Isn't it crazy that "a woman's place is in the kitchen" when she's at home and doesn't get any pay, but as soon as its a position that makes money and can have power in a restaurant setting it's dominated by male chefs and women have to prove themselves. If that isn't a perfect example of the patriarchy then I don't know what is.
Ray Ray I understand your point but male chefs have to prove themselves as well.. I mean no one just comes in a kitchen and becomes a chef unless they have a lot of experience
It's not an example of a patriarchy as you are saying. It has nothing to do with the money or the power. It's all about the personality type usually required to be a great chef (and here I mean like a Michelin starred chef). Men are more likely to possess the traits usually required to work and command that type of a kitchen. That does not mean however that there aren't women who can do it, it only means that statistically there are more men than women. However, I do have to say that those who think that "a woman's place is in the kitchen" are complete retards, that is a home task that should be done together by the couple.
The difference between cooking at home and cooking in the kitchen is the pressure. It takes a lot of mental strength to work as a professional, the kind of mental strength that comes with years of emotional repression that men are exposed to more often than women. Watch Hell's Kitchen and look at the difference between the men and women's team at the beginning. In the end when the deadweight are gone, you still get left with high quality talent from both genders, then it's no longer a matter of gender but individual talent. If you're good enough, you'lll make it. But if you take the average, men are better equipped mentally for it in a professional setting.
If I remember correctly (haven't seen it in years and have seen it more in Italian than in English) every character besides Linguini and the rodents have accents other than American (whether French or otherwise)

