This song was left off his album "Desire". I was blown away when I bought Biograph when it came out and heard this. It's one of my favourite Dylan songs.
TorkGirl8 .I can't believe it was left out. To me it's one of my favorite Dylan songs. Biograph is an amazing collection .Up to Me is another stand out Dylan song.
Yeah, Desire is one of my favorites...and I bought biography in 96 before I heard Desire. This has always been in my top 3. (. Sooner or later, one of us must know). Is hands down my favorite...well, it’s so hard to say...it always brings back the memories and smells and feeling, so I guess I just have a deep connection with it.
I love this song, but I disagree. It's these singular, anomalous songs that make Dylan so great. You can tackle his main body of work and miss so much. I also don't think it's suited to be on Desire. It's more like a mid-way point between Blood on the Tracks and Desire. The same is true of Blind Willie McTell: a song so singular it occupies a unique place in music history.
A friend bought me a bootleg Dylan tape with this on it back in ‘83/84 . It’s just the best song, I’ll play it for ever. I don’t think it belongs on Desire, it stands alone
i couldnt agree more..scarlett and rhe band is on fire...hes never bared himself beyond this record..theres a reason this one was a b side...it was special...

To a mere mortal this would be the greatest song they had ever written. Bob Dylan leaves it off Desire for Joey!!! Genius is a term you can't overuse for this man.
@Gimli son of Glóin I squeak as much as I please, "Gimli son of Gloin", oh ye with the nerdiest name on the net ; even if I got no idea what I meant to say when I posted that mantra, ahahahahaha; I know full well why "Abandoned Love " was left outta Desire; Bob told me; he was about to go into a period in which he would write a lot of misoginist platitudes and misanthropist moralisms; a period in which when he would meet Allen (a friend of ours) , Allen would scratch his head until it bled; and therefore "Abandoned Love" a song of brilliance of paganism, would have been too much of a far cry from the arid moralism of "Oh sister" , from the ferocity of "New Pony"; so the idiot genius left it out for other times; times in which Homer would be again equal with the wrathful-son-killing-nice bloke of the old testament in his books; times in which he would say again, that he was born after the winter of their discontent, in the spring of 'Howl'; ah you poor devil, shut me up if you will, the city of poetry is just up that hill, can you breathe till the top, are your lungs in a knot? Cos you aint saying much, not even for the sake of dissing
Only Dylan could write something with so much imagery. "My patron saint is fighting with a ghost, never around when i needed him the most. Even Shakespeare is impressed when he reads Dylan's lyrics.
Why do I feel like Dylan is singing every song straight to me, mostly with me in mind, I guess because we are the same age, think the same, a romantic, grew up in a different time.
I think it is because Dylan is like Shakespeare. Such incisive and cutting insight into the human condition, it resonates deeply with many of us and then are those who just don't get it.
I was Just Married to Janelle and we got this as a gift... We got divorced we don't talk these days.... I raised my 2 boys Single father times... I went through Hell for my Boys.... In the middle of a Time we never foresaw I am So proud to a Grandpa!!! We are going to make it Folks!!!

Everybody’s wearing a disguise To hide what they’ve got left behind their eyes But me, I can’t cover what I am Wherever the children go I’ll follow them I march in the parade of liberty But as long as I love you I’m not free How long must I suffer such abuse Won’t you let me see you smile one time before I turn you loose? I’ve given up the game, I’ve got to leave The pot of gold is only make-believe The treasure can’t be found by men who search Whose gods are dead and whose queens are in the church We sat in an empty theater and we kissed I asked ya please to cross me off-a your list My head tells me it’s time to make a change But my heart is telling me I love ya but you’re strange One more time at midnight, near the wall Take off your heavy makeup and your shawl Won’t you descend from the throne, from where you sit? Let me feel your love one more time before I abandon it

thank you TorkGirl8, you took the words out of my heart. First time I heard this, I was taken to another dylan/heart place! Def one of my favorites, ever! I never post, this might be first time. Groove on, stay soulful! Love to everybody out there appreciating Zimmerman's genius of feelings with words! Happy Birthday week to you too!

