Fantastic video and great explanation. I'm currently looking for inspiration for a rocky slot car track, and need to make all of the scenery tomorrow so I think that the foam solution might be the right choice :) Thanks for sharing

Hi Boone, thanks for the video, in fact thanks for all your videos, we're all waiting for new stuff. Your pit looks nice, any chance you could share with us your buildings, over pass bridge etc? Cheers
Great videos! I plan to make my track runoffs with foam board to keep everything light. On my model RR for some areas where I need to access underneath at times, I crumpled aluminum foil, painted it gray, dry brushed highlights, and it made for extremely fast, light and convenient rocks outcroppings! On my Model RR videos you can see it towards the coal mine at the back and at the tunnel under the mine!

Have you ever air brushed the scenery components? Seems like it would work. Just amazing amount of detail in your videos. I hope you get to run your cars sometimes 🙂
Thank you again. I have airbrushed the scenery but have found the the brush method works better for me. Plus it’s faster. An airbrush can have issues sometimes with coverage. Where brushing not so much. As far as running my track 😂 , it’s been a while since I have had a good spin around Deception. Quite honestly it’s been over 7 months…. Much too long
New subscriber here and really like the videos keep them coming very helpful/ useful. Was wondering if you could do a full layout review, I apologize if you already posted one , it’s that I can’t find it if you did. The layout looks sweet from what I can see
Thank you Benjamin, I do have a video of the layout, it’s called “ A Little Trip Around Deception Raceways “ and thank you for subscribing to my channel
What about berms? I'm doing my first layout and I'm not sure how to hold the track in place. And what do I do along the outside lane at the top of a berm? Thanks man. All of your videos are fantastic.
Thanks Edward, I have a couple corners that I have done this on the layout. I first created the corner that I wanted and supported the track with wedges to get the banking that I was going after. Once happy with the look and the support that the track needed , I then used poly styrene high density board and shaped the outer corner to create a grove that the track would lock into to hold it into place. Once that was secure I was able to proceed with the remaining berm . If you wanted to have edging on the outside I would use a thin MDF board cut in the shape of the corner to allow the track to rest on with enough room on the outer shape to have enough room for a track edging piece cut to fit so the cars can slide around the corner. I’m sure there are other ways this all can be done as well. A lot of times you can have an idea of how you are going to do it , but once you start the project some of the plans change to adapt to your specific situation. Hope this is of some help and thank you again Boone
Great tutorial, I really like it. I also want to create a model like this, but there's one thing I'm not very clear about, where can I get the magnetic track for racing cars。
Hi Boon , finding your video's very helpful in my attempts to create a slot car layout. Can I ask what are the dimensions of your pit lane building as I would like to build my own from scratch keep you the good work many thanks wayne
@@BoonesSlotCarGarage You're so good at this, I was literally looking at one of your other videos and saw these rocks and things and really wondered how you'd done it. I've bought a load of track and a couple of cars and I'm currently trying to get it all working. Any tips for cleaning the tracks as I think I'm losing connection, I think some of it is the brushes on the cars but there's definitely some issue with the tracks too.
@@trevatkin4869 thanks Trev , there are a few things you can do , but first off I need to know what brand of track you have . It will determine the steps needed. Certain brands of track have a little bit of a difference on how you can improve the conductivity
@@BoonesSlotCarGarage Hi Boone, thanks for this reply, mine is the really old style track, the one that fits together with 4 plastic tabs with circular ends on if you see what I mean, two tabs from each piece to join them together. Does that make sense?
@@trevatkin4869 yes that helps . Sounds like you have Scalextric Classic track. So Scalextric uses a nickel plated rail. Only issue is that being plated and not stainless like Carrara it tend to corrode / rust and also tarnish. This can cause an issue with electrical current moving freely through the track. So first off inspect your track. Look for discoloration of the rails, now since it is plated ( and a very thin layer, electroplated ) try to clean by using the least amount of abrasive as you can . I like using Inox MX3 it has a secret ingredient “ lanolin “ which helps it from evaporating fast and leaves a nice light oil on the surface to protect it from corrosion. You can also use lighter fluid or Naphtha. Apply this with a nice clean rag and buff the rails , it should clean them up pretty good. Sometimes it might take using ultra fine steel wool or ultra fine sand paper to clean the surface, but try to avoid this if possible. Why I say this is if you scratch through the plating it will tarnish and rust much easier. So this takes care of the surface of the track , but it doesn’t address the actual connection between the tracks . Now you need to flip the track over and inspect the rail tabs . Scalextric track was designed for the abuse that kids tend to inflict on slot car tracks . The track is constructed with a softer plastic that could be stepped on when on the floor and the tabs were made to be connected and disconnected many times with ease. The weakness is in the metal tabs , male pins and female sockets. Over time they loose the tight fit. So… look at the female side, over time this area will spread some and loose the tight fit needed. ( I really need to do a little video on this, 😂.. kinda hard to describe what to do but I will give it a go) … if you take a flat head screwdriver you can press down the sides of the socket where it mounts to the track. This will help tighten up the connection. Also… use a small needle nose pliers to lightly tighten up the socket as well. Best way is to connect two pieces of track together to do this . It helps from collapsing the socket it the tracks are joined. But it can be done separated as well. Just take some care and you should be okay. Once this is done clean the tabs , male and female. This should help. Put you track back together and try running a car. Remember that slot car tracks run DC current, so your juice is going one way. So if you run a car and it has a drop in performance at a certain spot , you know that joint is having problems . Just fallow these steps and see if it corrects the issue. If it still doesn’t help after doing this , a jumper cable might be the answer. A jumper will connect the rails together with a small insulated wire and bypass the track contact pins. So here is this part on the track , hope it helps. Now for your question about the braids. The braids can wear over time , and need replacement. Scalextric braids wear out fast and need replacement. They use a light aluminum braid and it just doesn’t last too long. But if your braids look good but seem to be covered in muck 😂… use a toothbrush and comb the braid . Do not go against the direction of the strands, this will destroy the braid . Brush one direction with the braid and this should clean them up. You can use a light oil to help clean them in conjunction with the toothbrush. Works pretty well. Also check the connection to the braid wire. Make sure it hasn’t pulled out or come loose. There are a few braid oils in the market. They do help , but they also make the braids sticky and tend to clog the braids up quickly if the rails of your track are not clean. So give this a go and see what happens. Hope it works out well for you… thanks again and thank you for watching my videos
