He led the Globe's coverage of the Roman Catholic clergy sexual abuse scandal, for which the newspaper won, and he personally accepted, the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. Mr. Robinson covered the White House for the Globe during the presidencies of Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush. In 1990 and 1991, he was the Globe's Middle East Bureau Chief, and covered the first Persian Gulf War. He ran the newspaper's investigative Spotlight Team for seven years. Mr. Robinson has been a journalism fellow at Stanford University and has received honorary degrees from Northeastern University and Emerson College in Boston. He was portrayed by Michael Keaton in the 2015 film Spotlight, the winner for Best Picture at the 88th Academy Awards.

They incite kings, princes, country, and people to defend such knaves with life and property, with land and people, and faithfully to protect them so that such vices might not be repented of and reformed, but rather strengthened, sanctioned, and approved. Now you are to hazard blood, body, and life just for the sake of saddling your neck and conscience with this.
I could easily mention more examples of such abominations, but it is too shameful; I fear that our German soil would have to tremble before it. But if an impudent popish ass should come along and dispute this, he will find me ready to do him battle, and it will be quite a battle!” (Luther's Works Volume 47, p.38)
For every member of the Catholic clergy who committed sexual assault, how many knew and said nothing or were actively part of the cover up?How can anyone put their trust in such an institution, let alone raise their children in it?
Too many are too willing to be led along instead of thinking for themselves.
People and their family have been Catholic since the church began and they are numb to a lot and also are taught to hate reform and reformers and this is because the Roman Catholic Church is the ONE TRUE CHURCH. The organization impresses that salvation is in Their CHURCH and you will be damned to hell if you leave. It isn’t a belief, it is indoctrination. It is the pattern Hitler used and employed. So you can’t leave but you can buy you mother and father out of purgatory with endulgences. Catholics are taught to pray to Mary and fear to pray to Jesus, which is part of the programmed hold upon Catholics. Catholicism is also about being entertained, they understand theatre and conditioning, but in the laity’s inability to hear what the Bible says and be able to accept such contrary teachings because this church changes the doctrines in the Bible, this hardens the people’s hearts to hear the truth. The people are molified. Their ancestors witnessed Inquisitions, pogroms, witch trials and many wars, book burnings, people being exiled and they sat there and were always told that God would reward their loyalty to the church.
People have been able to stay in the church even when their son or daughter was abused. This is the level of brainwashing of the congregation. The laity does not see a pastor, but a priest is supposed to be so holy he can turn wafers into Jesus Christ. Mind you the priests have no power to turn raped children back into children in their previous condition.
Catholics have not lived in a bubble, they have witnessed many horrific things: the Catholic Church even owned slaves and their Jesuits conspired to kill and did kill Abraham Lincoln.
It matters not how bad anything has been, This is the power of the hold on the congregation. It is mass mind control. It is wicked.
People can decide that they can deprogram themselves but when your whole family is in the church, it is difficult for them to get out unless the husband and wife both deprogram themselves together.
Where I live, catechism is now taught by ladies. No more male priests allowed alone with the kids. On top of it, some parents are present in the classroom for ultimate surveillance. When I took catechism myself, we were alone with the priest, a thing of the past.
I live just outside of Boston and I can tell you there’s only one reason why this story was uncovered, Marty Baron. Without an outside opinion of the story the globe would’ve stumbled around for years and never uncovered it. Marty baron comes in and on his first day he notices there’s a problem that needs to be addressed and assigns the spotlight team to cover it. Everywhere Marty Baron has worked they have won awards for investigative journalism. That’s why they won this award in Boston because of one person.

Well it's excellent work but just like Farrow with the Weinstein story that became the metoo movement which often gets dismissed as "woke" etc. Society has a rape culture they are in denial about.
The release of this story caused my dad to pick up and move us an hour away and pulled us out of church. I was right at the age of communion when this broke and my dad fought my mom on this in dad’s words “I trust nobody with my babies. We can’t afford to take chances. It may be with you, but a 50/50 chance my girls won’t be molested or worse is not good enough for me as a father”.
It shut my mom up and I never went to mass again, unless you count funerals and weddings.
@@jessicabarbosa837 I recently saw Mitchell Garabedian who is the lawyer in the film talk about this subject. He said the church has not changed one bit and that his only advice is do not allow your children to be alone with priests.

