It's great you are feeling the "laborer" spirit while experimenting. You are taking away no one's job... You are unique with a special gift to help & educate ppl. Everything you do, there's always a hypothesis to it. Keep up the great work!
Trying. Thanks for making it seem more worthy than it really is. If I'm going to put time into it, I'm going to give my honest feedback and make their training worth it for them. Just my way of giving back the time they gave me.
always do a good stretch before intense rigorous activity. it helps alleviate on the pains after. stretching after the activity is really good too. and if you do feel sore, try to flush out with plenty of veggies, water and rest.
What you're doing is actually very insightful, and I wish more people would be curious enough to try it. Kind of reminds me of that show, "Undercover Boss" - the world of minimum wage and blue collar jobs is completely different that some higher ups know. I recently left a job (after only 3 months) because I saw a pattern of nepotism an favoritism taking place, and I've often had people treat me worse because of my personality (I'm quiet and reserved, but a hard worker). My boss even refused to even give me an ID card even after I talked to him about it and found out that an employee who had been there less time already had hers and was getting overtime. There really isn't much respect given to workers in jobs like these, and it's a real shame because (most) of them work their butts off and are just trying to get by. And then there's always the lazy people who slip through the cracks and somehow don't get fired - or even worse, they get promoted. It's a huge drag on everyone who is actually doing their job.
I really like these videos and your perspective on the job and the workers. Would you consider a series? Try getting a job at Walmart for the holiday season, or a fast food position. I think it might add unique angle to your financial advice.
It would be interesting to watch him work in childcare or recreation. Trying to imagine BtB leading a seniors chair fitness class or some such...it would be so different from his normal experience
Your observations are pretty much in line with what I expected. In a setting such as this, it's best not to outdo your lazy co workers because resentment builds up and they sometimes try to sabotage you. Same with the supervisors. They don't want any subordinates to appear to know more than they do. Basically the entire setting calls for dumbing-down and rarely encourages any growth. You won't be around long enough to experience that though. Oh, and the soreness will go away maybe after 10 or so days. And if you continue to work the same hours, with same effort, it will no longer be a "workout".
Yep. My estranged stepfather, a Black Detroit male, probably never made more than 40k per year, but used his employee discount to buy a new car every two years. Detroiters turn out to be incredibly class conscious, based solely on appearances. It doesn't matter if you're a bank teller or a banker, you're obligated to dress well, even in sportswear. Whites in the parallel tax bracket care more about land ownership, buying a lot of food and having plenty of children. Maybe will feel like we have something to prove as a minority group.
Sometimes due to their credit the have no choice, there are lots of car lots that claim they can get you in a car with "NO, Bad or Little" Credit. Reliable transportation is a must for a lot of jobs so sometimes they just HAVE to get a car even if they can barely afford it
Welcome to the vast lower class world of labor, where many things you observe appear to make little sense and where fellow laborers are often trying to do as little as possible, since for them this type of work is the end of the line. Also, reporting to the boss about anything, you will find, is not desirable. They don't want your reports, suggestions or complaints about anything - not even fellow employees, unless you catch them stealing. Otherwise, they just won't care. Don't try to shine intellectually, just be a robot moving boxes. That is all they literally want from you, to work well with others and be on time. DON'T ROCK THE BOAT or try to make some outstanding process contribution. They will resent you and the other workers will too. And if people see you speeding like a madman, they will think you're crazy, trying to win a promotion or something.
Thank you for sharing. Really interesting! A few things: $5 pizza is cheap. My pizza is about $12-13, without any drink. The big box lazy person may have had some bad experience, either careless, or rule mongering boss. You want to ask them about it. Soreness doesn't really go away until one week. it helps to drink protein drink, a bottle per shift, to help your body rejuvenate. If you haven't done so, wear back brace belt. It helps you lift really heavy boxes without using too much of your back muscles, making you last longer. You can ask for a new position after two weeks. They may not be able to give it to you immediately, but should be able to give you some kind of time frame when it will be. Ask another supervisor/manager if the person you're asking can't give you the timeframe by the next shift/day. Looking forward to your next update. Thanks.
in my country, in my city, there is a small street place that sells 32cm pizza for $1.5... you can also get a 50cm pizza in a fancy restaurant for $7.5
I have worked in sortation center ....sometimes is not about being lazy. I have hurt my muscle chest so bad liffing heavy boxes. I took a week to heal.
If you get a short term job @ Walmart, you could explain why they have a hard time attracting associates, and other insights...you could try it for 4 weeks...
I was so dead sore during the first two weeks working there but I've gotten used to it and I no longer get sore UNLESS I'm scanning the labels onto the packages which is every so often
This strikes me as you wanting to explore different environments and frankly, social interactions. I think this is awesome. Just as some people at the sorting center may be ignorant to the things that you are not, you may be ignorant to things that they are not. I mean zero offence by that. I've had a range of jobs and have friends and family that have had a range of jobs. I've ultimately concluded that although the bad characteristics in people working at these jobs tend to stick out, there's ALWAYS things to learn. For example: How to work with difficult people. How to interact with female employees. How to change your mindset to enjoy what you do. How to be confident and lead. How to build trust and respect. How to avoid the many, many psychological pitfalls that make these type of jobs boring. I say, good for you. I encourage you to keep going, at least for a while longer.
