Unfortunately I don't understand Czech (I tried to study it for six months some years ago, and I think it's a wonderful and incredibly difficult language :-)); but I've read the book in Italian so many times that I can follow the dialogues in Czech guessing the meaning - and especially the expressions and the tone of the great actors here. Rudolf Hrušínský was a genius! The perfect Švejk. Concluding, this book is an absolute masterpiece: it's my favorite book and influenced my life. Incidentally, I'm a composer and I wrote a couple of pieces inspired by Hašek: Opodeldok for reciting voice, piano and percussion - and Švejk Studio for piano solo. Greetings to all of you from Italy.

Rossano Pinelli che piacere che fa realizzare, che il capolavoro di Hasek sia famoso fuori delle frontere della Czechia.

I have always thought Hrušínský was overacting the lines many times in the film. I wish he had played the role more civil.

Today I am very happy. About 30 years ago I read the Persian translation of the book which was unfinished. After some years I wanted to read the book again as it was so funny. I never remembered the title. Today I searched with several strings and "Unfinished funny book world war" returned the result I was looking for. Now, I am going to order all his books in English translation. Thanks Google.

the old persian translation that you're probably referring to is called "شوایک سرباز پاکدل" translated by Iraj Pezeshkzad.

Wish I could understand czeck. I read the the english translation. And though I found it hilarious, mostly because of Sveik's antics (I am still not sure if he was an idiot or if he was too smart,) I am left with the feeling that half the story was lost in the translstion, This ought to be the ultimate anti-war movie.

+kamranii that's the point of the book - it's utterly anti-war. but you don't know for sure if he's so stupid or so smart, that's why the situations are funny :)

The english translation is off. It doesn't convey the conversation and nuances.

This is true of any great novel in translation. But I loved the English translation of the novel when I was in my 20s and discussed it with a Czech friend. Better that non Czech speakers have some grasp of this wonderful, anti war novel and its fabulous cast of characters. I liked Jurajda the army cook for some reason.

The translation sadly doesn't reflect the archaic language and germanisms. And those add another level to the whole movie.