I saw the film and was pleased to see this as a follow up story. Another story not covered is the physical abuse by members of religious organizations such as orphanages, laundries and suchlike.
Also, the a used against teen girls but priests and nuns, and the abuses by priests to nuns. It's all sick.

The lawyers arranged for that. It was handled "internally" by the church. The cases that weren't were reported in the papers. We've been hearing about it since the 1980's which is probably why they started paying people off to hide it. The lawyers who handled this quietly are the biggest scum on Earth.
Because clergy all over the world are politically connected. Politics are in the "buthiness" of distributing money. T'is the cornerstone of world economy. All religions are in on it.

I have watched "Spotlight" twice and it became another piece in my puzzle about the laundry "Maggies" in Ireland, the baby bodies in the septic tanks found there, the hidden children of Catholic priests etc. All my friends have watched it. I am proud that UBC, my Canadian university, invited Robby. "You don't need the institution to maintain your faith". Well said. Jesus lives inside of us.

In the early 1900s after Irish independence my mother's sister got pregnant out of wedlock, as they said in those days. But theirs was a prosperous farming family and the family felt free to be skeptical and independent of the clergy. There was never any question of turnin her over to church/state laudries. The family would provide her ewould housing and support and she could raise the child as a full meber of the family. The laudriry victims were almost all fro the poor who overreverenced the clergy. My mother liked to say of this and other situations, In Irelland we dids not go to ther priests, we went arounfd the priests. The story is complicated and dramatic but funally the family agfreed to her marruying the father and she got her dowry despite his being poor and propertyless (dowries were designed to "buy into" a farm or business , making the woman or the man - dowries were for all children - partners in the ownership), This aunt went to New York to join my mother, and married in nEw York. But the politically poerful judge cousin who was glad to sponsor my mother refused to sponsor my mother's sister because she was pregnant out of wedlock. So she and her husband moved to Autralia, bought a farm with her dowry., and they prospered. ironically three of their children became clergy, the only family in my mother's huge extended family that produced a priest or nun. With one exception, an only daughter and heiress to large fortune (her father invested in the London Stock Market). She was sent to a convent school in Paris favored by aristocrats. Oserving the aristoratic life she decided to give all her money away and become a nun working among the poorest of the poor inn Mexico. Another mutual cousin in Paris converted to Judaism. Very few of my parents' grandchildren remain Catholic.
It's a shame no one in Northern Ireland or the UK with a similar profile and skills had any interest in the HIA (historical Institutional abuse inquiry) The UK's biggest ever child abuse inquiry, survivors were tossed aside as soon as the inquiry finished and not one prosecution was sought, nothing more than a PR exercise and the only people who profited were the legal profession, the abusers went of to lead their lives anonymously and unpunished.

This is an excellent presentation, given by a humble investigative journalist, Walter “Rob” Robinson, who truly has a heart. I’m so glad he gained recognition for all the work he and his team put into this very chilling story - and that it was made into a movie in relatively short time - considering how long these abuses continued in the Catholic Church, unchallenged. I am a therapist, and I have clients who have shared their stories of abuse…
When children and teens are molested, it impacts them in a way most of us could never imagine. God bless these people who suffered abuse and these journalists and movie producers who helped expose the pattern.

Instead of watching movies, it would be helpful if the average dumbed down American, Catholic or not, READ books and paid attention. "The Lavender Mafia", "The Rite of Sodomy" and "Goodbye, Good Men" were all published around the time of the 2002 pervert priest scandal in Boston. The John Jay College of Justice proved the cover-up. Prelates like the late Cardinal Law, moved rapists from parish to parish, behaving like as the investigators determined, "mob bosses." What again, ignorant Americans don't know is that good priests, whistleblowers, warned about this and were ignored: late Frs. John O'Connor, Malachi Martin and others would NEVER get the attention of a corrupt media.