Beat the bush, keep in mind good posture and body mechanics as you course through the shift. Easy to overdo it on those jobs. Interested to find out how you make out with this. I had done this type of work for about 10 yrs total, skilled with many types of forklifts and material handling equipment. Actually enjoyed the rigorous nature of it.
There is one more thing thing that you did not see. How does it feel working this job for long time. You can try to understand feelings of people who needs to work this kind of job day in day out. You call them lazy. Did you think that maybe they are not motivated. They are coming there on their not second, not 22nd not 222nd but on their 2222nd shift. They do not expect anymore to be promoted or anything. They are there not to have social experiment. They are there because they need to buy some bread and milk, to pay some bills. Most of the are there because they need to, not particularly they want to. You want to suggest better work process. Is that better work process better for everybody there. Will that work process increase workload of those workers. Will they need to do more for less amount of time. Will they hate you because of that. About cheap cars, using bicycle is cheaper then using car, just any car. :)
I've worked a low wage job when all I could do was make $7/hr and not more. When I worked there, I also did my best everyday. I remember doing 100 hour weeks back then. If you ask me to make a work process better, I might make a robotic system that will likely eliminate this job so you probably do not want to ask me to do that.
What I want to say is that you should not judge those people so easily. I want say that you should try to look things from their perspective. It is easy for us skilled people to say "just if they can do...". But they can't. Also your willingness to answer every comment amaze me.
I totally agree with you. Its not fair of him to compare his physical abilities to others. Just because someone does not want to do something does not make them lazy. Perhaps the box was awkwardly shaped or had contents that easily shifted. Doing physical warehouse stuff daily takes a certain strategy to it. You can't give it your all every single day and expect to work there long term. That employee that works at a slower but more consistent pace will probably benefit the company more in the long run anyways by reducing turn around. The orientation and training process is a huge cost to the company and makes for a worst work environment by promoting the idea of disposable workers.
That was very insightful and well worded. A quote I never forgot is "there is a poverty that tyrannized the spirit." That's what these people have I think.
Do you have any information on the area managers? I have recently been offered a position as an area manager at an Amazon distribution center and I am having a difficult time finding reliable information on what that job and tails.
Each shift is 4 hrs? I found out that they are hiring around my area. Seasonal sortation as well. Do you work 20hrs a week? Or do you pick your own hours?
A NEW CENTER IN Michigan, my state, just built a center here in Livonia to the tune of 90 million, over 200,00 square feet. They advertised 1000 jobs back in May. That colossal size intimidates me just thinking about it. Whatever the opposite of claustrophobia is, I think I must have that. I always panic just a bit when I walk into a massive space, not high, wide and vast. That's just over 2 hours drive, 141 miles. I don't think it would be profitable driving 281 miles per day, especially for something temporary. This time of year all distribution centers have to double or triple up, then lay off in January.
Beginning to tease out the intricacies of blue collar work. At all of the temp jobs I worked at over the last 3 years, I had the beater-looking car, 2000 Mitsu Mirage, and I sat out in the summer sun and ate watermelon and they, generally, had several years newer models and always ate from the taco-truck/roach coach or fast food. But they would carpool and rent together, so I am sure they made an effort.
I wish you would come work at my Amazon. I feel like I'd get so much insight and motivation. Honestly if you hadn't explained what you did there I would probably assume you were there to be the Human Resource Business Partner, an Operations Manager, or even the Site Leader. I wouldn't be surprised if people thought maybe you were an undercover boss. When I first started working at Amazon my location's(at the time, I've since transferred) site lead was wearing a regular associates vest and gloves. I was confused because he was moving around like just a regular hard working team player(he'd do the scanning and turn around and hand people packages before they could even make it to the belt), but he had this look to him that he had money and was in a higher position within the company. Then the next day I saw him in a leadership vest and I realized he was the guy they introduced on day one as the site leader. Having a presence like that by someone in that position was truly an amazing experience for me. I've since moved to a bigger warehouse and only managed to see the site leader here during the years first all hands meeting. At least I think that's the only time I've seen him. I don't even recall what he looked like so he could also be blending in like everyone else too, but where I work at now is a much bigger one with all the different departments.
Do you get a sense that management would be open to your suggestions on how to better the process? Also, $5 meals are expensive in my view as well; heck I know people who pay that or more for a cup of coffee every day.
Last time I watched a video of yours was when bitcoin was hot and you made a nice profit. Funny, now I'm watching this video bc I'm doing sortation as a means of part time pay while I study for my boards exam. Sounds like the monotony is the real killer.
Hey I took the 3 hours and will start working in 3 days, Some people told me i'll be walking like 20 miles per day, but I don't care, I'm just trying to learn :D . any advice or recommendations , just let me know, they are great for exercise xD.
I'll be wearing a fitness tracker to see what I do. So update on that later. I think in terms of actual recs, I cannot get too specific other than generalizations. I think working hard and doing your best makes the time fly by. Sometimes I work over accidentally since I'm not looking at the time. I need to watch the time since I don't want to work for free, lol.
