+jimmie darks "And that would be the point, "worldly," as in selfish motivation, not the good or benefit of others. One day, ALL of us will know the truth." Educating yourself is selfish? What about his quote is false?
+jimmie darks LOL! In other words, you have no answer to my questions. Boy, that's rich. YOU are the one bringing up something that has zero to do with the video, which was simply a pleasant tour of a home office/library. And yet you have the gall to tell ME to "stick with the point"? How about answering what I asked? You know you can't. And won't. ETA: Yeah, just what I thought. Crickets.
I don't get these notifications always, so I missed answering your question. If you have a non-God perspective, then it would be true. As I understand the statement referred to books give life, and they can, just depends on what kind of life you want. No, educating yourself is not selfish. My point was educating yourself for self-purposes only, and not contribute to the good and benefit of others is selfish. Knowledge without wisdom in applying the knowledge is useless, and not for the benefit of others, again, is selfish. Hope I answered your questions. My apologies for taking so long. Just got a notification today.
Love this! Those book shelves are beautiful. I love the shelf of Gary North with the beer bottle book ends. Crossed Fingers is a spectacular history of the Presbyterian Church. Thanks for doing this video!
I recognize some of my library which I am just diving into. The Hendrickson Ante-Nicene, Nicene, and Post-Nicene Fathers; the Baker edition of Schaff's Creeds of Christendom. When anybody asks me if I have read all my books, I answer "of course not!". These are reference books. I use the indexes to refer to them as needed, and their bibliographies to research more deeply. When I want to discover what the Ante-Nicene fathers thought about a topic, I consult the index of subjects. When I want to see what they said about each verse I consult the index of texts. A well-researched index, bibliography, or syntopicon is worth its weight in gold as it saves hours of research.
I never thought I'd hear Girard (prophet) and Piper (obsolete) mentioned in the same sentence. Like Will Hunting might say, those are a lot of books, too bad they're the wrong ones (except Girard of course).
+REDRAGON12345 Yes. Novel to study, but that's where Piper's relevance ends to this chaplain ministering in the real world. Out of touch with reality. Philosophically shaky, inconsistent with a cosmology informed by quantum awareness, but most troubling is the utter incongruence and even abusive the model is toward the deep suffering of this world. But I'm a process oriented universalist who, believe it or not, is ordained by a major evangelical denomination. Oh and I happen to live in the same city as Piper so I have particular proximity to the vitriol and lack of pastoral (care) depth that has come from his church. And don't get me started on women. Obsolete in all these ways. Piper more or less perpetuates Charles Hodge. Seriously out dated.
Coming from an Arminian-Wesleyan perspective, I find Piper completely outdated (and overrated), but perhaps for different reasons than you. Still, I find most myself in agreement with much of what you've said.
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis All Creatures Great and Small by James Harriot (very amusing and fun to read) A rule with reading books....If you don't like the book by the end of the second chapter, don't read it. Find one you like.
Does he have a copy of the Greek Septuagint? Does he have any of Frank Schaffer or Jaroslav Pelikans series The Christian Tradition Does he have anything by A.W. Tozier?
+InkTechnique --Umm, what's your point? He obviously doesn't have those books nor those authors books there. If he did he'd certainly shown or mentioned them. He should rea CS Lewis's "The bus Ride" which he obviously hasn't read. If he had he wouldn't have all the other books he has.
MrOphachew is absolutely right. Doug very clearly named the title of each and every book on his shelves. He didn’t just name the general categories. I don’t remember hearing those names.
Just recently found you through looking at Theonomy you teach more about it than most but can you do a thorough teaching on it? There is so much to learn from it seems alll want to stay away from it we as Christians must know at least to be a standard of our laws ,there is much to learn from it ,hope you and Durbin get a group and discuss the issue of what laws we keep because as little as I know about it most people say ,well that was the Old Testament, and some things the O.T. Does not make sense or does it? I know it is a standard and hard to enforce ,but our country needs help ,we are a nation of ostriches ,I have heard you on it and you make so much sense,JESUS SPEED TO YOUR MINISTRY,SEEMS THE HOLY SPIRIT HAS BEEN LOST THESE FEW CENTURIES IN THIS WORLD ,it only thrives in the hearts of some,I am the worlds biggest sinner but the LORD JESUS SAVED ME,and I love to hear sermons on subjects because I love hard preaching THANK YOU
the only correct way to organise books is by colour of spine; try it, it will improve your life at least 1 percent (results may vary)(comment writer takes no responsibility for adverse effects)
And now you can have all those books on kindle. Easier to highlight, cut and paste into other documents, make notes, and cheaper. But the biggest benefit (for old eyes) is that you can make the font big as you like.
... and this is important, why? ...'Of the making of many books there is no end'. Rather, "O how love I they Law... it is my meditation all the day." Little time for else. How sad and telling that so much money and time is spent on the writings of men... when at the same age, in these last days, God's Holy Word, Inspired, Infallible, AND PRESERVED, is once again being hidden from sight under a massive pile of men's writings and professorial criticism... writings purporting to be the Holy Word, yet needing copyrights sworn by the writers as their original authors, to protect profits! When confronted with substitutes and altered words, I ask... "which one are you going to burn?". Beware, man with his books will soon be forgotten, His Holy Word alone remains forever. "Time, like an ever rolling stream, Bears all its sons away; They fly forgotten, as a dream Dies at the opening day." (Psalm 90)
I read books from men who help and teach me how to meditate upon God's word. It's really helpful considering what God may have been teaching His people in history. We can also learn a lot from history, including the mistakes of our forefathers and we can praise God for what He has done in and through His church in previous generations. Obviously, these are all subservient to the direct reading and meditating upon God's word for ourselves. I want my minister to be well-read so he can both minister to the souls of the flock and know how to interact with the world around us faithfully. Blessings.
If I'm being honest with myself, I can't help but admire someone who has that much respect and appreciation of books.
Doug's one of my heroes in the ministry. I havent been able to get enough of him recently.
I struggle with covetousness as I behold this magnificent collection of texts...
I appreciate a pastor who has beer bottles in his office.
Cicero once said "that a home without books is like a body without a soul". A great quote from a very wise and worldly man!
And that would be the point, "worldly," as in selfish motivation, not the good or benefit of others. One day, ALL of us will know the truth.

