"Sometimes music is the only way I can escape the incessant sadness and tragedy of the world" so thank you for being in it, and sharing your beautiful music with us.
Thank you for enjoying it! Sometimes I worry about how little I can do to change the world for the better, when all I know is how to make music. I once said this to Jack Conte, and he replied: "the world needs art. So keep making it."
***** That is something I've felt my entire life, a wish to make this world a better place for everyone. But I learned along the way that the best way we can make this world a better place is being happy and making others happy simply by being ourselves and doing what we're passionate about. Keep doing what you love, and keep being true to yourself, and somehow bit by bit, the world will be a better place to live in.
I keep coming back to this performance....for years now. It is such a very beautiful improvisation of a great classic. Truly brilliant. Nathan, please give us More ! Where did you go ?
Nathan, never stop what you are doing. Music gives a voice to the voiceless, its a way to express our emotions, say things we can't find the words to say. Without music, this world would be a dreadful place to live in.
Thank you for this. I strongly believe that art can have a positive and tangible impact on the world. It may seem like a small gesture but it is the only way I know to give back.
This brought tears to my eyes. Amazing Grace is an old favorite, and brings back so many memories! Thank you Nathan! Your work continues to astound me!
I know what it feels like to pour your heart into a song through the piano and I felt like that was exactly what you were doing. It was beautiful, definitely one of my favourites. It's beautiful, with all honesty in my heart
Thank-you ***** for doing this song! It's my favorite song cause my mom use to sing it to me every night before bed, and it has a great message. One time I was at a nursing home singing this song with some friends and the old lady that we were singing to said to me "The way you sang it made it seem like it means something special to you." Again Thank-you and great job!
I'm french and I'm grateful for your concern. Thank you Nathan for sharing your music, it means a lot. But please don't be so sad, you almost broke my heart because I had the feeling that what you showed was true. Don't forget the wonders that life and humanity are capable of, and when those wonders come, we should never forget to celebrate them too :) Keep up making magic with your fingers :) (And I'm sorry for the clumsy english ! ^^)
Okay... Wow... Just Wow... Please excuse me while I go watch all of your videos on replay forever :) you are soooo soo talented Nathan!! I have been playing piano for almost ten years so I know the kind of dedication it takes and hours of practice! But this, this is so flawless and effortless it's like the music is just flowing straight from your soul! You have inspired me to keep on doing what I love, and I hope you never stop because a talent like yours is too rare!!
Nathan, just thought I'd drop a line, It's the first time I have had a chance to listen to you and wanted to say how impressed at your ability to improvise the song. Absolutely beautiful, as a fellow musician ( though not at your level) I well understand the concentration required to improvise, so hats off to you mate, and good luck in your future postings, I'll be following from here on out. Cheers
Nathan Myers Hey other Nathan! Thanks for writing, one of my favorite ways to procrastinate is reading comments and seeing what people think about my work. I especially love hearing from other musicians, because people like you have an especially discerning ear. So I know that a compliment from someone like you carries special weight! Oh, and I apologize for the late reply, I just returned from traveling overseas with limited internet access.
Hannah Danielle Hosch I'm glad you enjoyed it! I played in a church band for about 9 years, so I always played the "standard" hymns a little differently every time to keep things fresh :)
I have heard skilled pianists play single note melodies more beautifully than anything I have ever heard before or since. It is not which notes you play, but how you play them that makes all the difference.
so true. But I think you are incredibly talented. You can make the piano tell a whole story. I love listening to you play I am going to keep practicing till I can play like you.
I love this just that little more every-time I listen to this! My favourite piece to date. When I come to the US next year, remind me to look you up and hear this live!
Hello +Nathan Alef! Today I was able to recognize his improvisations. Congratulations on your talent! You feel the music in an incredible way. May God bless your life and your melodies too. May your notes reach the heart of God day after day!
Haha any time! And oh no it definitely worked for sure! My favourite thing about your playing is that you never overdo anything, like your embellishments are always perfect and complimentary to the piece :)
Beautiful, I can't believe you improvised this! :) So much talent in one person, is this still fair? :D I'm gonna listen to it all day, I can promise you that ;D
***** I continue to really enjoy your music! Your sense of the music, beyond just the technical aspect is quite keen and you push a lot of emotion through your playing and its very enjoyable! Take care man - looking forward to more.
Jordan Raikes Thanks, Jordan! I'm constantly impressed with how carefully some of you listen to my work, it keeps me motivated to do the best I know how.
***** It is said that Music is an extension of the soul itself, and when you play a little part of your soul ekes out and it it self evident by your expressions and beautiful craftsmanship that this was a true labor of love! I say this many times, but for me personally, pure raw and emotional music like this is what I call a feast for the eyes, ears and soul! Bravissimo Nathan. In a world with so much sorrow and daily strife, this simple act of humility is what I find most joyful and beautiful in this world most of all! 😊
Catherine Marie Stick it out, it will start making sense soon. I promise. Plus, understanding theory is immensely helpful in helping you figure out patterns in music and hearing what you like and dislike, as well as allow you to imitate concepts from classical music to rock and pop. You can do it!
Yes... I listened & watched. it seemed to me that you were really burdened & distressed in this song, but still played your heart out as a form of worship/prayer. This isnt the place to preach, but i sure pray you found peace & the lifting of your spirit in it. somehow 'thanks' seems small in the face of sacrifice. Blessings! BobM
SoundCloud says, "if a track is downloadable, there will be a "download" box under the artist's picture." I don't see that for this performance on SoundCloud. Did you delete it, so it's no longer available for free, or ... because I'm totally new to SoundCloud and only went there based on your suggestion to get the freebie, maybe i'm missing something? Thanks.
pianoplayer34 I'm glad you like it! Unfortunately, clearing rights for sheet music is near impossible unless you're Hal Leonard. I wish I could provide sheet music, but I can't without exposing myself to legal trouble.
Hi, i decided to check some of your videos since i saw you are the guy who mixed the last Don Toliver song ?? If it's really you, you are a beast. Feel free to reply to me, would be incredible if i can ask you some questions, even one.
btw, i'm totally willing to pay for the Amazing Grace performance, but i don't find it available for purchase on Patreon, Loudr, SoundCloud, etc. Thanks again.
Is there still a free download of this? I mean, it's TOTALLY worth spending money on... but I also can't find a way to do that. Maybe I'm soundcloud-illiterate.
Nathan, if you can stand a few comments from an old fogey, remember videos are a visual as well as sound media. Amazing Grace is one of the most soothing, comforting hymns so next time try not to look like you are in so much pain while playing. If I close my eyes this is very moving if I open them I ask myself "does Nathan have stomach cramps today, maybe chest pain?" Your on camera persona wasn't comforting this time. How about Joyful, Joyful Lord We Adore Thee for your next hymn improvisation?
The music comes first, and if I have to focus on playing the right notes with the right emotional intensity, my facial expressions are my last priority. The part of our brain that controls muscle movements to our hands and face are neighbors in the primary motor cortex, and there happens to be a lot of crosstalk between those impulses. I can stifle it, and often do, but usually at the expense of quality. Improvising a live take is not an easy task, and all my focus must be given to the music. If my face continues to offend you, please feel free to close your eyes while you listen.
UMM YES.
I agree with this guy.
This song is awesome, and these identical twins are are kinda cute.
***** What is going on here? TOO MANY PETERS
Such a pretty song.
***** There's never too many Peters. ;)