BeatTheBush that is true!! They don’t allow a few things into the facility, but I’ll try to track the miles I walk too! , Also in the next video tell us what were you wearing, they told me to wear gym clothing and Sport sneakers 👟, since I’ll be walking alot, Good luck and love the videos, Keep it up.
oh ok. Mine was 150k but its a buick LaSabre. Its a nice car not a porsche but a good car. Have you had to do any major work on it since buying it or have u done the work yourself?
Like i said on your other video I work as a delivery driver. We don't get any help from people and when the boxes say heavy or they say team lift we have to do it by ourselves. They dont care if you can carry it they still put then in there. One time I had to take 7 office chairs up to the 3rd floor one by one because they dont provide us with carts. And I've seen those "heavy" boxes with paper rolls. Seriously they actually have kitchen paper rolls
Yep. Some warehouses already have partially automated operations. Every aisle has an "address" and columns are digitally marked. Soon, with only a UPC or some kind of bar code, a robot will be able to scan and find bulk boxes. For smaller more varied boxes, it might take a little while to get their, but not like decades, a few years at most. When I last visited hospital, the food trays were delivered by a robot to patient rooms and this was in a multi-story, double winged hospital.
It's not that they 'refused'. The educational system is broke. I self study. It's better than most people who compain about life all the time ^^ I'm thinking you are missing a point. I didn't work with anyone who was 'too cool for school'. I didn't had drug test. They do drug testing in some tech companies too. Anyways, it's "their fault". but you can't go too hard in terms of how traditional education works. Parents that smoke, then their children at the age of 11smoke, says they don't need to do anything, they get conditioned. You know that every child is different? People that work in those factories are 16years +. What do you think these guys were doing when they were 10? "I'm too cool for the fucking school!" - no. There is just more to this.
This is a really good idea it's like undercover boss but from the workers point of view on the managers. You give management advice on how to better their employees. RUclips Red should pick this up as a series.
Yes! I would totally ask about learning another position. They might say no but hey you are quitting anyway. Also, the people that asked for help with big boxes might not know that it's only heavy when it has the stickers on it. Hard to say.
I think it's awesome that you're doing this social experiment. The part you mentioned about the cars I have noticed that too when I drive in certain parts of town. Also the whole eating out thing.. I will see a family of four or five getting McDonald's and I think to myself that they could have made their dollar stretch if they would have just bought real food and plus it's healthier. So yeah I totally understand what you are saying and coming from..
For the box, maybe they were just pulling a prank on the new guy? I worked at homedepot in receiving before and we often pull stunts like that to have a good laugh.
In regards to the cars thing, I believe it's due to the fact that many people are either working a second or third job there. Or, that we have Leases or financing on the cars at either newly single finances or they just took very good care of the cars in the middle of their Leasing and finance. So car can be a big illusion too well. Unless you can get a Lambo and actually Finance it or even lease it, economy car that are new words does not show a sense of wealth. It shows a sense of need
I didn't see what happened, but I don't think it is fair label the co-workers in your story lazy. You're feeling the physical toll of this type of role after two shifts. Imagine how people feel who do similar work for years. They might have needed your help or been unable to go at your pace.
It's good to check in with everyday people. You can learn about what's on the mind of th average joe and reflect on your own unique situation. Have you made any friends? In th past I took sabitics from my career and traveled to a few countries in Africa to basically help people. In the end, the locals took my kindness as weakness and tried to make their problems my problem thus I returned to Japan, frustrated.
Al Taylor Try to help poor people in America. Some will be grateful and others will take advantage. Those who try to take advantage will be more aggressive and will not be grateful for your help.
Al Taylor Don't help people because of their living condition, because you are condescending to them. Only help people you are familiar with or through organization if you are really "kind".
Hi Zhoubin Yang- I try my best to help from my heart, asking for nothing in return. Here's an example of what, my team and I did. ruclips.net/video/xOHGYIgI2Wc/видео.html
Been in a warehouse way longer then I want to, and agree with everything you say. There are a lot of lazy people that don't really care about their jobs, and I think we get the highest density of them in warehouse positions. It's like you said, you get sore, and when you can see people doing less and getting paid more that work right above you, and the only incentive to work there is the paycheck. They don't want to move up, and in the short term you make just as much as they do, but you can probably move up just with your attitude and work ethic and critical thinking skills to the higher management and make six figures again but that would take time and isn't worth it at Amazon.
What's interesting is that, during non-seasonal periods, the hourly wage is $14/hr and has benefits after 90 days of employment, and yet you do the same work.
I noticed that different warehouse pays different. Depending on what's out there your dealing with. Some warehouse pays even 22 per hour! Usually from the biggers companies like Amazon and such, other might just pay minimum wage. It depends what warehouse it is, and what is it they usually get. Many people have stollen stuff, they they just rised the price to 22, which is a lot for ths kind of job. Like hell, you need a bit of experience to make those money as a programmer, at least in the UK lol 22 is a lot lol a Mid level programmer or around that.
Poor people try to live like the rich, and reach people like to save in order to have more money. If you want to save money, you can learn it from the rich people. Poor people often stay poor because they try to live like the rich but have to use their credit card to buy a fancy car, etc and end up being in depth.
That might be true generally but I hate to assume. I can only say so if I ask someone and find out their position and even then I only have one data sample.
