This was one of my favourite vignettes as a kid. It wasn’t until I was an adult, though, that I really grew to love the sketches that make up the story. Simply drawn, but stunning, and absolutely perfect for the narration.

These are so good Canadian we should know more and should be promoted more as we grow. I remember sitting in the movie theater, and these would come on such a history should be shared.

What a heroic story of two brave men, Wop May and Vic Homer, rising to the challenge of a dangerous trek to deliver humanitarian aid. Brought tears to my eyes.

There is a movie with James Cagney called "Captain of the clouds" 1942. It's a movie about Canadian RAF fighter pilots that couldn't fly again because they were too old and they went onto become bush pilots.

Most people do not realize just how dangerous and unreliable the first Aircraft where. Just to fly them was a major challenge little lone having people shooting at you on top of that. The courage of these men such as Wop May would be very hard to find these days.

The only factual error was the Australian machine gun killing the Baron. The fatal shot came from Roy Brown's Sopwith Camel. The Australian machine made the second shot that caused the dead Baron to let go of the lever and the plane came down.

@@manfromthehorizon3870 actually, that's under debate. No-one's ever been able to figure out who actually killed the Red Baron, only that it could have been either Brown or the Australian gunners.

When we got married, we travelled back and forth between Montreal and London on Wardair. Max Ward had been a bush pilot himself and named his aircraft for known Canadian bush pilots. We flew to England on a Boeing 747 and returned on a DC-10. In that time, several DC-10s had crashed in short order. I noted that the aircraft that we were returning on was named for Wilfrid (Wop) May. This struck me as a bad omen - flying on a DC-10 named for the last intended victim of the Red Baron !

No. Wilfred May. Wilfred is far from being an Italian name. But maybe your'e just joking around.