Boone, have you ever considered the use of an air brush? I have used Loctite foam on multiple projects over the years and I think you would really enjoy trying.
I have a few airbrush guns . Unfortunately or fortunately 😂 I have been working with an airbrush for years , especially when I was painting custom car and bike paint jobs for customers. An airbrush works great for shading and doing the finer details on scenery.I haven’t shown this type of technique before on my videos mainly because not everyone has an airbrush. And the results are pretty good with the simple brush techniques . But you are correct. And I should do a video on airbrush techniques for scenery. Well I have quite a few places now on the layout that need a lot of love 😂. So I will definitely get an airbrush video in the mix. Thanks for popping the question Todd . Maybe it’s time I just do it 😂
So good. So I guess we are done. So we will wait for another video. So here is hoping its a good one. So far so good. So I will catch you later. So I can learn some more tecniques. So long.
I'd really love to see the track in action Boone once you're done with the layout! I'm running Carrera but I know from watching 100's of videos that a majority of the Euro tracks are Carrera based and not too many Scalextrics or Ninco, "the Phantom slot track company"! I'm sure their fan base is mostly a Spanish since it is based in Barcelona, Spain which BTW is a Beautiful city. Anyway, this layout is Awesome and would just like to see ya' do a couple of laps!
I plan on a video showing the track, I was thinking of doing one when it was completely done, but when is a track ever complete...lol , should have a progress video up soon... thank you Django
Thanks for this. I plan on making modular scenery for my track. Sections I can move around when I change the track layout. Although I won't make enough to cover the entire table (can't make scenes for every contingency) the parts I do have will look cool.
You work is absolutely amazing. You stated in one of your videos that you suspend your track from the ceiling. Do you have a video or any information you could pass on to me how you completed that task?
Thank you Bob, I don’t have a video on how I did that but plan on making one in the future. I set up a pulley system that is powered by a UTV electric winch. Works great and has plenty of power to do the job. I’ll see if I can snap a couple of pictures and post them for you. Thank you again
Looks like I can not attach photos to this.... if you have a Facebook account I could get them to you that way. If you search Boone Haury on Facebook I could send them to you.
Hi Wayne , I can probably help you out more if you connect with my Facebook page. That way I can send pictures of how to build some of the items that you have questions about and answer your questions that you might have
I have the same static grass applicator but need to get the larger mesh cap. Do you know where I can buy it premade? I can always order some 5 mesh and strap it on I guess, but would prefer a proper sized cap. Thanks for the videos.
I found some on the net , if you type in the search bar for static grass applicator parts , I found some that came up . I’m not sure if this will work but you could improvise... thank you for the compliment... hope this helps
@@BoonesSlotCarGarage I searched for the larger mesh cap before asking and came up blank. I'll just rig it up with a peanut butter jar lid or something.
Just stumbled on your channel. Fantastic end result and explanation on how to do it. Two thumbs up, thank you. Question: It looks like you have a pully system for raising your track out of the way. Can you share how your system works. I'd like to make a geared motor system because I can see me screwing up and dropping the whole thing to the floor. :-)
Thank you David.... if you look through my videos you will see I have a video covering this. There are two , the second one is much shorter, just showing the pulleys in more detail, if you have any further questions pleading feel free to ask
Ping Pong tables work out really good for that situation. You could even do some scenery on the table and glue it down. Nice thing about Ping Ping tables is that when they fold up the face of the table is facing outwards… something you might take a look at if you go this route
@@BoonesSlotCarGarage Thanks I am looking for the outdoor models with wheels, so for me I think it will work great, what about putting down the foam interlocking foot paths down on top of the table as well, do they need to be quiet? I will use this outside, not much rain where I live.
@@mattiapresti7295 the spray foam can be used like that and so can the polystyrene foam. The polystyrene is going to give you more support. The spray foam is a little messy to use in that matter because of the chemical properties that it has . There is a glue type of residue that can be quite a pain. And the control factor is an issue as well, it just like to grow bigger than expected most times 😂
Evening Boone, second and third time I am watching the video :-) it simply is great. One question I would have regarding the loctite foam: What happens when you are finished building and still have a lot of foam inside the can? Is there a way to seal the can and continue doing some work later? BR
Thank you Harald..... the can itself should seal so that the foam inside is still good. Trick comes down to making sure your nozzle is all cleaned out and the application straw. But I see no reason why you could not put the can on the shelf and reuse later when needed
@@BoonesSlotCarGarage All right - so you simply replace the nozzle after use. OK, that makes sense. By the way - how many cans have you already used for your mountains?
@@haraldhorn1131 I think I have used around 12 cans of foam so far, but that includes everything that I have done up to this point. The rock formations, hills and the inside of the tunnel areas that I have as well. It goes a long ways with just a single can...
By far the best scenery video I've seen so far.