My life in USA False. You can be poor and still have trouble saving money. In order to be crazy rich, under the current system; exploitation of others is inevitable...
If someone is poor they can't really save money because they have to use all of their money to live, not because they're trying to live like the rich lolol
Oh BtB 😃. Watching you discover the world of blue-collar work is just so fun This entire video was a joy...also it reminded me of the days when I worked for a gaming wholesaler. This time of year was always crazy and all the sales staff would have to go on the warehouse floor to fill orders at breakneck speed. You wouldn't believe how much D&D and MtG people used to buy at Christmas. Also, most people in those types of jobs have drunk the consumerist Kool-Aid...low wages do not frugal people make.
I wonder if anyone will ask me to share how to undo the consumerist mindset. I bet no one will, nor do I want to stir up anything and ultimately get ignored, lol. I'll just be.
*You should get one of those Hidden Camera Pens and take some footage to put in your videos. And honestly, your not taking a job from anyone, you're actually helping, even if for just a few days for the adventure of it. You're like an undercover Journalist !!!* *Good video !!*
These people are likely leasing the cars. They likely acquire another lease every 3 years. I know people that do this and then wonder why they can't save any money while constantly paying a car note.
While I grant you that all of those are possible and may account for some of the examples you have seen, you must admit that the probabilities are much higher that If those newer vehicles were on fact owned by the 13/hr employees that they are most likely to be leased.
Jose Deleon it really comes down to preference between buying and leasing. If you are fine with driving an old outdated car for a real long time then buying is great. But if you get bored and would want a newer car often then buying is pretty much the same as leasing or even worse because cars depreciate fast.
Lol i work sorting now and i experience the exact same thing of people having me grab every single oversized box. They are not necessarily heavy unless they have a heavy sticker oversized means they are bulky. Guess thats just what you deal with being a young man.
i really enjoy hearing your perspective because it brings truths back to mind that thru time i have forgotten or thru happening to much i have gotten used too, like coworkers seeing $6 and $7 as cheep, and the lazy coworkers that are always asking for help just to make less work for themselves, lol, 2018 will set me free
It's self feeding since everyone within that group wants to impress all the others since it is so highly prized. One would imagine how great life will be after getting the car and able to show off to all the others to their envy.
There is a show with this exact premise "Undercover Boss"; you can find it online. It is funny watching CEOs with desk jobs trying out manual labor. I would use the opportunity to try a few more work related experiments and pranks. Adjust the warehouse lighting to see how it affects productivity. Come in late to your shift every day and make preposterous excuses every time. Try to unionize the workers and demand boxes cannot be over a certain weight. etc.
Thanks! Hmmm, I cannot guess where bitcoin will go. The way I see it is that any craziness like it is, it can go higher OR it can drop. So since I don't know, I put a tiny bit in and see what happens. Bitcoin is killing gold and silver the past year of course but which is tried and true? Bitcoin is this hot new-ness that could stay for long term or evaporate overnight.
"It takes a special person to sort boxes all day." Now you understand the attitude of your trainers. This is what managers have to deal with every day. Getting people to do the job that they were hired for is tedious. Many employees will work harder to not work. I heard the "Mark" of the middle class IR car payments and house mortgages. People think if they can make the monthly payment, they can afford it. Mark of the poor class is lottery tickets, payday loans, and bad credit d/t repossessions
BeatTheBush : I can't really say. I've only been in the lower-class and middle-class. I'm working to get more financially secure by taking your advice, so I assume the mark of upper-middle class: Car paid in cash or a loan against my savings. At least 15% of my gross invested into an IRA or Roth >$500,000.00 in IRA by age 50yrs, >$1M by retirement. House paid before retirement. These are my goals, if it's not upper-middle class - I'm ok with it.
I have a great experiment idea for you! How about you try to live off $13 an hour and at the same time try to save ONLY using the wage you earned, start with no credentials other then a high school diploma. What do you think?
I think I don't want to waste my time doing that. I have other plans. Thing is, I can probably do this job to job thing for many years but I think it's not productive for me to keep on doing it.
just because they may have nicer cars at 13$ an hour doesn't mean they can actually afford it. Most likely they took out a loan with a high payment. SO really, they can't really afford the vehicle since they took out a loan. They only can afford the payments
This is interesting to see haha. I've been watching your videos for a while and it was surprising when I saw you in an Amazon vest. But awesome. I started a reduced time shift at an Amazon fulfillment center 5 weeks ago and will be switching to part time while I finish my degree. The reduced and part time shifts pay $17/18 per hour here though ( there are many distribution centers in the area competing for workers). Before this I worked at an insurance office.. cubicle life, but it doesn't fit with class schedules. Very different... Expectations of how people can treat each other and say are very different. With about 4,000 employees at my location you see many different types of personalities lol. I work with kiva robots which are interesting from an engineering/logistics perspective. But the work does reduce you to a 'robot'.. having so many seconds for a task you repeat hundreds/thousands of times during a shift. Obviously not natural on the body. Temporarily is okay - but I could never be satisfied long term with this. At my location there are 5,000 robots that store small and medium products. They come to the pickers and stowers - calculating the fastest and most efficient way - which increases productivity and consequently requires more people to work. I'm sure at sometime it will begin to reverse when new technology is introduced. Interesting experience! Nice channel!
