1:12 Hemingway made a lot of people hate him because of this. He used the Thompson to scare off sharks that came to take bites of large catches or ram ventilated fish that he had to tow alongside the boat. The only problem is that when he would shoot the sharks, their blood would draw more sharks to the boat, which he would also shoot, and the cycle repeated itself. One time, he and an artist friend named Henry “Mike” Strater caught a ~1000 lb marlin. Ernest defended his catch in the traditional way, and by the time they were able to get it out of the water and strung up, the sharks had claimed at least half of the marlin, which is why I said “~1000 lb marlin”, because they were only able to estimate the weight of the whole marlin visually using what was left, around 500 lbs. This catch severely hurt the friendship between the two men, as Strater rightly blamed the eventual state of the fish on Hemingway’s liberal use of an SMG to defend their catch. This marlin is also widely considered to have inspired the events of “The Old Man and the Sea”, although I don’t think he ever confirmed it. TL,DR: whatever Zach says in the rest of this video about Ernest Hemingway is most likely true and easily verifiable, usually by way of Hemingway himself.
"Zach. The book is already thick enough" and "right-handed advantage" (whispered on the NV badlands video) made me chuckle far too much. Thanks for being you Mike ❤
If you know Hemingway's life story, you know he absolutely would not disagree with the notion that anything can be improved by adding a shotgun. In fact in some circles (specifically the one including me and no one else), it's believed that his quote "The first draft of anything is shit" is in reference to the fact that most first drafts do not include a shotgun in them.

Jesus. I only just now learnt of this and it was a formative anime for me when I was a kid. Death of the artist and all that, but IDK if I can rewatch the old series.
I had never even heard of the series (not gonna lie bit of a normie with my favorite manga being dragon ball and one piece) but yeah after a quick google search I was like “well that’s one series I know not to support” I’m actually glad I heard of the controversy before hearing of the series itself because I wouldn’t want to support a person convicted of something like that. And that’s with me being a person that believes that an artist can be separated from their art like lovecraft who of course Mike referenced in the video, but that standard can only go so far and in this case I just wouldn’t be able to do it.
I learned about that years ago. I don't support him any further though I had had all the volumes that were out at the time and the anime so you know I'd already supported him and was good at that point. Rurouni Kenshin is still one of my favorite manga and anime.
I recall playing Doom 3 with a mod that added an option to tweak the shotgun spread, I used it to narrow the cone down to 0 degrees, And I had what is basically a slug rounds as a result, and could truly see that devastation the shotgun could make with every pellet connected, it was pretty much have same damage output that rocket launcher does if my math is correct. Made the game so much easier and even less fun to play to be honest. Ah, those days when I couldn't afford internet.

