The Coral Sea makes a rare run up the coast to just south of Point Conception to find some dinosaur Reds and Chucks, along with a few other surprises! NOTE: The cow cod was safely released. For those that comment that they need to be released in the water, it is pretty much impossible to release a fish 10 feet below the rail. The deckie took off after setting the fish on the deck to grab the de...

What kind of cod is this? Fishing local cod and the Ventura Oil Rigs

Can anyone tell me what kind of fish is on the thumbnail? We caught it on this trip, and I've never seen anything like it before! We threw it back since we didn't know what it was, but it was definitely a pretty fish! Paul and I fish our old 'Secret Spot' and nearly strike out before saving the day at the local oil rigs. Goofish review for the 'blue' rod at the end!

I finally purchased some video editing software and spliced a few videos together, and made some cuts to get rid of some of the boring drop down and wind in sections. The fishing at our 'Secret Spot' has slowed WAY down now that the party boats have found the spot, but we still get a few nice ones! Awesome catches 😊 great job 🤙
looks like you tried a bunch of reels. were you trying to find a new favorite?? if so what is your conclusion??
Nice. Going out there on the black pearl Saturday
Maybe you can add what rods and reels line test you use on the trips
@@kimblakely4559 Good comment! I used review at the start of the videos, but have forgotten to lately. I use Shimano Ocea Conquest 300's and Daiwa Tatula 300/400's loaded with 30# Daiwa jbraid. My favorite rod is the Xesta Slow Emotion 684, which isn't made any more. I also have and use a Synit, Palmarius. I usually use 4 feet of 40# flouro for a leader. Feel free to post any other questions you have, always happy to reply!
How many feet of braid does that bait caster reel hold?
@@Nipomopolo23 the tatula/lexa 400 holds 400 yards of 30# braid. That is my estimate and not measured on a line counter. I have an ocea jigger 4000 for if i ever fish really deep water like over 1000 feet.
Best cap in da biz
pleasure meeting you johnny on my flight, awesome videos! have a great time in Cabo, cant wait to see your videos!
@@unkokaibrah hey, glad to see you online! Cabo was great!
Thanks for sharing. I've always enjoyed your (and your buddy Jim) videos.
chilipepper is one of my favorite fish to eat. super good
Nice catches!!!
Bo thanks for the heads up , out of Santa Barbara, love that area. 😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
Bro thank you for this video hope all is well stay safe
good to see you back. I was wondering of the deeper drops kept you from fishing
Nah, been busy with the family. My 5 year old wants to go bad, but have to wait till he gets bigger for a party boat.
Eat healthy Bro.
The opener is a few days away. Salmon Grouper like meat like sardines. Squid bait you get the good stuff.
I generally try to stay a jig purist and use jigs only, without any bait. I give in sometimes if they are really not chewing the jig.
No it’s not getting them up quicker. They’ll spin off the hook.
I use swivel connectors on every connection, so they won't spin off
@@socaljiggingwithjohnny8287 On the hooks?
I'm going to come out with a video soon, I'll show how I rig my hooks. I don't use assist cord, i use swivels and split rings for my hook to jig connections.
The skipper said the fish are under the boat so why you casting out?
Dude stop breathing like you just ran a mile
You need a bigger reel with more torque.
That's cool your daughter likes going fishing with you.
Your jig should be a torpedo jig as you have to much scoping. You need a heavier torpedo style jig
Hey bro what’s that thing wrapped around you’re rod?
It's a guard I use to protect the blank if i lean it on the rail.
The other fish you brought up with the lingcod at the end is a canary rockfish.
What braid and leader lbs do you use for jigging?
I usually go with 30# braid and 40# fc leader
@@socaljiggingwithjohnny8287 wow, I’m surprised. I thought you were doing 20#
Enjoy your SPJ videos … going in the CS tomorrow…. Any recommendations to increase catching lingcods ? Tnx
If you're using jigs only, then bigger is better. If you just want to catch a ling, use big live baits
Sup Johnny where’s all the new videos. You rock brotha.
Been super busy this year. I have video from one trip that I haven't had a chance to edit yet, I have to get going on that.
@@socaljiggingwithjohnny8287 well it’s always a enjoyable and inspiring video for jiggers to watch you clips hope things fall in your favor to get back on the tight line. PS watching your videos made me want to get into jigging. Just looking for a affordable rod that can take a beating.
@@ELJefeE7 The goofish rods have an acceptable action and are fairly affordable. I think you can find them on Amazon.