Chris D Technology has always been seen as a life saver and create more time for humans. In the end it just causes more problems. Think about it. From vacuum cleaners to washing/dryer machines we attempt to have labor saving time efficient technology. All it does is create more stress. Smartphones, Internet, Hybrid technology, etc. We seem to have this dilemma of thinking these things progresses our society when all it does is create more stress.
Hey... how come you get to make more than me? Lol. Must be because a distribution might pay more. Not sure. I see the kiva bots too but its in another part of the building.
I would really encourage you to stick it out for a while. Your observations show you are coming to understand really well the situation with workers in America, both from the company’s perspective, and from the workers perspective. This understanding , I think, will serve you well in the future but I think getting into the drudgery of the work would really help you. A few weeks at least.
CBXX B Yeah, getting bored after a few shifts shows how little discipline he has for this type of work. The ones who make a living doing this job are living in drudgery but have no other options.
I was not trying to be critical, but he is very intelligent and I think understanding the entire situation would help him. Both what workers live with, and how the company deals with what is available in the labor force.
Stick it out? I'm not sure. We will see. My purpose is not to prove that I have discipline. Rather to learn all that I can and then get out. I deem an effort worth my discipline with great scrutiny. Sometimes, I would not read a comment after the first 5 words if I sense any sort of trolling. Apply yourself where it makes a difference.
MY EXPERIENCE AS A POOR PERSON. It can't only be chalked up to education, but to culture. Even poor people watch TV and are subject to America's values and propaganda. And given the reduced emphasis on learning in the US, I'd argue they're just as susceptible to those messages as people who can buy whatever they want. Remember, half of it is about how we want OTHERS to perceive us. I can own a Versace dress, but I still know I am poor. If a stranger sees me in a Versace dress, they don't know anything. They might believe I'm upper class, if I can carry off the other indicators. For urban Blacks, life can feel like an episode of Sex in the City, I swear, without the clout. We (most of us, anyway) believe the mantra Dress for Success and Fake it to make it.
There is a RUclips video on this topic. A DW production called the gap btw the rich and poor - the divide. WARNING The rich people are not millionaires. They're affluent, hard-working, even struggling, but they have access, by way of good credit, ambition, know-how and yes, probably education. It doesn't clearly lay blame at anyone's doorstep. It just shows you how people think about their own lives. It's about their perception of agency. ruclips.net/video/mGx_Baj9ac/видео.html
Apt215 Melissa Brown I totally agree. I was poor for the first 25 years of my life. And everything when your poor is to impress other people or 'treat' yourself. It sucked. Once I moved away and learned for myself, it was very apparent. I started investing and not care what others think. I drive a 15 year old beater civic. And people I work with act like I'm crazy
This made me think what if people got paid in how much energy they put in, like some kind of next level health tracker wrist watch that measures heart rate, sweat, muscle soreness, metal state instead of getting paid by the hour, id be like "whoa this guy sweated out 3 liters in 8hrs" pay by the energy used, interesting thought
I got laid off from a relatively cushy marketing job. Now I drive rental cars around the San Jose Airport. So it's far from an identical situation, but the thoughts you express here feel similar to my own.
Sometimes, you have to continually do more at a job which takes a toll on the body and spirit. I am not trying to make excuses for the "lazy", just adding perspective.
This must be a smaller location the big distribution centers the shifts are 10 hours and mandatory overtime when you see the green light. To regimented of a job for me. I had a dual career and worked in retail and transportation. A few years ago I took a temp job in Hazleton PA. It was a learning experience I hated but gave me a understanding how Amazon runs things. I lasted about 10 days and just told them I would not be back. Funny thing is every year they I get a voice message asking if I am looking for work. They do run a pretty efficient system despite the high turn over rate.
Reminds me of when I worked at Amazon, mind numbingly boring. I was fixing computers too so i quit in like 3 weeks and picked up more hours at the other place :p most of those people arent in that kinda position though
BeatTheBush well i was fixing computers at another job, they just had me packing boxes at Amazon. It wouldn't have been so bad, but they had me doing 4 10 hour days a week which went to 11 hr days closer to Christmas. Probably took like 4 or 5 shifts to get totally bored. It wasn't as simple as packing boxes though, the holiday madness caused many technical issues inside the factory. I started to just feel like a pawn there Wouldnt have been so bad during the regular season probably. Just chill and do your work and leave
I think it's a sad, dead end job that the monotony and not seeing the sun would kill me. But if that person was lazy every shift, the other people would be sabatouging them, or they'll be fired asap. My car is a 2001 vintage primo Camero that looks new and runs great, but families and poor people may drive for vacations etc, thus wearing out their vehicles way quicker. I think 2 shifts is just not enough data to really draw conclusions about your co workers...the process yes, sounds like you are done. :)
What does other peoples cars and eatting habits have anything to do with undercover amazon worker. . .
That made the video interesting to me though
So Amazon works you harder than you work yourself in your workouts and you quit in 2 days but call people lazy who cant quit.
If they can't lift a box that they can normally lift, that is laziness
It's great you are feeling the "laborer" spirit while experimenting. You are taking away no one's job... You are unique with a special gift to help & educate ppl. Everything you do, there's always a hypothesis to it. Keep up the great work!
