It sounds like you have a sensible plan for projects to do over the winter. We're rushing to strip, restore, and paint windowsills before we get any serious rain. A number of years ago 'distressed' wood was huge. I recall seeing very expensive 'hand-scraped Brazilian cherry wood' flooring advertised. We have a breakfast room and computer room/library (probably a sleeping porch when the house was built) that originally had layers of linoleum covering the floor. The wood underneath is 'vertical grain fir' in about 3 inch wide planks, running perpendicular to the 1 inch white oak in the rest of the house. The color and grain are really nice, so we just had it sanded, stained, and finished, flaws and all. So yes, I agree that your door proudly wears it's scars. :)

You can use the same methodology as I mentioned above if you have dry rot wood in your door jamb behind the hinges! you call it a door frame.

Shower- I stayed in a efficiency hotel in London where the shower opened directly into the room and it wasn't awkward at all. Makes maximum use of the space. Also, the chateau renovation channel 'How to Renovate a Chateau Without Killing your Spouse' had to put a bathtub right in the guest room. It looked like an elegant feature rather than awkward retrofit.

Since the basement will follow 1920s styling, you should consider using flexible “tin” ceiling tiles when you’re finishing the room. Depending on the installation method, you could still have access to all of your electrical lines as opposed to poking holes in drywall and then having to patch it.

You are doing a great job on the house and the videos are a pleasure to watch. But your roof and foundation issues seem to never go away. Of all the things you could do to make the project go faster and easier, getting professional help to do those two items will speed you up by years. Maybe someone like the electrician who helped out would be willing to pitch in and help move it along for the advertising.

I think it would be cool if you used "warm" lights for the "electric" lights and "cool" lights for the "gas" line, or vise versa. That way you can have the lights to keep you awake, and also the lights to have the authentic yellow coziness.

Your rehabbed basement door is Re: the drafty plywood door blocker. You can chink the racks around the plywood with strips of rags ( I would prefer strips of foam rubber, if you have some). Properly done you can cut the draft by 99%. It’s a great temporary fix. Old houses are drafty. I’ve got a laser thermometer that I use to hunt down draft sources, and then chink them until they can be properly addressed.

Perhaps you can repurpose the Doctor's cabinet doors as doors for the bathroom and another location, remove and re-use the cabinet shelves (since they look built in) thereby adding another 12 or more inches in width to the hall way you'll make between the bathroom and the back door in the basement?

Great work! 2" foam insulation over uninsulated walls and cold doors works great to keep out the winter during construction. This is what we did in our 1912 house during the first winter before we gutted it completely in the spring. We now have R11 + R5.5 foam insulation in all the perimeter 2x4 wall cavities with another R8 coming soon. We also rigged up a tiny wood stove in the basement as back up emergency heat but we mostly use it now for leisure and entertainment. Stay warm and safe!

So here I am 😊, am one of them silent subscribers, Ive being watching you guys for quite some time , am originally from the UK , am myself and then my hubby renovated a 120 yr old large row house in Northamptonshire, but really was very easy to what you guys are doing ,it had being looked after, so it was mostly stripping of ceiling, carpets and tiles, woodwork and small building project, but my reason for commenting after all this Time is the door , the door that you apologized about, the door that could tell so many cool cool stories , it was beautiful totally the best door in the house, well In my opinion … lol just a little fun fact , we placed the last screw into the wire basket that was in the wardrobe, and as I gave my husband huge huge kiss and asked him what was we going to do with all the spare time know that we had completely that 2 yr project , he just winked at. me and said we would find something to do , well the very next afternoon I had to go to the store , the next morning I had the solution I had asked him about the day before , but first I made him a coffee and gave him it with really strange stir stick, he looked at me ,and took the stir stick out of his coffee , and next thing I knew was he took the lid of the stirring stick and he started to cry , yup I was pregnant, we had being trying for 5 yrs and had an appointment in that month to go see fertility specialist, I found out I was 4 months along , anyways thought I would share that little snip bit of information, my baby girl Lucie Jayne is know 31, and-hoping to be a mother herself , soon I hope :)

Have you thought about hiring an intern to help with smaller tasks around the restoration site? Barring the cost of insurance, you might be able to hire a college student who gets school credit for their work with you. I know some universities offer that type of arrangement. You don't pay the intern - they work reasonable part-time hours with you in exchange for credit hours at their school.

I'm curious though...you're paying homage to Mr. Brown upstairs and the vet in the basement...but have you considered setting aside any small area to do up in "your own" style? So future owners or generations could look back at this time? Maybe the basement kitchen will fill this role. Just a thought.

Did I miss an episode on the plastering of the 2nd story rooms. I recall you were having great difficulty because it was either too cold or too hot for the plaster to set properly. I keep hoping to see that back room on the second floor beside the gutted bathroom again.