Simply stunning. Takes me back to highschool in the late 90's where grunge was all over yet I absorbed the magic and sheer genius of all Dylan's material. The symbolic, majestic lyrics captivated me since age 13 before Bob won his Time out of Mind Grammy and wasn't mainstream yet. This song posses so much of all the components that meld together and give us the sound we cherrish. Thanks for posting this obsecure and underated tune. It was always one of my ultimate favorites. Anyone that digs abandoned love should check out Carribean wind, an outtake from Shot of love. It can be found on the Biograph boxset or... the internet of course. Whatever did we do before the web? We had to buy pirated bootlegs for $90 per cdr lol. Thank you RUclips!
Dylan no recogió su premio Nobel... creo que debió decir, que el mejor premio Nobel, es ser feliz, y ese si que es difícil de conseguir, porque nadie te lo da...no es un premio es necesidad.💙🖤
Maybe it's not only about her, but his faith as well. Either way it's a sweet, loving, and moving song. I like the music to this version. As with all Dylan lyrics they are meaningful.
thank you . its hard to find full albums like blood on the tracks i guess is what it is called, but when i pull it up there is only2 songs on it and thats it. same thing with desire.
yeah, it's many things. how can we talk about love without faith, or the idea of abandonment with the idea of losing faith? it is very moving, especially in the sense that it's dylan moving away from a relationship, but its as sweet and loving as it can be while saying all those things. I think its proof the character cannot love anymore and his final request is some sort of goodbye
Up to me .. Carribean wind.. and here Abandoned Love, 3 songs that any singer-songwriter would trade their left nut for if they could have written anything similar.
He begins poems with endings, (this one). He ends poems with beginning s( All Along the Watchtower). The Man is brilliant! I haven't bought or listened to a Bob Dylan album since 1991. Under the Red Sky, I think it was called. I guess my brain is still trying to digest the first 20 odd years. I believe, I'll get into all of that when I 'm older and have more time on my hands. Somewhere as close to the Équateur as I can get.
I love this tune the lyrics as always are top draw. I heard it on biograph up there with my best Dylan songs. Although there are like 50 best Dylan songs. I got some ruff acoustic tunes on here put in Ross Heathorn merry go round or Ross Heathorn tides or dig it all
When you think of songs, she's your lover now, Up to me, This classic Abandoned love, Carribbean Wind, Lord Protect my child, Foot of pride, Blind Willie McTell, that's only a few, the guy is irrepassable, if there's such a word🤔👋🤗
Mesmerisingly, hypnotically brilliant. As others have said, here is a song of this caliber which would make any other singer's entire career, yet for Bob Dylan, it's not even worth, in his mind, an official release. And oh god, Scarlett's violin. I could lie down inside of this song forever. All hail Dylan .
First time hearing this incredible song, and OH MY GOD! This is amazing, I'm a huge Dylan fan and I love the rythym and the music and everything! So glad I cake across it The way he sings this is absolute magic, this is definitely one more song I'll be playing on repeat in the months to come
Only Bob would leave some of his greatest songs off albums for reasons known only to him. These outtakes would make most musicians kill to have songs like them. This song is definitely one in the category of "why, Bob"? Well, I'm just glad we finally got to hear it.
This is great. I was present at what I thought was the only recording of this song, in July of 1975 at The Bitter End (then temporarily called The Other End) in Greenwich Village. It was quite astounding - having him show up at the club almost nightly that summer. Thank you so much for posting this. .
Didn't know that one. What a beautiful song. I take it, it's a sort of B side from Desire. Voice, guitar and fiddle timbers really match the sounds from that wonderful Album. Happy to have had the opportunity of seeing the man live in my non-central city of Brasilia. Lots of silly people said silly things about those gigs from few years ago. I feel very sorry for those who can't respect and feel real talent. As I said, immensely glad for being there. Genius guy.
This song was left off his album "Desire". I was blown away when I bought Biograph when it came out and heard this. It's one of my favourite Dylan songs.
After so many decades of following Bob,here comes "Abandoned Love" into my life. Fuck, I love RUclips.

I did a double take when I first heard this line. Dylan can really turn a phrase.
one of his classic lost songs ,It should have been on Desire great melody great lyrics great vocals Bob at His absolute best
who is singing with him? She seems to be the only one I've heard who is suited for him and he for her
I love this song, but I disagree. It's these singular, anomalous songs that make Dylan so great. You can tackle his main body of work and miss so much. I also don't think it's suited to be on Desire. Yeah this one was one of my favorites for a while.
I have to double check with his catalog - am I delusional to like this one so much?
But no, I declare this is one of Bob Dylan's best songs!
Genius. Thanks Bobby. We love you.

I'll not forget the night I saw him play this song in a small NYC nightclub, 1976. Slightly different words. Thought of it for years afterwards.
ruclips.net/video/D_b9jdjmoNE/видео.html (and luckily, someone was rolling tape of that particular night)
I cried out. Perfection is boring. Give me believable. Give me raw emotion. Invoke me. God gave me Bob Dylan.
To a mere mortal this would be the greatest song they had ever written. Bob Dylan leaves it off Desire for Joey!!! Genius is a term you can't overuse for this man.

