The Third Industrial Revolution: Can we prevent the next mass extinction of life on Earth?
This event took place on Thursday, March 8, 2018
at the Robert H. Lee Alumni Centre, UBC Vancouver campus
    In partnership with alumni UBC
This series is made possible with the generous support of the R & J Stern Family Foundation
    About the Talk:
The global economy is in distress. Economists warn of another two decades of declining productivity, slow growth, steep unemployment, and increasing inequality.
Around the world, the economic downturn is fueling growing discontent towards governments, and spawning extreme political movements. And now, after 200 years of industrial activity, scientists report that climate change is ravaging the planet and threatening to cause the sixth mass extinction of life on Earth.
In this enlightening presentation, Rifkin presents a new vision of a Smart Third Industrial Revolution that can take Canada and the world into a sustainable ecological civilization and a more equitable global economy over the next several decades.
Moura Quayle, Director pro tem of the UBC School of Public Policy and Global Affairs, will moderate a question and answer session with the audience.
    About the Speaker:
Jeremy Rifkin is an American economic and social theorist, writer, public speaker, political adviser, and activist. He is an adviser to the leadership of the European Union and the People’s Republic of China, and a principal architect of their long-term economic development plans to usher in a Smart Internet Plus Third Industrial Revolution paradigm. Mr. Rifkin is much lauded for his influence on Europe’s ambitious climate and energy policy, and hailed by German Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel as “the economic and ecological worldwide ambassador of the energy transition”. According to The Huffington Post, “Chinese Premier Li Keqiang has not only read Jeremy Rifkin’s book, The Third Industrial Revolution, and taken it to heart. He and his colleagues have also made it the core of the country’s 13th five-year plan”.
Rifkin has authored 20 best-selling books about the impact of scientific and technological changes on the economy, the workforce, society, and the environment. Mr. Rifkin also lectures in the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School’s Executive Education Program, where he instructs CEOs and other senior leadership in how to transition their business operations into sustainable economies.

Can't believe this doesn't have millions of views. More people need to listen to this man. I just read one of his books that had 40 years of research! What he was talking about 3 years ago is still going on now and every day is getting worse. This year was the hottest year in history of the United States.

Productivity and wold gdp is not in decline nor is it slowing. Because it cannot slow. Its a number. However, the yearly growth of the GDP is declining, but still GDP is growing far above inflation. Anyway, its a great speach and I would love to have a transcript to promote his ideas.

Jeremy RIfkin is a visionary! Thank you, Mr. Rifkin, for your hope, however guarded, which inspires hope in me as a futuristic novel writer.

Finally around 1.10 we find out who this guy is, Stalin would have loved him, been his personal representative to all Russia states. 'Power is lateral' - not verticle, this is a 'Jewish' philosophy about the 'new' world, no more nationalism, do away with those rugged individualist (genital mentality), everybody hold hands and sing Kum-bi-ya! 'Rifkin is a visionary' - WRONG! He is an exploiter of situations, solar/wind are NOT the answer. As a matter of fact those two alternatives are accelerating climate change with their enormous requirement of fossil energy to produce and their short term lifespan not to mention the huge amount of resources to recycle them at end of life.
Clever little boy, just smart enough to BS the general public and some gullible no vision heads of state like Merkel. Rifkin is dangerous to any future humanity may have at this point but 'pied pipers' like him lure the average public in the wrong direction and alwarys 'disappear' before they are held accountable! Note that he did not mention one word about the outrageous overpopulation bomb, not one word! Bottom line is if we had maintained 2 billion or less from the 50's we would not have the predicament of CC today. Rifkin is not 'THE REST OF THE STORY!'

Sometimes Rifkin sounds almost reasonable, but every few years, he reminds me how evil and incredibly full of crap he is; this is such an occasion.

Selling snake oil. Renewables are OK for some niche applications, but economic reality has shown over and over they are not yet ready to win a big place on their own merit.
Anyone using fear of climate change to sell you a program is either trying to help someone rob you, or is planning to do so themselves.
The purpose of fear is to keep you from thinking. Rifkin has a history of this; I see him as trying to use fear of technology to steer public money into the pockets of corrupt business elements.

That isn't logical and the evidence of what he advocates and attempts to advance is the opposite of your claim. Climate change and water cycle changes are facts in full evidence. He doesn't fear technology; he embraces it. Why are you being negative and misrepresenting his message. What is your agenda?

You just don´t know what are you talking about.

Germany - Carbon Neutral by 2050, no coal fired power by 2035. The Germans can do it. The USA is too dumb to be able to do it
