- The Carousel Mall, also known as Central City Mall, was a mixed-use two-story shopping mall located in San Bernardino, California, along the city's former main downtown street. The mall opened in 1972 and officially closed in 2017. The mall has been abandoned since 2017 with plans for demolition at the end of 2022.

When I grew up in the 70-80’s the Central City Mall as it was called then was like shopping paradise. My bro bought me a bunch of Star Wars toys at the Kaybee toys, bought all the hip clothes at Chess King as a teen and I remember watching Batman Forever with my young family at the time
I remember the kb toys store, the bookstore, big boy before it became a carls jr, the $1 movie theater, and of course the cool dragon from the carousel
I love those JETSON style plastic and fiberglass round seating areas! They were so futuristic looking!
those were always cool to me
I was stationed at Norton AFB from 1990 to 1994 when the base closed. When we first arrived in SB it was still Cenral City, but changed to Carousel soon after. My wife and I were all of 21 yrs old and we would take our 3yo daughter there every so often to shop, hang out, and of course ride the carousel. Its sad to see some of the times and places that hold these memories come to an end.
Thanks for sharing your memories
I remember going there when I was little to ride the carousel. So sad to see it now.
I miss this place
When I Was In Foster Care I’ll Have My Visits With My Mom Here ❤
awesome, thanks for sharing your memories
Looks like this was once a great mall.Sad to see it gone. Thanks Eric!.😎
In 2001 I rode pass this mall and lamented that this is another example of failure in San Bernardino 😢
I used to see the Carousel Mall whenever my family and I would travel up and down I-215. I always wanted to check it out; but my family would always do our shopping in malls/shopping centers in Riverside or Moreno Valley.
I can also remember going to Harris’ when that was the only store and no mall attached, as a kid. The store itself was like a mall and always busy.
mom gave us $0.10 for ice cream and we'd ride the bus instead to Harris' to ride the elevator and play on the 4th floor toy dept.
My family used to go there in the 80s and it was really nice. I remember there was even a guy in a tux that played the piano near the place we would get ice cream (haagen daz maybe?). I loved the water fountains. We frequented the Bobs Big Boy next to the movie theater as well. But by the early 90s the place went downhill fast and had garned a rep of being gang infested.
Hence the rebrand to Carousel mall soon after. It didn't take. Also malls were already on the decline and there were too many other nearby competing malls.
thanks for sharing your memories about this mall.
That area has always been SKETCH. I went to Uni at CSUSB and worked along E street in another lifetime ago with a large window looking out toward the mall. Lots of crazy stuff went down. I hope the city can take care of the property and turn it into something nice.
I hope so too. The whole area is run down.
It’s a darn shame San B use to be a city desired to live in long long ago it is beyond run down the local leaders don’t care at all I hope for the same too 😞
I saw a dude jacking off in braid daylight in front of that mall
Sadly just now saw that’s it’s being torn down really sad to me I grew up going there
Seriously?
Always seemed like a fun trip to visit this mall as it seemed so massive back then. Fond memories.
I lived there when it was built , we used to only have the Inland Center Mall , i left in 2000 and visited few years ago wont be going back . thanks for the memory !
thanks for watching
I used to hang out at Central City Mall in Downtown San Bernardino a lot in the 90s....

There was even a pretty nice multi screen theater and a large Carl’s Jr in the mall back in the day
It's completely gone now. Demolition started maybe a week ago. All the stores there were in business when I went there once in 1996, or 97.
thank you for that, I may make a stop to record some of that. Thanks.
If I recall, it had a orange juilius in it back in the mid 80s. I was at home sick in the 5th grade and recall my mom taking to the mall to get some things and we ate there.
Thank you for sharing your memories
I remember the theater and going to a lot of movies there. The admission was afordible and the shows was new releases.😢😊😊
I hope that someone buys the big pink clocks before they level the place! I'd do it if I could afford it.
"Why didn't you ever go to the Carousel Mall?" "If you go to a McDonald's in a city where they have security glass and bars in front of the cash registers? I am not going to a mall in that same city."
I have actually been to this mall twice. Once in 1996 when it was still a mall and second, in 2013 when it was an empty business strip mall. It was pretty scary.
I my opinion of you grew up in the inland empire you wouldn’t be afraid to go into the carousel mall then again I grew up going to this mall. Perhaps NOW yeah I’d agree 100% and in its later years this mall went down hall BADDD but in the late 90’s there was nothing scary about it.
@@lululestat When I went in 1996, it wasn't bad at all, went to take pictures there with my friend since she grew up in the area. But it was in 2013 that it had pretty much been a business strip mall and nothing like the mall I remembered
Riding the carousel in the early 1980 Christopher Michael west
Remember Central City more than the Carousel Mall
Spent LOTS of time there during the Central City days...Was a bit older when the carousel went in and it seemed a bit late (and lame) to save it. NEVER saw or had anything sketchy about it until I had moved away and got the reputation. I'd go to the huge Carl's Jr. then walk across to Millers Outpost and pick me up a Spuds McKenzie tee shirt. The Harris' had a restaurant on the upper level that always seemed was for "grown ups"
thanks for sharing your memories
In 96 you said the mall was looking empty that because the Ontario mills mall a few miles east had just opened that year. It was a much bigger mall with a large gameworks arcade. Dave & busters. Improve & 2 large multiplex theaters
I went to the Carousel Mall in 1996 to take pictures of my friends there. It was pretty empty then. As for the Ontario Mills is was new at that time and I would go to Dave and Busters with my friends since we were in college at that time. You were paying attention. Thanks.
I heard that along with the gang violence the city overall population from what I believe was a airforce base that closed in san bernadino. great video!
I was born here it’s sad
For many years on trips to California, staying with my Aunt, Uncle & cousins in San Bernardino, we'd go to Inland Center Mall, then we used to go to Central City instead, apparently IC ended up not being a good place to go to, so that's why my aunt liked going to Central City instead!!
Inland Center Mall is still there though. Which I guess is sad if your folks preferred Central City to Inland.
Man....I worked at the Mall from 94-96 downstairs next to the sketchers store. Back then the vibe was like something out of "waiting"....super chill, the on duties never messed with anyone, once a year I got to chase people around with a fake chainsaw at the haunted house and if the walls could talk, they'd be talking about filming a porno cause EVERYONE was fucking...really fun times..
sad to see it go but all good things ya' know...I saw "the Crow" 10 times in that theater cause why not, it was only 2 bucks...
Fun memories of a life once lived on a carousel ..
take care

Yeah I was born in San Bernardino, CA and I remember that mall I went there a lot. I moved to Washington State but visited the mall in 2005 and saw how things had already went down hill I also heard how San Bernardino went down hill as well.
Its sad that it is closed now. I did a couple of videos of what it looks like now. I drove around the place too. I will send you the link.
I went there as a teenager 13-15 years old back in 1993-1995. Was gang infested, and just a lot of trouble.
It's finally getting demolished, starting today.
sad to hear that
Even before it went to hell it was always an also ran mall.
It's just been razed to the ground. Just the small details left to clean up.
Did they tear down the old Harris building?
@@LindaFromSeaAtTull I didn't drive by to survey on purpose so it dawned on me that the place was flattened as I was mostly past. I'm mostly sure it's all gone though.
