    Today we look at the Cherry MX Silent switches. I have the Silent Red's, also known as Cherry MX Pink, but the Black's are the same thing, but heavier, and have a slightly deeper tone.
    There's some sound tests with different keyboards. These all have different sounds because of the keyboards themselves. So these are only approximate comparisons.
    Big thanks to Varmilo for the VA68Mg keyboard.

    These tests don't have any quantitative results, since there was no sound meter and there were too many variables with the different keyboards. But we can still get a reasonable idea on the sound they produce. This was also done with quite heavy typing and bottoming out. Thanks :)

    Those soft landing pad's would likely be really great on a Cherry SX scissor switch. I'm not sure why no one makes a optical linear scissor switch as I imagine that would incredible in terms of noise, speed, stability, and reliability. Just scissor switches with soft landing pads would probably be a big improvement to those designs since it would both help further dampen the sound, but also cushion the bottoming on them which due to the extremely low profile quickly happens. Those pink switches look nice much more quiet.

    Excellent video. Best analysis and demo I have seen.
    I prefer the Silents because I think they actually feel better than Reds (which I also like).
    I have two Strafe MX Silent and one Cherry MX board Silent Red. The Cherry board is quieter but all feel great.
    I'm going to buy/try a Cherry MX board Silent Black. I haven't seen that tested yet, and I'm curious about how the greater resistance feels.

    i just bought a silent red switch. i am still an avid blue switch fan but now after using it personally i would say the feeling is not bad, very silent especially for discord, gaming, chatting and etc. it feels so good and so much quiet compare to blue

      @@okene no i don't have any experience with brown. i did many switch testing end up i go silent red (or worst case, just red) because brown is just blue without click. plus brown and regular red still have some bump noises when you type. Silent red however reduce that noise up to 90% that much. i using my blue right now as i type. but i planning to buy a better blue switch in future. my current blue switch is just those cheap budget type, compare to my cherry mx silent red KB.

    It looks like they took a page from silenced Alps (Matias) switches. I'm curious about how that would work in blue/green switches. I really disliked the sound of the blacks and reds, but I liked the blue. The space bar is the big offender, as you pointed out. I don't know if split space bars are meant to address that, but it seems reasonable as modifier-size keys sound okay.
    In this day of materials research it can't be long before they find something that satisfies both finger tips and ears?

    For anyone interested in silent switches, make sure the material of the keyboard case itself doesn't amplify the typing sound. Otherwise any advantage you get from having silent switches will be negated. For example, my Corsair Strafe MK.2 keyboard with silent switches makes way more noise compared to the keyboard with silent switches in this video (yes, just like the video creator, I have a cloth beneath my keyboard to dampen the sound). My guess is that it's probably because Corsair took an existing case design that was already loud by itself, negating any advantage a silent switch could otherwise have.

    Great vid! So glad I found it. I have been on the hunt for a backlit ergo keyboard so that I can work later into the night with minimal light, but the pickins are slim! I was toying with the idea of getting a Mistel MD770 with Cherry MX Silent Reds. I now realize that I need to stick with a membrane keyboard otherwise I'll never get to use it, since my wife will throw it out. She already complained so much about my near-silent mouse that I had to go full-silent.
    Does anybody happen to know of a mechanical setup that gets closer to the sound level of a membrane? It probably won't be backlit, though... or ergo...
    Guess my hunt for a quality silent backlit ergo keyboard will continue, or as someone on Reddit called it, the Unicorn Keyboard.

    I'm curious what type of stabs you have (costar, genuine cherry, chinese knockoff) in the varmillo and if you've made any modifications to them such as lubing and clipping (which are supposed to help with the rattle and overall sound of the stabs).

    I am thinking about ordering a hot swap keyboard and I want to have the silent red switches that allows RGB. Do they sell these switches by themselves, if so please provide a link for me.

    Varmilo VA87M Sakura have retooled Reds and Silvers or old ones? And is there such a thing as Vintage(nonretooled)Silvers?

  • @CThienV
    @CThienV 3 года назад

    They should've added these rubbers while keeping the same dimensions. That would keep travel distance intact.

    Can you feel a difference between the cherry mx red and the cherry mx silent red or is it only the noise?

    • @TaeKeyboards
      @TaeKeyboards  5 лет назад +2

      Yes. Feels softer over all. Dampened bottom and top out feel.

    is it possible to remove the parts on the switches that make them silent, so that they sound more like normal red switches?

  • @FIRE3FLY_

    I had some reds (with a keyboard with like no case, our anything arround the keys) and they were loud, now i have browns with a case arround and its not as loud, but still annoying at night.
    I really wanted speed silvers (bc of the small travel distance and press strenght) but after hearing some keyboard building and ASMR (kinda weird its know, but i find it relaxing) i really want the silentest keyboard or close to it, so now the question.
    Should i buy silent reds or just go for speed or browns (its a ducky keyboard so i can choose any switch basically)

    Waiting on silent browns. So far only Gateron has tried, but they have too much wobble for my liking.

    Is it possible to look into 90% mechanical keyboards? Besides the Cooler Master Quickfire TK, there doesn't seem to be any other big or major brands producing mechanical keyboards with such a unique layout.

    • @TaeKeyboards
      @TaeKeyboards  7 лет назад +1

      There's smaller batches of 96 key keyboards around. Like the ZZ96, which looks amazing. But those are mostly group buys, so I'll see what I can do with Cooler Master :)

    In a few first second I understood how many problems mechanical keyboards have. Isn't it better to buy membrane keyboard and do not ever think about lubrication/sandy switches and so on?
