Here in zone 5b and I have a beautiful red Japanese maple multi trunk tree that I planted in a corner in front of my house . It’s about 12 yrs old and 15 feet tall . Never babied it during winter and never fertilized and it’s a stunning red show during spring and fall.
Several years ago I had a few 2 year grafts Japanese Maples planted in the ground and that spring we got a cold snap as they were leafing out, the night before I put large paper bags on them to protect from frost, morning sun came and by afternoon...bad idea, it cooked 2 and only 2 survived. Should've used cloth so air could pass through. Zone 6a Indiana, near Cincinnati.
Zone 5b here. All containers go to my unheated garage below 10F. Snow is also a great insulator which is something not mentioned in the video and drying wind is a major killer for my containers. The ones in the ground are on their own. I do everything mentioned here and they survive the polar vortex’s. I’d love to see what cultivars you think are more cold hardy.
I got my order in 2 days! Awesome-looking plants! Keep the daily videos coming. Just put all my plants in the garage for this cold snap in Hope Mills, NC, zone 8a.

Japanese maples grown in large wooden whiskey barrel containers can withstand Chicago winter (6b) outdoors in a semi protected area by the house. They also do fine in raised beds over a concrete driveway.
Thanks for the tips-I didn’t know to not fertilize after May so thank you for that! I’m in southern Maine so zone 5 and this will be my first winter with my bee Japanese maple. I’ve read a lot about wrapping in burlap to overwinter-do you have any insight on this- like when to start the wrap, which material is best , and when to take off in spring. Thanks guys!
Zone 5b here … I have JP maples in the ground and in containers. And so far, I’ve had good luck with all. I just take the containers inside the garage with large east facing windows during winter. Mr Maple Podcast
Really liked this video. It's good to know I shouldn't feed with a high nitrogen into the later summer months. My maples are smaller and I like to hear more about the best way to care for grafted maples in containers. Mr. Maple podcast
I am in Chicago and will be bringing my Japanese maples in for the winter into my 3-car garage. I also park my car inside. I have three large windows. Should I put the maples near the windows? Do I cover the sides from the draft when pulling in and opening the doors? Do I keep the windows closed or open? Any link to a video that could be helpful?
Zone 5B with 2 Japanese maples still in nursery pots. My garage doesn't get much or any natural light, so if i bring them in during the winter are there going to be any issues, and if so, what can i do??
It’s tricky for sure. They have to be protected in pots in zone 5 for sure. I would plant them or plant the pots if you don’t want to keep them in a garage.
Our maple is in the ground, close to the house we are in Michigan in 6a. We are experiencing temps around -1 to -5 with a windchill of -35 to -40 at times. I mulched well and It definitely went dormant before this Winter Storm Elliott came in. Should I cover it at all? Wrap in burlap or ground cloth for the next couple days? Or anything else? Thank you!
#japanesemaples great info for the colder zones especially. Lost a purple thunder early spring this past year bc I wasn’t home to cover the tender new growth before extreme frost/cold snap came thru and nipped it dead 🙁. You live you learn, all part of learning I guess. Gray video and info like always.
Can I put my Japanese maple outside in zone 5 when it just barely rooted were neg 30 and higher it's still in its humidity hood I tried to get it out and the leaves started to die I took it inside when nights got cold then I worried about going dormant now it's in my heated green house...HELP
So it's ok to keep it inside for the first year. ,I took it out of the green house and put in un heated shed out during the day but we had earlier snow than usual so now it still I the unheard shed should I bring it back in the house
@MrMapleShow the pot is only 12 inch dia and 12 inch depth. All the roots are going to freeze. These 3 are mikawa yatsubusas. Even with soil and root freeze (in their dormancy) they will survive?

Can't wait for the list of more cold trees.

Hey Colin
I’m in Nebraska and so didn’t want to deal with moving them in and out of garage …

Best video, MRMAPLE PODCAST. Thanks!
Can I keep my Japanese Maple planted in my garden during winter at maximum -10 Celcius ? And if so would it regrow new leaves in Spring?
Everywhere I drive I see many Japanese maples in Vaughan which is zone 6a. The few I’ve talked to wrap it in burlap as well
I have a tamukeyama in front yard that gets morning sun 7am-12 and an emperor 1 that gets sun from 12-6pm. Any tips for some 6a

Please do talk more soon about zone 4. I have been growing bonsai trees the last few years, winter can be tough, but with most maples it is do-able.

Can you do a video on zone 4 winter hardy Japanese maples? How to winter maples in zone 3-4?
It does get limited to Acer psudosieboldianum cultivars for zone 4

Windchill temps don’t effect plants only true temps
I’m not doing anything different here in 6b Nc at -1 degrees
@@MrMapleShow great! Thank you!
I dig Mr. Maple.
Will they live in Alberta where it gets -35 Celsius ?
Zones 5-9 so typical is only to -24
@@MrMapleShow what would be a god tree that is somewhat similar that I could use in my front yard and can handle our cold weather
I dig Mr. Maple
Hi what should I do with my just rooted Japanese maple will it go dormant in a heated green house
Depends on how heated. Gradually decreasing temps works best
Great tips as always. Mr. Maple Gift Card.

In an unheated garage, (6b) against a window, they leaf out earlier. That is a problem, I did lose several maples to that
Better off outside as we recommend in the video for zone 6. Only bring in during extreme changes in zone 6

Same answer. I’m in 6b and nothing here is heated at all at the entire nursery. Only bring them inside during extreme changes in zone 6
@MrMapleShow ok thank you much