Trying. Thanks for making it seem more worthy than it really is. If I'm going to put time into it, I'm going to give my honest feedback and make their training worth it for them. Just my way of giving back the time they gave me.
Your comment about the lazy people reminded me of the joke from Communist Russia: "They pretend to pay us, we pretend to work."
Lol... I figure they will only want the hard workers to continue.
always do a good stretch before intense rigorous activity. it helps alleviate on the pains after. stretching after the activity is really good too. and if you do feel sore, try to flush out with plenty of veggies, water and rest.
Oh yes.. they do that as the start of a shift. But then it actually isn't all that intense after doing it a few times.
The thing is... I somehow wedge myself to be 'lucky'. In fact, I felt lucky today already. So we will see.
I really like these videos and your perspective on the job and the workers. Would you consider a series? Try getting a job at Walmart for the holiday season, or a fast food position. I think it might add unique angle to your financial advice.
AN HE great idea. Kinda like the undercover boss just not as a boss lol.
I think I wont be pursuing getting many more jobs. Only ones where I am very interested in multiple aspects like this.
It would be interesting to watch him work in childcare or recreation. Trying to imagine BtB leading a seniors chair fitness class or some such...it would be so different from his normal experience
What if someone recognizes you from RUclips? Then work will be more awkward.
Not popular enough, lol.
Haha, then he can give them the Audible affiliate pitch in person and maybe sign an autograph! :D
Or pull a Hannah Montana and wear a wig to work 😂
Classic!
Why not apply at a job at Tesla, I think you would be a good fit?
Your observations are pretty much in line with what I expected. In a setting such as this, it's best not to outdo your lazy co workers because resentment builds up and they sometimes try to sabotage you. Same with the supervisors. They don't want any subordinates to appear to know more than they do. Basically the entire setting calls for dumbing-down and rarely encourages any growth. You won't be around long enough to experience that though. Oh, and the soreness will go away maybe after 10 or so days. And if you continue to work the same hours, with same effort, it will no longer be a "workout".
That's a good point. I'll have to look out for that. I have not see this just yet but I wont be surprised.
I have noticed that people who live on a lower income always try keeping up with the Joneses by purchasing cars they might not be able to afford
I guess that's how it is, but I'm not going to stand on a soap box in the parking lot to try to tell everyone, lol.
BeatTheBush :D
Yes, though to be fair, many in upper income levels do the same thing.
Speeding like a madman is my thing. Lol... a personal challenge to myself. =D
Thanks.
We will see but I am not looking to go to a new position.
simpletongeek it's probably a slice or two and a drink
in my country, in my city, there is a small street place that sells 32cm pizza for $1.5... you can also get a 50cm pizza in a fancy restaurant for $7.5
I can't even get a pizza delivered to my house anymore without spending $30 with a tip included.
Do you do some warm up exercises and stretches before your shifts? Can you drink water while working?
Ro Har that's an underrated thing people all forget to do
Yes. Yes. You can use the restroom too.
I have worked in sortation center ....sometimes is not about being lazy. I have hurt my muscle chest so bad liffing heavy boxes. I took a week to heal.
Oh man... you have to get a second hand for those heavy ones.
If you get a short term job @ Walmart, you could explain why they have a hard time attracting associates, and other insights...you could try it for 4 weeks...
That sounds like a lot of time commitment, we will see.
Learning anything I can inside the job and outside is the most important part.
=D Ahhh I kinda want to drive a forthlift. That alone might make we want to stick it out longer, lol.
Vaso Peras-Likodric he said a few people. The rest were fine. There's always some lazy shits at every job that ask you to do everything for them
I've worked a low wage job when all I could do was make $7/hr and not more.
They have a shift schedule they assign you. I work 4 shifts. Each shift can be 4-5 hours.
I think eating at the taco truck or fast food everyday can get very expensive over the long run.
Do you need to lift heavy boxes? Is there a way to say I do not want to carry or lift heavy boxes? Are there any women working there as well?
I think the requirements is up to 40lbs. So no, you need to lift as part of the job. Breakdown is half women half men roughly, I didn't count.
Do you get a sense that management would be open to your suggestions on how to better the process? Also, $5 meals are expensive in my view as well; heck I know people who pay that or more for a cup of coffee every day.
No idea, we'll see.
Last time I watched a video of yours was when bitcoin was hot and you made a nice profit. Funny, now I'm watching this video bc I'm doing sortation as a means of part time pay while I study for my boards exam. Sounds like the monotony is the real killer.
I don't see how anyone gives you a thumbs down on this video! Its cool how you share this experience with followers. I l♡ve your podcasts!
Thanks! Hope this is not a podcast, I guess I'm not doing much in terms of visuals. Its because of this job that takes so much time! LOL.
I say you should sport the most expensive Apple watch to accomplish this.
The desire to learn something new is always good
=D
how much mileage is on your car?
Oh and Happy Thanksgiving!
155k or so.
oh ok. Mine was 150k but its a buick LaSabre. Its a nice car not a porsche but a good car. Have you had to do any major work on it since buying it or have u done the work yourself?
shygirlnow2011 He does the work himself of course lol.