What about stick with the point? Ludicrous question, I'm sure you know.

4:40 picture of Stonewall Jackson!! Love it!
Ah! You noticed that as well.... gotta love uncle Doug! Lol.
I discovered Doug Wilson's 'channel' as they say and have profited from his thoughts. Now I must order one of his books.
Cool to see some from my own collection in Doug's as well!
Amazing collection!
I appreciate that modernism/post modernism/emergent church is not only on the bottom shelf, but on the bottom shelf and behind a cart full of books.
I want to spend several hours looking through all of that
Come on Doug- why are your Bibles on the bottom shelf? They're top shelf material.
"...Then organization creeps back in." Real feels.
Miles Monroe, I'm confused I'm all for having a positive attitude and disposition but positive confession in a Reformed library
+Stephanie Royal Maybe h=Doug is hopefully reading it to contrast it to biblical/historic Christianity
Doug, we didn't notice a section of your own writings. Do you keep a collection of all the books you've authored? My son and I were wondering. Thanks.
Look at 5:30 in the video.

Thanks, I missed that the first time 🙂

Why is there a myles munroe book? Very confused...
I'm confused as to way he said F.F. Bruce is in the reconstructionism category. Is there something I'm missing?
Where's your sections on Wesley and Arminius? ;)
I know I saw at least the 3-volume Works of James Arminius :)
I never thought I'd hear Girard (prophet) and Piper (obsolete) mentioned in the same sentence. Like Will Hunting might say, those are a lot of books, too bad they're the wrong ones (except Girard of course).
You think John Piper is obsolete?
+REDRAGON12345 Yes. Novel to study, but that's where Piper's relevance ends to this chaplain ministering in the real world. Out of touch with reality. You should put all your Metzger and F.F. Bruce books on a single shelf.
Call it the F.F. Bruce Metzger shelf.
N. T. Wright? I like the picture of Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson.
Wow! John piper and Rene Girard together! How does that work?
He who dies with the most books wins.
I get the Munroe book, but why a picture of Stonewall Jackson?
Wow. He is a very wealthy man.
That's a library. 😁
Stoppeth the press. What are those large, white tomes of C.S. Lewis's there? Does anyone know?
Awesome :)
Anyone else looking for the yellow dust jacket of "god is Not Great", or am I the only C.H. fan here?
Cha-chang! @ 4:17
I´d love to start up reading. My concentrations is low :P , but someday I will force myself. Anyone know a good easy beginner book?
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis
All Creatures Great and Small by James Harriot (very amusing and fun to read)
A rule with reading books....If you don't like the book by the end of the second chapter, don't read it. Find one you like.
Calvins Institutes
Bible
Did I see a book by Myles Munroe??? Say it ain't so!!!
I saw Twilight
He might be using it to contrast it with a true Biblical worldview. Ownership of a book does not entail endorsement.
Does he have a copy of the Greek Septuagint? Does he have any of Frank Schaffer or Jaroslav Pelikans series The Christian Tradition Does he have anything by A.W. Tozier?
+MrOphachew
Yes.
+InkTechnique --Don't see 'em. didn't see or hear anything about Meyendorf, Gillquist or Esubeus either.
Umm, what's your point? He has more books at home, and he obviously didnt mention every book in his library by name.

This is a crazy, nuts, Mad man sent to storm the gates of hell
With the rest of us
God bless Douglas Wilson
did i see the book "Gods big idea" by NAR charlatan Myles Monroe?
I've heard of many of these authors, but never of Doug Wilson...sorry.
the only correct way to organise books is by colour of spine; try it, it will improve your life at least 1 percent (results may vary)(comment writer takes no responsibility for adverse effects)
No PlayStation?
LOL
Myles Munroe???!!! What? Can someone explain that? =O
He is probably using it to contrast with what the Bible actually says.
And now you can have all those books on kindle. Easier to highlight, cut and paste into other documents, make notes, and cheaper. But the biggest benefit (for old eyes) is that you can make the font big as you like.
But you can’t check them out.

So much source material to plagiarize from.
