Im 63 yrs old & owned a 64 coupe deville and we worked on my pals 63 fleetwood brougham as well as many other GM cars of the 60's and 70's - FYI theres an easily found cheap tool made specifically for taking those window crank clips off, makes it an easy ten second job and wont harm the door panel material. Also the most likely reason your door light is intermittent is the door switch in the door jamb, the grease inside the switch gets thick and holds the button from moving freely, either pop the switch out or maybe leave it in place as its just a pop in fit and spray some electronics cleaner inside - it will clean and thin the old grease in the switch then work it in and out a few times, it will usually pop in and out freely again. I know these old Caddys well, we also did an engine swap on the 63 fleetwood as the old 390 was neglected and worn out, we luckily found a 429 from a 64 and it dropped right in - we were doing this back in the 70's as teenagers taking two years of auto mechanics in vocational school so we really wanted to save the old fleetwood as the body was near perfect shiny black with the auxiliiary rear seat heater, something only the fleetwoods had.
It is indeed a shame GM didnt use plastic sheet material behind the door panels (they did in later years) instead of that cheap ass brown paper, plastic would have kept the bottom inside of the door panels dry unlike what youre seeing here, water gets through the paper and soaks into the doors hardboard panel. Unless youre a fanatic about re-using the old stained paper the best thing to do is use the paper as a pattern to make a nice identical plastic sheet to go behind the door panel so it actually waterproofs it instead of using the paper to wick moisture into those original door panels before the get ruined at the bottom - use black duct tape instead of trying to save dried old tape that wont stick. While youre in there lubricate every moving part you can find, theres often a lot of dried up grease etc. that causes the windows to drag and also make it hard on the window motor
Heres a thought - why preserve the damn paper, id be more worried about preserving the door panel than that crappy paper whether its original or not, whose going to see it???
