Hows it bro, tried to do frontal shot with 3 Pro, 12yr old daughter driving, got too close, car hit it, Drone ok apart from obstacle avoidance, any quick fix
In aviation, they have a saying: "Learn from the mistakes of others. You won't live long enough to make them all yourself." Thanks for posting your misadventures so we can cross them off our lists. A valuable service indeed.
Another way to get the shot is to start at your far away point, fly it down and forward, through the narrow gap to where you are standing. Then in editing just play it backwards. That way you might have seen the branch.
This is the way everyone does it,it's impossible to judge when going in reverse,he'll even with fov goggles on its very very difficult to do but only really good professional racers have mastered such an art of doing this freestyle
Nice. Mine wasn't so lucky. Clipped a branch and it fell maybe 15 feet and I guess it landed on the front right arm because it was not as ridged when rotated into flight position at the as the left arm after that. When I replaced the damaged blades, it wouldn't hover right. It acted like it was being attacked by something and was twitching all over the place. DJI replaced it so all is good now. But I've moved on to the Avata for most of my work. After flying FPV I don't feel comfortable flying from the screen on the mini 3 pro unless I'm above everything. I guess knowing I have the prop guards gives me confidence that even a slight contact with anything wont knock it out of the air. Cheers!
I always have obstacle avoidance switches on with my Mini 3 Pro but I rarely, if ever, rely upon it unless I am doing a follow me. Glad you recovered yours successfully. I anticipated that you would have to use your refresh!
Im going on 7 years, flying drones. Not one single crash. Most of my drone flying is at a motocross track (full of trees etc) and over lakes. Chasing our boats and jet-skis. Reckless to say the least. Im thinking you just need a little more seat time D. ;) Great Video buddy!
@@DMProductions lol. Im just gassing ya. Those pull away shots are amazing. I usually just do them moving forward. Then reverse it in post. Thats if there isn't moving objects in the shot. I can't believe you got it down from that tree... lol.
That was a great story! Had to sell my mini 2 for financial reasons, and I miss it. But it's so good to hear your experience, had a very happy ending. 😊
As someone who has gotten quite a few remote controlled airplanes stuck in trees, I have a method for freeing them that normally causes very little damage. I use a set (or multiple sets) of electrician’s wire pulling rods. They are fiberglass rods that screw together so you can make a long fiberglass rod from several short rods. I keep two cheap sets around specifically for freeing stuck aircraft from trees. The cheap sets I use are a little too flexible, which makes them a little harder to use, but they still work, but there are stiffer sets available.
Nice recovery of the drone! I've been flying the M3P for two weeks and I've already had a couple of scary moments, primarily due to not yet knowing the drone's personality and quirks. It's so small and quiet that it's easy to lose track of it.
I had a similar situation about 2 years ago with my Mavic Mini. I had been flying around for some time to get some cool footage and pictures of storm clouds off in the distance. That storm blew in quicker than I thought. My drone had initiated low battery RTH. The winds had come up creating a headwind on the return. My battery had drained to 0 and it was forced to land. I had lost signal and control of the drone. I went to go retrieve it and found it on a neighbor's rooftop. After the storm had blown in, I had just gone to go get a ladder and came back to find it raining. The drone had slid into a gutter of rushing water. I went home the next day, and it booted up just fine. This just shows how durable DJI's products really are.
I’m glad the drone was ok, its funny how we get an attachment to them. But because your willing to take risks it shows us noobs ( or rather me ) what not to do. I’m still terrified to take my drone to far away, although I have only had an hour and a half fly time with mine so far. But I think tomorrow is the day to go out of my comfort zone. Anyway thank you for the video, I am so glad I found your channel. Keep up the good work and safe flying.
The problem with the Mini 3 Pro for shots through very tight gaps is that, while you can turn off the forward and rear obstacle systems, you CANNOT disable the underside system. This means, if you are passing through a small gap where you have less than around 1m between the bottom of your drone and some object/obstacle, the Mini 3 Pro will automatically ascend (even if you have Obstacle Avoidance disabled). While I'm not saying that this happened at the point that your drone hit the tree... it absolutely CAN and DOES happen (seen it happen with my own eyes). I will say this: if you look exactly 1 frame before your drone rolled over, you'll see the underside obstacle detection system did react to something. With the Mini 3 Pro, I would never recommend doing any shots passing through a gap where there is less than 1m of vertical clearance beneath the drone, or enough distance ABOVE the drone that it can pass safely through should the underside obstacle system detect something you may not be aware of (fine twigs, for example) Pull away shots like that are better done with a Cinewhoop drone (like the Avata, for example) where the drone won't automatically ascend when passing over an obstacle.

