Thats a very nice hook up man , I almost thought the ling was hitching a ride but nope you hooked them all good........thats v e Ryan kick ass man good job and good dinner..😎✌🇺🇲
We actually decided that from now on we going to throw back any lings over 15#. We killed two last year, and don't want to hit the population of big breeders.
Nice fish fellas. The 40# fluoro probably broke off at the connection knot. I'm gonna assume you are using an Alberto or an fg. 30# braid to 40# fluoro is the same way I run my spj rig, and everytime I've broken off it has been at the knot, but it's only ever broken from snags. If the fish broke your knot it sounds like your drag was too tight. Good luck this season guys!
It actually broke about a fit up from the bait, right after a retie. I'm thinking it was just a weak spot or nick I missed. But it was under a pretty heavy load whole the fish was running. That's why I backed off so much on the one in the video. Too much. LoL
Most SPJ in CA is for cod, and 95% of the time I'm using 180-200 gram jigs in different shapes depending on depth and current. I've gone as heavy as 250, even 300 once or twice. Many of the traditional japanese spj rods are noodles that don't shut off. The newer generations, I think mostly based in south east asia, have a shut off.
33 years of fishing rockfish and I had no idea there was this thing called slow pitch jigging. I have been jig fishing though for all that time though. Seems like a slow action rod like that has WAY to much flex.
Give one a shot and you will change your mind. They bend a lot to help work the jig, but still shut off. Check out my shark video, it had enough power to lift a 70# shark.
@@socaljiggingwithjohnny8287 good friend to have! He gets you on some small spots that the bigger boats can’t fish. You’re getting some nice quality fish off Anacapa that are even hard to get at Santa Rosa now. I may have to try the Aloha Spirit, you seem to like that boat too
The other fish you brought up with the lingcod at the end is a canary rockfish.
Nice
Ran into this by chance, what a fun video. This was a great group to fish with very savy.
Thanks! I'm lucky to have a couple buddies with boats who like to fish!
Awesome job, Johnny
That's a great spot. Been there a few times myself. They love that slow pitch jig.

Imagine fishing a closer and then posting a video of it lol
Works if you post it just before the next season's opener when everybody is all excited about it! 😁