Very powerful and moving. This is my mother's favorite song. Thank you for reminding me why I cry every time I hear it.
Grimmwolf25 Happy tears I hope :)
Yes. Every time.
Music does not cure the world's ills. Unless you're Nathan, then it's a superpower. Thank you for posting this, Nathan.
Thank you for this. I strongly believe that art can have a positive and tangible impact on the world. It may seem like a small gesture but it is the only way I know to give back.
Gorgeous and brilliant arrangement!

Thanks, Maggie! I hope it was what you needed, and I'm glad you like it. :)
i hope to one day be able to play half as beautifully as you. You put your heart and soul into it and I hear it in every note.

+Cookie Hoffman Thank you! I'm glad you like it :)
Thanks for making me cry!!! Beautifully done Nathan!!
Tina Gallaher I never know how to feel about making people cry... it seems so wrong... but I'm glad you like it!
It's ok to make them cry if it's the right reasons like playing something so beautiful it moves them to tears
Can you post more please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Very interesting chord progressions! Great job Nathan.
I hope that means you like it and not a passive-aggressive remark about it being too jazzy :)
***** Heavens no Nathan! I loved it:I love jazzy! Have listened to it four times.
rttipton Great!
Mygoddd youre so good 😭😍😍 i like the way you play it nathan 😁
For your Q&A: how do you improvise so well? How do you get from a chord progression to perfect accidentals, embellishments, and bass notes?
Ohmygod this was stunningly gorgeous
Nicki Richards Thanks, Nicki! I was a little worried about going too far with the jazzy harmonies for such a sacred piece, but I'm glad you like it!
Haha any time! And oh no it definitely worked for sure! My favourite thing about your playing is that you never overdo anything, like your embellishments are always perfect and complimentary to the piece :)
Nicki Richards It's a fine line, for sure. I try to stay on the tasteful side of things, and I'm glad you think it's working out!
Awesome!
Really good arrange ;)
This song is Relax for me
Beautiful!
Marco Granados Thanks, Marco!
So touching...beautiful rendition. You're so talented! Thank you for this (haha).

Happy (belated) birthday!
This is great! I love the jazzy feel to it, Im learning piano now its so much easier than guitar but the theory is tuff.
Catherine Marie Stick it out, it will start making sense soon. I promise. Plus, understanding theory is immensely helpful in helping you figure out patterns in music and hearing what you like and dislike, as well as allow you to imitate concepts from classical music to rock and pop. You can do it!

Beautiful :-)
Hi Nathan, thank you for this beautiful arrangement. Is there anywhere that the score is available? I would love to learn how to play this
This is so great! I love it. In what major do you play?
Blessings! BobM
Wow dude uve changed a lot (in a good way) ... Hope to see you perfoming live ...