I went to cooking school after watching ratatouille - it was much more pressure then what that video showed it was gonna be. I felt betrayed, then I remembered ratatouille is a movie, that is not only animated, but the main chef and character is a RAT... don’t ask me what about that sounded legit and reasonable to me... I might’ve just had a bad day..! It happens ☀️
If you're curious on how a real kitchen in a Michelin level restaurant run check out Boiling Point by Gordan Ramsey. It a little dramatic cause of the cameras but it's the closes inside look of the pressure inside a kitchen
I went to cooking school (not because of Ratatouille... ok maybe a little) for a short semester just to see what it was like in real life. I enjoyed it, but it was also an eye opener: I noticed I wouldn't be able to handle the stress of a restaurant kitchen. Enjoying cooking for yourself and family and friends and the occasional potluck is not the same as having a career in cooking.
It also helps that the RAT was basically Thomas Keller. (Pixar’s team spent time in The French Laundry’s kitchens and he even created the way the signature dish was put together.)
I so enjoy these videos where someone inside the profession evaluates cinematic representations of that profession. Love the insight and clarity offered!
It’s funny how movies make things look way different than in real life and that since people have no experience with the subject on the movie screen, they end up thinking that the movies are realistic.
You know I never thought I'd ever hear the sentence "You have to prove yourself as a woman in the kitchen". 100 years ago most men had never boiled water
Women are always expected to cook (and do any other kind of domestic labour) 'cause that's "where they belong" but as soon as there's compensation involved and it's an actual career they're overlooked.
Yeah, I can confirm it’s like that in culinary school. In my pastry program, out of 70 people only 5-6 are men. But in our culinary program, it’s the opposite. I have a female friend who’s in the culinary program, same school. She told me that she had to work twice as hard as her male counterparts and show that she’s a boss. Generally speaking, you’ll find more females doing pastry than males. But that’s slowly changing :)
Catering assistant here (Glorified dishwasher) totally agree about keeping a clean station. Your kitchen assistants also really appreciate a steady flow of dishes rather than everything at the end of service. It just makes everyone's life easier.
Lol I was in culinary school and I remember once when I got stuck at the dish washing machine. No one else was cleaning so I spent the entirety of the class doing it. I actually felt bad that I missed the whole lesson because the amount of crap that needed to be cleaned. To this day I still don't know how to make forcemeats, but the thing I do remember is my chef smiling at me and being thanked for busting my butt.
From a chef that worked in those high elaborate fine dining restaurants (The French Laundry, Eleven Madison Park, Victoria and Alberts) if you are a young person aspiring to learn those degustative, tasting menu top 50 restaurants in the world, the movie Burnt with Bradley cooper is really accurate. I’ve cooked for him at one of my chefs tables and he truly said he felt as if he was back on the set of the movie, he also helped my Cold app cooks for almost an hour during plating for the first seating of the evening, truly a great guy and he cook plate pretty damn well!
@@bobbythecajun7869 I am assuming thet was Anthony Bourdain that had eggs thrown at him by Wolfgang Puck? I know Mario Batalli has a story he told about working under MPW, the guy who trained Gordon Ramsay, and he shoved a boiling hot pan of risotto on to him.
@@prodigypenn MPW was the best. The youngest chef to win 3 Michelin stars, the godfather of Ramsay, Batali, and so many others. He was the first celebrity chef and was regarded as a rockstar in the culinary world.
One time I was working at a restaurant with an open kitchen (guests could see us, we could see them) and this guy sent his food back 3 times. The chef went around the counter to the mans table, the conversation started pretty calmly but escalated quickly and ended with the chef yelling at the top of his lungs telling the man to stand up and get tf out. He did say everyone else could stay and finish their dinner but the man nearly got dragged out of the restaurant 😂
@@williammckay48 How can you possibly say that's not the case? You're not a woman. There are women in this video who are chefs and are TELLING you that that's what they've experienced. You wouldn't know as a male, so who are you tell someone else their experience is not real. This is why we need empathy.
@@TeyonaMiller The reason being is because men are usually naturally more collaborative and more competitive, most women are usually not as competitive or as collaborative due to the fact that most women take breaks more often than Men, statistics show and does genetics.
I vaguely remember watching "Chefs." It had this amazing scene of making a Level 10 Grilled Cheese and it was just beautiful and it inspired me to take my grilled cheese game up a notch.
What I was told and learned from all the kitchens I've worked in and cooked in is that the name/term "chef" should only be used if you are passing on your knowledge. Other than that we are all cooks because with cooking we are always learning.
This was a fun video to watch. I love working in the Culinary Industry and agreed with everything these guys said. In response to the comments below me: Women being in the kitchen is a fairly new concept. Men were the only ones allowed for many years. The idea behind it didn't start up until the late 1800s or so. As for people saying that cooking is fun and they want to be a chef based on what they see in the media, I have this to say: Be a chef, but you need to do research first. It is NOT all fun and games. It is stressful, competitive, tough, and will mentally and physically exhaust you. You need to keep up with trends, ensure sanitation and safety at all times, and know that this is literally a lifestyle choice. Once a chef, always a chef. You'll deal with non-stop work, pressure, stress, etc. You will get yelled at for things you have no control of. The culinary world can be fun, but it's nothing like Food Network depicts it as. Go into this wanting to learn about food. If you try hard and do your best, you can have lots of fun. I love my job as a baker, despite being criticized a lot, not having a lot of free-time, and all the body injuries I've received from my 10+ years in the industry. I originally became jaded thanks to culinary school not meeting my expectations that I had from watching the Food Network/Alton Brown. But once I started learning things and gaining new experiences and meeting amazing people, I began to love it. Sure I put up with mean people and ridiculous requests, but it's worth it in the end.
my late brother was a trained chef, and he would always comment on food scenes from movies and tv... I have respect and admiration for those who work in the food industry because of him!
It's "coat" is at the cleaners but would be more than happy to conduct small talk while it's waiting to get "dressed." 🤣🤣 Seriously, I think he wanted a "black and blue" where the heat barely touches both sides (slap it on the back and put it on a plate while it's still mooing).

Joel I get stressed just thinking about it. But maybe it’d be fun to watch since I don’t have to stand there sweating myself 👌🏼 I’ll check it out
I went to cooking school (not because of Ratatouille... ok maybe a little) for a short semester just to see what it was like in real life.
@@weeklypositivitea9220 so how are you doing now? still cooking?
Ratatouille is a god damn masterpiece
I worked in a ton of restaurants when I was younger and Ratatouille is by far the most accurate depiction of boh work.
I so enjoy these videos where someone inside the profession evaluates cinematic representations of that profession. Love the insight and clarity offered!
It’s funny how movies make things look way different than in real life and that since people have no experience with the subject on the movie screen, they end up thinking that the movies are realistic.
"It just works"
Haven't seen you in a while. Please go away again.