Catholic Charities does wonderful work. Run by women (nuns), mostly. My comment was referring to the hierarchy, the institution itself. The leadership is corrupt. Talk to someone who was abused as a child and find out how their lives were stolen from them.

I am really glad I wasn't raised Catholic. The most die-hard atheists I have ever met went to Catholic schools as children. The best way to separate a man from God is to convince them there should be another person between them. It was only unnoticed by those who didn't experience it directly because the victims were made to feel guilty, and too ashamed to let others know. What's so much worse is that the church authorities knew very well, and actively worked to hide and excuse it. But religion is nothing but a scam, so adding hiding sexual abuse by priests and pastors is just one more horrific deceit. Seek the truth and you will find it, but it's not in religion or from those who claim they are emissaries of a God.

i am sure this kind of abuse by clergy is prevalent in other religious orders and in other countries. only in america this powerful newspaper had their RIGHTS to publish , print and let the people know about it . unfortunatley many countries do not have such rights to have this freedom and to find out truth. i have only admiration for those involved in this investigation and upholding the truth .

@@anna-lenameijer9942 we had two teachers in the school where I taught. One had severe dementia the other was Abusive. We could not get rid of them because of tenure. So these teachers were passed to whatever school had a new principal who didn't know better. The one finally died and the other had to leave because her husband sold drugs and had to get out of the state. The second teacher eventually died of alcoholism. It's called pass the trash.
I wish there was someone to do an internal investigation of the Mormon church. Too many bad memories, for me and my daughter.

Found out recently that a priest at my primary school St Mathias in Stoke Newington North London was found guilty of abusing boys. Apparently he pinned a boy against the church door, did what he wanted to him and gave him £1 to stay quiet. He got four years! Still cant get my head round it as he was someone I saw every day and I really liked him. Father Cyril Rowe was his name
I was beaten to a pulp by a certain member of staff which lead me to abscond from the boarding school I was sent to as a teenager. The social workers & staff plus the police kept it quiet. 44 yrs later it still haunts me to this day...Take care
@@marcoxlong2655 I think people still fail to realise how much a child can be affected by experience. I'm sure they think 'oh they'll forget about about it eventually' but I think in a lot of cases it gets worse as you get older as the memory is more vivid. I was very angry for a long time and had nightmares for years and i think reading about what this priest did as he was someone who seemed to kind and caring but was a horrible person prompted me to make a comment. I am so sorry for what happened to you as you must still feel so betrayed but I hope your days get easier I really do 🌹 Thank you for taking the time to share with me, I'm very grateful

After seeing Spotlight and recalling when priests changed at the church I went to as a child and teen. There was the priest who was there when we started attending that gave me creepy vibes and the one who replaced him who gave me the same vibes. It all makes me wonder....had I been right?

Every single Catholic around the world needs to flee that system and seek out the true savior of the world the Lord Jesus through the word of God.
In 1968 Pope Benedict XVI as a Cardinal was in charge of the Office of the Inquisition now/then called the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith. He wrote the official Catholic edict to deal with this problem, by covering it up. He summarised the many ways to impede and derail civil and criminal investigations of pedo priests. The few Priests and Cardinals who tried to persue this problem were hamstrung by this Ratzinger's 1968 edict. And yet 3 yrs after the 600 Spotlight articles he became Pope. When I lived in Cambridge MA I did not go to church. But I walked past this beautiful church, Blessed Sacrament. Years later when I lived in another state, I decided to look up that church online. I learned it was once a thriving psarish, with a huge parochial school and many youth activities. I also learned that its last foiur psstors were renoved fore sex abuse behavior. I also learned that a Hindu architect had bought the church and school sand was turning them into condos, with respect for the spiritual energy in the buildings.