This is inspirational
What is that guard called that goes above the reel to protect it from the rail
Hey Johnny, I was wondering the same thing, where can I find the rail protecter you use on your rods? I've searched everywhere and can't seem to find them.
I actually took a line keeper they use on Asian tenkara rods and modified it into that rail protector. I haven't been able to find the same line keeper since. It was on Ali Express.
Daiwa Saltiga 2 speed will do the job nicely, and another good choice is Shimano Ocea Jigger
Don't use bass fishing for deep rock fishing, use conventional reel instead
What gear ratio is you tw400?
It's a tatula 400 from Japan. They have it in 6.3-1
Hey bro 4 friends of mine and I are goin to go on a overnight on the mirage April 5 would-be super rad if you can join us and ty for your videos
That's set up is soo new to him he doesn't know when he has a fish on
i see you used the tranx now your using a lexa. if i had to buy just one reel which one do you reccomend. gear ratio specs would be nice and where do you get your upgraded handles?
I loved the size and feel of the tranx, and bought three of them after fishing one. But then the drags started backing off on their own while fishing, on all three. So when the tatula 400 came out and I tried it, I liked it and replaced the tranx with them. I also prefer the 6.3 gear ratio on the tatula/Lexa. I think the tatula 400 is a great all around reel for 20 through 40 pound line. Fill it with 30-50# braid and top shot it with whatever you need. It is much cheaper buying the tatula from Japan, especially because of the favorable exchange rate right now.
Upgraded handles can be found on eBay, Ali Express, Amazon. Get the ones with a 5x8 mm hole. That fits the tranx and the tatula.
What reel are you fishing here Johnny!? I like it
It's a Daiwa kyoga. Cool looking
That is a male star I
Where can I find a rail protector like you use on your rods? Also thank you for all the great videos !!
Johnny what do you think of the Lexa TW for jigging?
I like it alot so far. Good line capacity, smooth drag. So far I haven't had any of the drag issues I had with the tranx. It can't beat the insane smoothness if the ocea conquest, but the extra 100 yards of 30# braid are really handy.
@@socaljiggingwithjohnny8287 awesome thanks for your input!
I seen coral sea has already put schedule for next season. Are you gona be on coral sea the 1st trip of season?
Haven't planned that far ahead yet! Is it for April 1st ?
@@socaljiggingwithjohnny8287 yea Saturday April 1st
Love your videos. Keep them coming. Question: what is that black or green strap you put on your rod between first guide and the handle?
It's a tenkara line keeper that I use as a blank guard when I lean the rod on the boat rail.
What size jigs are you using out there in Santa Barbara?
Usually 150-200. Sometimes as low as 80 or as high as 250
What is that blue rod?
You mean the one I was fishing bait with? It's an old Loomis swimbait 956.
@@socaljiggingwithjohnny8287 no the one you were jigging with with the daiwa
The slow pitch rod is a xesta slow emotion 684. Small Japanese company that isn't well known.
I'll love to see you do a tackle and rod and reel break down down for jigging. I notice you and another guy you fish with younger guy place the assisted hooks on the split ring. At the top. Want to learn more before I make my first purchase and your in my neck of the woods.
What jigging rod and reels do you recommend for fishing Santa barbara 500ft?
What kind of set up do you use
My favorite is a xesta slow emotion 684 rod matched to an ocea conquest 300hg, 30# braid to a 40# leader.
Ocea is Shimano right?
That was some great weather and fishing day
Hey! Love your videos! I saw you are using tenkara line keeper to protect the rod. Do you have a link or so where to get that one? Do they come with the velcro or you added that yourself?
I bought like 100 of them a few years ago and added the Velcro strips myself. I have looked, but have not seen them since. They were on Ali Express.
@@socaljiggingwithjohnny8287 Oh wow thanks for the info. Do you mind sending a photo or so of them so I can search for a similar one? I saw some but they did not have such a long "plate" on the one side only 2 rings where you would put the line inside
@@nils_weber where you located? Send me your address and I'll send you one.
Nice job. You have a link for that pink jig? Need to add to my box.
Sorry, I actually bought them a few years ago and I haven't seen one that is just like it since then. It was on Ali Express.
Great video, subscribed! After seeing your video i immediately booked a trip for next week. How many hours is one way ride to fishing grounds?
Nice! Is your trip out of Santa Barbara? It's about 3.5 or so to the Rosa Miguel gap. I'm going on the 9th.
