and seafood produce.

    • @gregjohnson720
      @gregjohnson720 Год назад

      I would tend to think that most British people would use the word offal. Many Americans might say entrails, but a large portion of the population might even say “guts”. (Yes it sounds horrible!).