When I took a Culinary class, we had to watch Ratatouille and write an essay on it.
(X) Doubt
R/thathappened
Cameron Robertson I honestly had to lol we had to list down the rights and the wrongs of the movie then write an essay about it
Maybe I should add that it was a Culinary class in a high school and maybe it’d make more sense
Makes me hungry
Ray, how are you literally everywhere
Everywhere I go I see you
So this is where it started pls reply
How the heck are you everywhere
Everywhere I go I see his face...
You know I never thought I'd ever hear the sentence "You have to prove yourself as a woman in the kitchen". 100 years ago most men had never boiled water
Not the kitchen at home, but yes it was still the case a long time ago when it involved a professional side ...men were chosen when it was a career
Women are always expected to cook (and do any other kind of domestic labour) 'cause that's "where they belong" but as soon as there's compensation involved and it's an actual career they're overlooked.
@Aesthetic Decision a like for your dad. Top notch cook.
Yeah I'm pretty sure women don't have to prove themselves in the kitchen. It's definitely men
Catering assistant here (Glorified dishwasher) totally agree about keeping a clean station. Your kitchen assistants also really appreciate a steady flow of dishes rather than everything at the end of service. It just makes everyone's life easier.
Clean as you go. Mise En Place. Best advice I ever learned in the industry. It's why I get out on time while my boss always late. =P

Arfnudaniack Blue RIP bourdain
@@bobbythecajun7869 I am assuming thet was Anthony Bourdain that had eggs thrown at him by Wolfgang Puck? I know Mario Batalli has a story he told about working under MPW, the guy who trained Gordon Ramsay, and he shoved a boiling hot pan of risotto on to him.
@@prodigypenn MPW was the best. The youngest chef to win 3 Michelin stars, the godfather of Ramsay, Batali, and so many others. He was the first celebrity chef and was regarded as a rockstar in the culinary world.
@@abiromu I am familiar with MPW and his background
@@abiromu The first celebrity chef was Alexis Soyer. He was so famous that there used to be public tours of his kitchens at the Reform Club
He did say everyone else could stay and finish their dinner but the man nearly got dragged out of the restaurant 😂
the Jeju chefs are really insightful

@mythicalm Bruh, that's not the case, even if it was it's because the dudes are likely to be more successful somehow.
@@williammckay48 because men bring men up and push women down as soon as it involves money and prestige
They should a video where the real chefs review cooking in anime.

How do you not know Goodfellas?
I vaguely remember watching "Chefs." It had this amazing scene of making a Level 10 Grilled Cheese and it was just beautiful and it inspired me to take my grilled cheese game up a notch.
What I was told and learned from all the kitchens I've worked in and cooked in is that the name/term "chef" should only be used if you are passing on your knowledge. Other than that we are all cooks because with cooking we are always learning.
"It's not fun but it's rewarding... sometimes."
this was a lot more interesting than I thought it would be, I never knew how difficult kitchen life could be

The reaction to actor chefs was awesome. I liked this one.
Somebody just has to say it :
THERE IS NO CHEESE OR MEAT IN RATATOYY IT’S ACTUALLY %90 VEGETABLES
You mean ratatouille ? I don't think the version in the movie showed meat or cheese, so not sure what you're referring to....?
There’s cheese and meat in ratatouille.
Yo Buzzfeed, thanks for this, please do a part 2, there gotta be more cooking scenes out there
Why didn't they watch Hannibal? 👀👀
I need to see professional chefs watching Shokugeki no Souma, now...
3:36 Ratatouille
Ratatouille is the reason why I want to be a chef
Oh dear lord, good luck.
Just stick to samurai-ing
Burnt was pretty accurate with the intensity of working on the line in the kitchen
Not surprising. He spent months in Gordon Ramseys Kitchen.
