Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes are a Jersey Shore musical group led by Southside Johnny. They have been recording albums since 1976 and are closely associated with Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band. Southside Johnny has long been considered the Grandfather of "the New Jersey Sound." Jon Bon Jovi has acknowledged Southside as his "reason for singing."
one of the best hooks ever, love this song
It feels good listening to 80's music lot's wonderful memories.
We filmed this very early MTV video in NYC at The Hard Rock Cafe. I'm sitting at the table in the Horn section. (Left to right-Frank Elmo Tenor Sax-Mark Pender Trumpet-Me-Bob Ferrel Trombone.) That's our Bassist George Ruiz behind us at the table. The Hard Rock gave the entire band cool HRC jackets. I saw The Bengals and Michael J. Fox in the club that night too. Ah the 80's ;-)
Very cool story, I would have loved to have been there. This song should have been bigger, and the band should have kept playing all these years later but they took it from the setlist right after 84-85 tours. I had a band back in the day and we would play this at any gig we got and everyone seemed to like it a lot. I miss the 80s and wish I could go back so bad...Stay safe...
Rusty was there too
@@divacdiva01 and Kevin, and Billy Rush too!
How'd they get Willem Dafoe??
@@craigd2599 (Late reply) Willem Dafoe only had a few film credits when this video was shot ("Streets of Fire" was released the same year, 1984). I first took notice of Dafoe when I saw Platoon in a theatre around 1987.
Eagle eyed New Yorkers might recognise the 'new romeo' character in the video is legendary street singer Super Bad Brad, the disco king of the sidewalks and streets from Showtime at the Apollo fame.
Should have been a bigger hit!
Couldn't agree with you more! Great tune.
Agree!
I remember that the song did get a lot of airplay on WAPP 103.5 FM in NYC when it came out. You're right. It should have been a bigger hit.
She came walkin' in clutchin her silver collection
With her entourage in tow
With that immaculately fashionable-cat
Who must be her new Romeo
I said "Hello how are ya haven't seen you in so long
Tell me now baby how long has it been?
How long has it been?"
And who's the new Romeo?
Who's the new Romeo?
Man I had enough
I don't now what she sees in him
With his pointed shoes and his poised expression
I admit he throws a mean shape or two
But then again, my confidence is easily shaken
It never has taken much
And a new Romeo
And a new Romeo
So who's the new Romeo?
Who's the new Romeo?
And then she looked at me
With her bitter green eyes sayin'
Tin angel is what I've become
It's not for you to criticize
Just look at me now
Look at me now
So I said, "Excuse me"
And I got up and I crossed my fingers for luck
I started stumblin' staggerin' baby searching for the shadows
Back behind me she was tellin' 'em, sellin' 'em
New and used faces 'round the dimly lit circle
Of the Thunderstruck
Of the Thunderstruck
Now who's the new Romeo?
Who's the new Romeo?
Who's the new Romeo?
Who's that new Romeo?
Who's the new Romeo?
Who's the new Romeo?
I still remember the day this song came on the radio. I think it was on WNEW/NYC.
Good song. I don't think he liked it because he never plays it live or atleast I can't find him singing it Live and I can find pretty much every song he ever sang live on here.
@@PaulRobert474I saw him about 10 years ago at a tiki bar on the Jersey shore. I yelled out for him to play this, but he either didn't hear me or ignored my request. It was a fun show.
@@lightblueeyedgirl1442 Ya know what my brother? I'm on it. I'm up Asbury area a good bit. He still plays at the poney and wonder bar I think\. I need to know...
Is that Willem Dafoe with Vincent Spano?
Yepper it is! also Cornelia Guest who Andy Warhol dubbed "Deb of the decade and Clarence Clemons is in one of the crowd shots. Its a great video.

Women’s hairdos back in the 80’s were so bad! The Aerosol Annie look.
I love this guy🎸🏆⭐👑💞
That's why we almost completely lost the ozone layer!
The *volume sucks* for such a RocKiN' Tuneage.
New Romeo!!!!!!

It’s hard to beat Alex Call’s original version
This would have been a good song for Huey Lewis! Sounds just like something he’d sing!
Actually, I imagine this tune sung by a certain Bruce S.
This would be a good Eddie Money song.
Huey Lewis stole his whole style and sound from the Jukes.
Written by Alex Call who was in the band Clover with Huey Lewis. He co wrote some songs with Huey-Perfect World, Power of Love
@@ranielalmaria6612 I agree with that too! There is also an Eddie Money feel to this, may he rest in peace.