So did you find out why Amazon uses boxes that unnecessarily big? I once bought ONE pen and it came in a shoe box sized box.
Nope, I do not pack the boxes. Only move them.
Props to you for being able to lift those. As long as you don't get hurt, it's a nice work out! My office body cant handle it too long.
The robots will slowly take away more and more of the pain.
Sure. You must like robots.
I love robots. That's part of the reason I became a computer programmer :P
It's better than most people who compain about life all the time ^^
I'm thinking you are missing a point.
Ha ha... then help me get more jobs that I can do.
Yes! I would totally ask about learning another position. They might say no but hey you are quitting anyway. Also, the people that asked for help with big boxes might not know that it's only heavy when it has the stickers on it. Hard to say.
Naw... they touched it for a while before asking.
It shows they didn't even try to pick it up. Lazy.
how much notice will you give before you quit?
I don't think they require 2 weeks like office jobs. You can quit any time as it is at will employment as they can let you go any time as well.
Not sure the source of this but it might be habit or just not knowing you can eat for so cheap.
Some packages contain fragile things, they may want help to make sure it doesn't drop and break
Naw, it's not that. Said person didn't move any boxes the entire time.
It’s not lazy unless they are young or just working extremely slow
from your comment about being able to move around within the company to different departments from experience, it takes months if not years if ever.
Probably... but then not really move around to a different position but rather different mini task if that makes sense.
He has a masters in engineering. He can easily get another role.
For the box, maybe they were just pulling a prank on the new guy? I worked at homedepot in receiving before and we often pull stunts like that to have a good laugh.
Maybe but the guy took off early and strolled out early. He also walked around not doing anything for long stretches throughout the whole shift.
nvm, he just lazy then, haha
In regards to the cars thing, I believe it's due to the fact that many people are either working a second or third job there. Or, that we have Leases or financing on the cars at either newly single finances or they just took very good care of the cars in the middle of their Leasing and finance. So car can be a big illusion too well. Unless you can get a Lambo and actually Finance it or even lease it, economy car that are new words does not show a sense of wealth. It shows a sense of need
Might be leased. You are right, I cannot assume anything based on the car driven.
I didn't see what happened, but I don't think it is fair label the co-workers in your story lazy. You're feeling the physical toll of this type of role after two shifts. Imagine how people feel who do similar work for years. They might have needed your help or been unable to go at your pace.
Yeah you didn't. But said person was loitering and do maybe 1 package every 10 anyone else does. Does that give you an idea?
It's good to check in with everyday people. You can learn about what's on the mind of th average joe and reflect on your own unique situation. Have you made any friends? In th past I took sabitics from my career and traveled to a few countries in Africa to basically help people. In the end, the locals took my kindness as weakness and tried to make their problems my problem thus I returned to Japan, frustrated.
Huh, interesting. If you help too much you'll be the punching bag.
It'll probably take too long for me to move up like you said. Or even switch tasks. I feel I've seen enough.
Next up - BtB works at Apple to get the 411 on new iPhone. Share some of that sweet info while u there!
Of course if I do that I'll get fired right away not will I intentionally do that.
im stoked they started putting the weight of packages now on every package
Great for when you think it's heavy but it's crazy light!
How did you come up with this idea?
I always wanted to do it.
What's interesting is that, during non-seasonal periods, the hourly wage is $14/hr and has benefits after 90 days of employment, and yet you do the same work.
Huh... 90 days? That's a long time to be without insurance actually.
Happy Thanksgiving Mr Beats.
=D
What's next on your list? I remember a while back you said that you were interested in welding so maybe try being a welders helper or something?
What's next? I tend to not give away my future plans until I complete them. This is a special case that I even talk about it before I quit the job.
You should do it for the season. It's going to take a few weeks to get used to it.
I know many people want me to do this or that, or even go work at a Walmart even. But then I'll have to play by ear on this one.
Can so relate to the laziness. when it comes to yearly inventory counts the complaints start rolling in
It can get pretty hard over long term I think but maybe even have a manageable pace is probably best.
Ayyyy! Old car hype 😄 I got a 01 jag and perfectly happy with it
=D Old ones are the best.
Great video as usual! Perhaps you can give us more feedback about the people who work there, like you have been. Very interesting.
I have been not feeling well so I have been limiting interactions so far. Should have more on that later.
Cause a scene and storm out NELK style!
What? What is NELK style?
It's like the red pill and the blue pill in the Matrix...most people don't want the red pill.
They think the food is cheap at 5.00 dollars, they have to realize that they have to work approx. one half hour just to eat lunch.
This is so interesting !!!! I hope they can give you another job in the company. What a great job experience tryout
Another job? Argh... I quit before for a reason, lol.
Ill tell you from friends working there they mistreat the packages
I haven't seen too much of it though.
*You should get one of those Hidden Camera Pens and take some footage to put in your videos. And honestly, your not taking a job from anyone, you're actually helping, even if for just a few days for the adventure of it. You're like an undercover Journalist !!!* *Good video !!*
I'm sure taking video inside will certainly not go so well with them.
These people are likely leasing the cars. They likely acquire another lease every 3 years. I know people that do this and then wonder why they can't save any money while constantly paying a car note.
I hate to assume anything. Maybe they are just experimenting with a job just like me? Or they are doing it while waiting for other things. Who knows.