Dude, this is awesome. I like your explanation for how to spray the foam. It makes sense. I was about to spend a lot of money on styrofoam but now I don’t have to. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you, glad I was able to help
Fantastic video and great explanation. I'm currently looking for inspiration for a rocky slot car track, and need to make all of the scenery tomorrow so I think that the foam solution might be the right choice :) Thanks for sharing
@@HobbyWorld_one thanks 😊, foam is wonderful super scenery goop 😂

Boone, this is a fantastic channel, thank you. You really do have a great delivery style, just from this one video I've already learned some new things which will enhance my future builds. Without a doubt this is one of the best tutorial videos I've had the pleasure of watching. 10/10 and then some :)
Very kind words, thank you very much.

Thank you Patrice , and welcome to the world of slots
Hi Boone, thanks for the video, in fact thanks for all your videos, we're all waiting for new stuff. Your pit looks nice, any chance you could share with us your buildings, over pass bridge etc? Cheers
Thank you.. I plan on doing a video of my layout soon , and to show the different structures and items. Thank you again and glad you enjoy them.
Amazing job, compliments
Thank you Sir
Great videos! I plan to make my track runoffs with foam board to keep everything light. On my model RR for some areas where I need to access underneath at times, I crumpled aluminum foil, painted it gray, dry brushed highlights, and it made for extremely fast, light and convenient rocks outcroppings! On my Model RR videos you can see it towards the coal mine at the back and at the tunnel under the mine!
Thank you 😊, I like your aluminum rock idea, very ingenious

Love the video. Do you have showing how you suspend the whole track with those pulleys .
Thank you.... and yes , I have 2 videos that cover the pulley system for the track
Excellent!!

Thank you Dong , the tracks are available at Hobby Stores and online. Search for “slot car track set” and you should find an abundance of options
Thank you for your feedback. This is very important for me as a beginner。

So long.
Thank you Sabian , glad that you are enjoying the videos, hope to film a new one today and have up soon

I'd really love to see the track in action Boone once you're done with the layout!
I'm running Carrera but I know from watching 100's of videos that a majority of
the Euro tracks are Carrera based and not too many Scalextrics or Ninco, "the
Phantom slot track company"! I'm sure their fan base is mostly a Spanish since
it is based in Barcelona, Spain which BTW is a Beautiful city. Anyway, this layout
is Awesome and would just like to see ya' do a couple of laps!
I plan on a video showing the track, I was thinking of doing one when it was completely done, but when is a track ever complete...lol , should have a progress video up soon... thank you Django
Mr boones, thank you for answering my questions... One last ... Foam does not adhere to masking tape ?? It is easy to remove ???
No worries 😉… spray foam sticks to everything 😂. But it is somewhat easier to remove from tape

Thanks for this. I plan on making modular scenery for my track. Sections I can move around when I change the track layout. Although I won't make enough to cover the entire table (can't make scenes for every contingency) the parts I do have will look cool.
Thank you Johnnie
You work is absolutely amazing. You stated in one of your videos that you suspend your track from the ceiling. Do you have a video or any information you could pass on to me how you completed that task?
Thank you Bob, I don’t have a video on how I did that but plan on making one in the future. I set up a pulley system that is powered by a UTV electric winch. Works great and has plenty of power to do the job. I’ll see if I can snap a couple of pictures and post them for you. Thank you again

@@BoonesSlotCarGarage thanks, I'll go searching for them.
Hey, I noticed a pully near where you did the cobblestone. Do you raise and lower your set when you want to use it?
What do you think of using a portable Ping Pong table for a slot car track? I need something that I can easily move, no room for a permanent set up.
@@Moondoggy1941 yes that would work. Could make the scenery removable panels
@@BoonesSlotCarGarage Yes that is a good idea, I could make them out of ply wood and then attach them to the Ping Bong table with clamps.
@@Moondoggy1941 that sounds like a good solution
Is that foam suitable to build supports for the track (banking turns, bridges) ?
@@BoonesSlotCarGarage wow - 12 cans. I will go ahead and start building some rocks for the first bridge as well. Thanks for your help