Dear Brother Journalist:
I am a simple Catholic Priest. I am happy & proud of my vocation. I've been living in Angola for 20 years as a Missionary. I have read in a number of publications, especially in your newspaper, the amplified stories of paedophilic Priests, always portrayed in a morbid way with detailed research into past errors in the lives of these Priests.
There was one, in a city in the USA in the 70’s; another in Australia in the 80’s; & so forth, some more recent…. Certainly, all these incidents were condemnable!
…I feel enormous sadness about the immense harm that some men who should have been signs of the Love of God have been swords in the lives of innocent children. There are no words to justify such acts. There is no doubt that the Church must be on the side of the weak & most vulnerable. For that reason, all the measures that can be taken to prevent these acts & protect the dignity of the children should be an absolute priority.
But, isn’t it strange that there is so little news & such lack of interest in the thousands of Priests who are sacrificing their lives daily & dedicating themselves, body & soul, to millions of children, to adolescents & to the most disadvantaged of these in all four corners of the world?
I am sure the following would be of no interest to your newspaper:
That I've had to transport many starving children along roads that were mined during the 2002 war… in Angola, because the government has been unable to do it & NGO’s have not been authorised;
That I've had to bury dozens of children displaced by the war;
That we have saved the lives of thousands in Mexico by running the only health centre within a zone of 90,000sq.km & by distributing food & grain;
That we have been able to procure education & schools for more than 110,000 children in the last 10 years;
It passes without interest that, along with other Priests, we have had to rescue nearly 12,000 people in guerrilla camps, after they were forced to give up their weapons because the UN & government food never arrived;
It’s not an interesting news item that a 75year old Priest, Fr. Roberto, traveled all across the city of Luanda, caring for street children, guiding them to safe houses, so that they could be detoxed from the gasoline they inhaled while earning their living as flame throwers;
Teaching literacy skills to hundreds of prisoners is no longer news;
The other Priests, like Fr. Stephan, organise safe houses, so that the young, maltreated, beaten & even raped can find refuge there;
Nor is it of any interest that Fr. Maiato, 80 years old, visits homes for the poor, one by one, comforting the sick & vulnerable;
Today, it’s not news that out of 40,000 Priests & religious, more that 6,000 have left their countries & their families to serve their brothers in leper colonies, in hospitals, in refugee camps, in orphanages for children accused of sorcery or whose parents have died from AIDS,…. etc.
Or, especially, that most Priests are spending their lives in Parishes & Missions, motivating people to live better and, more importantly, to love better;
It's not news that my friend, Fr. Marcus Aurelius, in order to save children during the war in Angola, transported them from Kalulo to Dondo, & that, when returning to his Mission house, he was machine-gunned on the road; that Br. Francis, with 5 female catechists died in an accident on their way to help in the most remote rural areas of the country;
That dozens of Missionaries in Angola have died from simple malaria because of poor sanitation;
That others have been blown to bits by mines while visiting their faithful; currently, in the cemetery of Kalulo, lie the tombs of the first Priests who arrived in the area …none of them older than 40;
It's not news to follow a “normal” Priest doing his daily work; experiencing his troubles & his joys, spending his whole life with no attention in the community he serves.
The truth is, that we are not trying to make news, only simply, to bring the “Good News”; this News which, with no fanfare, began on ‘Easter Morning’. A tree that falls makes more noise than a thousand which stand & grow (talking about a ‘fallen’ Priest).
A great deal more attention is paid to a Priest who commits an error than to the thousands who give their lives for the myriads of poor & needy. I don’t pretend to apologise for the Church & its Priests.
A Priest is neither a hero nor a neurotic. He’s simply a normal man, who, with his human nature, seeks to follow Jesus & to serve Him by serving others. There is in us misery, poverty & fragility, as there is in every human being; but there is also beauty & grandeur, as there is in every creature.
When you insist on advancing such a painful theme in an obsessive & persecuting manner, while ignoring the bigger picture of their work, you create truly offensive caricatures of Catholic Priests, & these wound me.
I ask only, dear Journalist, that you look for the true, the good & the beautiful. It would greatly elevate your profession.