Glad to give you some perspective through my experimentation. =D
Everyone in my peer group is obsessed with having a new car... I don't even own a used one lollll
It's self feeding since everyone within that group wants to impress all the others since it is so highly prized. One would imagine how great life will be after getting the car and able to show off to all the others to their envy.
That's humility
Practicing to not get too big headed.
Try to unionize the workers and demand boxes cannot be over a certain weight. etc.
Oh yes, I have seen it. I don't really want to cause trouble though.
Hi BTB! Do you think bitcoin is overvalued? How do you feel about gold and silver?? BTW I absolutely love your channel. :)
Nothing to do with undercover at Amazon. Was NOT helpful at all
nice!!! cant wait for your next job undercover adventures!!! so exciting! its like im watching a travel video!! aahaha
Lol... remember, I'm only retelling a story in my living room, lol. But I'm glad the new type of content is fascinating. =D
Would love to see you do an entire series like this, like an Undercover Boss series (I love that show).
I can only do it as time allows but I haven't been looking for more pain.
"It takes a special person to sort boxes all day."
Now you understand the attitude of your trainers.
Yeah... those are pretty good generalizations. Generally true but not always. What is 'mark' of upper middle class and upper class?
Paying cash, owning real estate outright, buying gently used vehicles over new?
BeatTheBush : I can't really say. I've only been in the lower-class and middle-class.
I'm working to get more financially secure by taking your advice, so I assume the mark of upper-middle class:
Car paid in cash or a loan against my savings.
At least 15% of my gross invested into an IRA or Roth
>$500,000.00 in IRA by age 50yrs, >$1M by retirement.
House paid before retirement.
These are my goals, if it's not upper-middle class - I'm ok with it.
Certainly a high positive cash flow and growing your networth all the time is one.
Next video topic: increasing home value by building extra bedrooms to optimize square footage!
And also increases tax though.
It takes a few weeks to get used to a labor job
Yah? Hmmm I guess I wont be around to get used to it.
I have a great experiment idea for you!
How about you try to live off $13 an hour and at the same time try to save ONLY using the wage you earned, start with no credentials other then a high school diploma. What do you think?
XUEN i saved $500 in a few months working part time at $8/hr. No i didn't live with my parents
You didn't tell me jack shiiii..... About the sortation job ..u keep rambling about nonsense wtf?
if i may ask, how old are you? are you in your 30's?
I'll probably talk about that later.
wild guess, i would say 39.
I think that's too high. I go with early 30's at best. Then again, Asians always look younger than they are, by many years. You might be right.
queeniethu 39 is too old. I think he's around 30.
Wrong . Part time gets 10% discount . I believe full time gets 20%
Please don’t strain yourself too much. You can really damage your back long term with lifting. Make sure do proper lifting :)
Oh yes... I do the whole squat thing.
good 4 u
=D
It would be cool if you did a series of taking odd jobs, doing them for a few weeks and then give a review.
Ha ha ha... I'm so tired with just one job, we'll see if I can even get others.
What is with the T Rex and the bone?
TRex eats meat?
Everything you said can be explained by one thing: low education. The job, the cars, the eating out. The laziness. It is unfortunate, but true
I'm going to refrain from assuming since I don't know.
Craig Seybert or genetics
My amazon order possibly touched by beatthebush? 😍😍😍
Depends on where... I touched a lot of boxes going to all over Norther California.
The person with the highest energy gets asked to do more. By everybody. Don't do it.
Short term it's okay, I'm happy to do more.
That's cool.
The T-Rex is loving his steak today. Does it have a name?
I call him T-Rex
I pray to god no one watches your video from your new work lol! :)
Lol... it's okay if someone does. It's okay if I get fired even.
Would you be interested in doing a video where you're chatting with someone else in a similar situation? (We could wear our orange vests!)
I don't know who else would be doing the same thing.
I got laid off from a relatively cushy marketing job. Now I drive rental cars around the San Jose Airport. So it's far from an identical situation, but the thoughts you express here feel similar to my own.
the law makers should try this for a month ,
They really should but which job? Just pick one of any manual labor job I guess.
Seems dull. If you could bring headphones I would listen to audio books from audible.
You cannot.
Sometimes, you have to continually do more at a job which takes a toll on the body and spirit. I am not trying to make excuses for the "lazy", just adding perspective.
It does suck if they try to push you harder and harder.
It might be fun to get a good works out a few days in the year.
This reminds me of the show "undercover Boss" in some way
Very similar except I'm not really their boss.
Reminds me of when I worked at Amazon, mind numbingly boring. I was fixing computers too so i quit in like 3 weeks and picked up more hours at the other place :p most of those people arent in that kinda position though
How many shifts before it got boring? Fixing computers is a bit different than what I'm doing though.
I started to just feel like a pawn there
Wouldnt have been so bad during the regular season probably. Just chill and do your work and leave
Can you try to get on one of those reality TV shows like "The Secret Millionaire" and/or "Extreme Cheepskates"? I see a lot of potential here.
Lol... do I really want to be on a show called extreme cheepskates? Lol. Or even Secret Millionaire.
Lmao. "Extreme Cheapskates" 😂
We will see how it goes going forward.