Such a beautiful song, the heart always refuses to do what the brain wants.I ,like him ,would follow the kids.I love children!
this is such a gem and it deserves to be more than it is.
I can hear the turning of the key
I’ve been deceived by the clown inside of me
I thought that he was righteous but he’s vain
Oh, something’s a-telling me I wear the ball and chain
My patron saint is a-fighting with a ghost
He’s always off somewhere when I need him most
The Spanish moon is rising on the hill
But my heart is a-tellin’ me I love ya still
I come back to the town from the flaming moon
I see you in the streets, I begin to swoon
I love to see you dress before the mirror
Won’t you let me in your room one time ’fore I finally disappear?
Everybody’s wearing a disguise
To hide what they’ve got left behind their eyes
But me, I can’t cover what I am
Wherever the children go I’ll follow them
I march in the parade of liberty
But as long as I love you I’m not free
How long must I suffer such abuse
Won’t you let me see you smile one time before I turn you loose?
I’ve given up the game, I’ve got to leave
The pot of gold is only make-believe
The treasure can’t be found by men who search
Whose gods are dead and whose queens are in the church
We sat in an empty theater and we kissed
I asked ya please to cross me off-a your list
My head tells me it’s time to make a change
But my heart is telling me I love ya but you’re strange
One more time at midnight, near the wall
Take off your heavy makeup and your shawl
Won’t you descend from the throne, from where you sit?
Let me feel your love one more time before I abandon it
They always asked to be unchained then return anyway
It's been way too long since I heard this song!

I agree with previous folk what a gem of a song poignant sad loving and finally a musical farewell to hi love!
As much as I like Sara! This song hits me in deeper place! Beautiful sad haunting erotic and such a testament to love and heartbreak!

Drumming in this period of Dylan is some of the best in rock music!
The drumming in songs like Idiot Wind and Black Diamond Bay is fantastic, the drummer should havr stuck around.

It took a lot of emotional strength to write and sing this. But great artists like Dylan take sorrow and create something so beautiful.
Covered by The Everly Brothers, so I put both versions in my EB playlist. Thanks for the upload!
That cover IS amazing
He is the best folk singer songwritter in the twenty century
Yet another Dylan classic that didn't make an album but other singer-songwriters would kill for.
Yes...Abandoned Love, Golden loom...
Agreed. Bob's throwaways are other musician's signature songs. And I'm not knocking all those other musicians.
well said
Up to me .. Carribean wind.. and here Abandoned Love, 3 songs that any singer-songwriter would trade their left nut for if they could have written anything similar.
What if the singer-songwriter is a woman?
He begins poems with endings, (this one). He ends poems with beginning s( All Along the Watchtower). The Man is brilliant! I haven't bought or listened to a Bob Dylan album since 1991. Under the Red Sky, I think it was called. I guess my brain is still trying to digest the first 20 odd years. I believe, I'll get into all of that when I 'm older and have more time on my hands. Somewhere as close to the Équateur as I can get.
BOB DYLAN , es un GENIO y
I love this tune the lyrics as always are top draw. I heard it on biograph up there with my best Dylan songs. Although there are like 50 best Dylan songs. I got some ruff acoustic tunes on here put in Ross Heathorn merry go round or Ross Heathorn tides or dig it all
Astonishing lyrics
I love this song it is incredible good.
When you think of songs, she's your lover now, Up to me, This classic Abandoned love, Carribbean Wind, Lord Protect my child, Foot of pride, Blind Willie McTell, that's only a few, the guy is irrepassable, if there's such a word🤔👋🤗
Beautiful beautiful.
Dylan is a well of lyrics that has no bottom. This is yet another masterpiece.
I keep listening to this song and i cant get enought love it
Me too 😊 as this song really hits my heart 💔 fantastic lyrics that only Bob Dylan could write 😊
Bob Dylan us my teacher my school of ever
lyrics style and mélodies
Mesmerisingly, hypnotically brilliant. As others have said, here is a song of this caliber which would make any other singer's entire career, yet for Bob Dylan, it's not even worth, in his mind, an official release. And oh god, Scarlett's violin. I could lie down inside of this song forever. All hail Dylan .
First time hearing this incredible song, and OH MY GOD! This is amazing, I'm a huge Dylan fan and I love the rythym and the music and everything! So glad I cake across it
The way he sings this is absolute magic, this is definitely one more song I'll be playing on repeat in the months to come
Glad you came across this gem, it's one of my all time favourite Bob Dylan songs, great music and his singing is perfect :) fantastic
@@paulgreenway8766 I'm glad too, and yeah it is amazing
Only Bob would leave some of his greatest songs off albums for reasons known only to him. These outtakes would make most musicians kill to have songs like them. This song is definitely one in the category of "why, Bob"? Well, I'm just glad we finally got to hear it.
One of Bob's lesser known best numbers! Emmylou Harris is wonderful and should have filled in just a bit more.
very beautiful song.
Un verdadero artista. De lo mejor qe hay. Del uno al diez un doce y lo siguiente
Sin palabras! Las palabras las tiene el! Por eso le dieron el nobel!
Beautiful song ❤️
This is great. I was present at what I thought was the only recording of this song, in July of 1975 at The Bitter End (then temporarily called The Other End) in Greenwich Village. It was quite astounding - having him show up at the club almost nightly that summer. Thank you so much for posting this. .
Kaiser Suze Awesome...would love to talk about that night, it must have been amazing
My heart is telling me... I love you still...!
Genius guy.
Thank you so much for the subtitles in Spanish.
Gracias totales x esta maravilla.