47:40 There are more positions on a chess board than there are atoms in the universe (if you count illegal moves). Of course he doesn't know how many there are.
I'll probably update this as I watch, though I am eating so gimme a minute. I'll try to share anything I think people might find helpful, especially things the game doesn't actually tell you (of course, that means I may be wrong about some of these, so if you have conflicting experiences, please reply so we can try to keep this as accurate and helpful as possible for players, both new and experienced). This is such a good game and was probably the roguelike that made me realize just how addicted I am to the formula thereof. First thing's first, go into settings and turn off the screen flash. It gets rid of that red flash each time a piece dies at the end of a floor. It can be REALLY painful to look at, so I highly recommend this. 0:04:58 the arc blinking is linked to your range. "Range" in this is similar to ranged weapons in D&D. You have two ranges: close and far, indicated by the two numbers. So your range of "3-5" indicates that when you fire, your shot's pellets have a 100% chance to travel this distance. When the arc is flashing, it indicates you're in "far" range. At this point, each pellet seems to have a 50% chance to keep travelling until it hits the end of the far range. Once it's solid black, it means none of your pellets can travel that far. I recommend turning the Folly Shields off in your settings once you beat Throne at least 1-3 times. There's an Achievement for clearing a run without ever activating one. However, sometimes you want to bank on killing a threatening piece because you literally have no other options. But if the current arc and/or range means you're not guaranteed to kill with that shot, you'll still have to burn through the Folly Shields before it lets you fire. I just turned them off to help me work on that, and it forced me to start thinking ahead just that little bit extra. It's actually helped me improve quite a bit at reading the board and predicting the flow of the game. There are a LOT of Achievements for clearing a run with a specific combination of modifier cards. Usually they come in sets of 3 different cards of the same color, all of which have similar/related effects. A couple of them are literally "take this card three times in the same run and win". As Zach and Mike mention, keeping your firing arc narrow is good. Basically, your Firepower stat is the number of 1-damage pellets that generate whenever you shoot. Each pellet travels in a straight line that goes out from your center within your Arc. The line will never be at a "skewed" angle; it will always start at the center of your square and travels out from there. With cards like Extra Barrel and Blunderbuss, it is literally possible to have a >180-degree Arc. Yes, you can literally fire a shot and have one or more pellets go *behind you*. It's stupid, it's unreliable, and it is HILARIOUS. One of my best runs was a "Blunderbuss" run where I had an Arc of... oh gods, I'm gonna look for the screenshot I took... oh gods, I forgot it started with The Victoria, a single-shot with a narrow arc. On Floor 11 (endless run) I had a second barrel and had taken Blunderbuss twice. I had an Arc of 132 degrees... Yeah, this game lets you get REALLY dumb. Learn how to find the useful aspects of certain White cards, as well as the detrimental aspects of certain Black cards. Sometimes, a certain card may seem really bad or really good, but you will find that just like in Slay The Spire, Pokémon, and a lot of other games, everything has its potential use. Getting the White cards that add more Pawns can actually be really good when you take Cannon Fodder to pump your next shot's Firepower by burning Pawn Souls. Btw, that card's buff stays in effect until you shoot again. With multiple Soul slots and/or a good Blade stat, you can fire some INSANELY strong shots by just farming a few Pawns here and there. Just watch out for promotions and Backup timers. 0:30:27 As you see with how the Cannonball works, some modifiers ONLY appear after taking other specific ones. Since you have to throw the Cannonball to use it, that means you won't encounter it until *after* taking King's Shoulders. Some modifiers are unlocked by having a certain sub-weapon or stat, so there may be multiple cards you can find that will unlock the possibility to find that. Thus, taking something like grenades, a card that adds Blade, or something that applies Bleed can allow you to further improve the effects of those things. It's usually good to take something like that earlier in the run so you can have as many chances as possible to further improve it. 0:34:27 On the note of Achievements, there's one for using King's Shoulders to pick up the White Queen and take her ALL THE WAY BACK to the exact space you started on. Some other fun ones are "As It Should Be", where the White side has exactly 1 each of Kings & Queens, 2 each of Bishops, Knights, and Rooks; and 8 Pawns. Perhaps two of my favorites are both ones I got at the same time by pure accident. One is for blowing yourself up with a grenade. The other is for doing so while ALSO taking out the last remaining enemy "monarch" piece. I, uh... didn't know those were Achievements until I got them. Sure laughed my ass off when it happened, though.
Fun fact: Hemingway once went hunting for Nazi U-Boats using his own personal yacht *The Pilar,* armed with machine guns, bazookas and handgrenades, all of which was provided by the U.S government.

"Lots of games can be improved with a shotgun"
Unless it's DOOM 3's
No, it would be better if it had a proper shotgun, instead of whatever they made for it.
Consider that Doom 3 is full of Corridors, something that a short range shotgun can make use of it. you have bullets for ranged damage.
You know what's not improved by a shotgun? Grunge music
Do you consider Foo Fighters to be grunge, though? I wish Kurt was still around, but I doubt Foo Fighters would have happened if he hadn't died.
Does it count if the shotgun was clearly used in an incorrect manner?
