Why does sometime Big Boy 4014 unneed diesel locomotive?

The footage of it running without it's diesel helper was due to SD70M 4015 having issues so they decided to run the Big Boy to Houston without the helper engine until after Houston used another locomotive for the way back to Cheyenne