Gawd! You had my heart rate pumping through that crash and tree recovery! I've had to do two such tree recoveries of one of my self-build drones, aluminium frame tough as nails. Chucking petrified logs up at it got it down. But these little drones ... the thought of what happened to you terrifies me! Bravo with the recovery and the quick-thinking save. Glad you got it all operational again. "Entertaining" you say? Yeah, like a blooming horror movie! haha.
Wow! Your drone survived a pretty tough rock attack and high fall! You may have to be a little more conservative with your dronies and flying in tight spaces! I don't think obstacle avoidance would have helped with those small branches! Thanks for sharing.
Those obstacle sensors may well cause more problems than they solve, it no good if they work sometimes. That could cause a lot of confusion in the operator.
Those "pesky twigs." My thing is making sure I have my obstacle avoidance turned on. Glad you got the drone back in one piece AND WORKING!!! I started my outside drone flying with a Deerc d22 and crashed on my third flight. I've been flying for a combined 3 months so I got a mini 3 pro after i repaired th d22 and it's like night and day. I love flying the mini better!
This happened to me, but I got my drone stuck on a ledge of a ancient ruin. No way of getting up to the ledge. A telescopic window cleaning pole, black tape, strapped on wooden pole for extension, bungee on the end and a GoPro on live view i was able to hook the drone and lift it off. Unfortunately drone was damaged, but got my footage back! Nice vid, Mike
Yay! Glad you got yours back! I crashed my Mini 3 Pro into a tree (backwards, full speed) this past weekend and it dropped into deep, fluffy snow. Rushing over, I'm not sure if I accidentally stepped on it (couldn't see it in the snow), but the front right propeller arm was cracked, so I (just today) shipped it off to DJI for repair. At least I got a fantastic shot of my dog chasing the drone before it crashed
Watched this twice now and can't stop LOL! Double Denim too Darren!? Very funny :) I did the same too a couple of weeks ago FFS - Up about 80m circling a church and heard a plane nearby. I panicked, descended and landed on top of a 50 metre tree! I used 'Find my Drone' and could hear and see it - way, way up high. Tried the Fire Service and Tree Surgeons etc etc and I eventually had to call my partner (but before calling I had to send a pic of the tree and text her about the problem as I was just too embarrassed..) She came out to help and brought a ladder and long pole - to no avail, ladder was too small, but she was on a mission (By this time, I was beaten, just gave up, looking sheepish, almost on the phone to DJI) so she darted across the street, grabbed a builder who was just finishing for the day. This guy had a MASSIVE ladder and even though when he approached, I said "thank you but nah mate, its too dangerous", he proceeded to climb the tree and after an hour of climbing at least 50m up the tree, he said "I have it". Subsequently, he brought it down and handed it to me like he was handing me my lost kitten. Result was absolutely no damage to DJI Mini 3 Pro but lots of damage to me ego...
Just crashed mine Mini 3 Pro yesterday. Totally my mistake as well. I gues youtube knows what to reccomend :) 30 seconds after taking off, hit the branches, hit the car on the way down, broke off the hinge on the arm. The propellers kept turning as well, even the drone was upside-down, since it fell into snowy/muddy ground, the Sent it to DJI, hope the repairs will be affordable. Thank you for the video, I know I'm not alone :)
You were actually able to take the screws out for all of the props with the provided screwdriver? Mine essentially melted as I tried to take the screws out. I had to get a proper screwdriver that isn't made out of a soft metal.
If I am Active Tracking a moving object, for example a remote control sailboat as the POI, then what options are there to derive the speed and direction of that moving object, maybe using a post-process? The SRT file contains excellent lat and long data entries of the drone, but only a few camera settings that do not seem to be useful for that purpose, I don't see how to derive what direction and angle the center of the camera was focussed. Glad you were able to recover your drone and maintain good spirits about it. What are your thoughts about doing this shot while flying forward and reversing the footage in post?
An experienced drone pilot and you crashed twice in a short period of time. I feel for you yes, but now I don't feel so bad when I Lost mine and despite a challenging hike soon after to where I believed it crashed it simply wasn't there. This is a remote site in the Scottish Highlands where no one else visits due to its remoteness 😢
Nice examination of the experience and lessons learned. However, the first thing to come to my mind is that unless you need to have moving objects in your scene (people walking, birds flying, cars driving, waves crashing), the same pull-back effect can be achieved by flying forward (through the narrow opening that you can actually see now that you're flying forward) and then reversing the video. I would NEVER risk a crash by flying backward if my scene didn't need important moving objects in it. Obviously you cannot reverse a film clip with moving objects since these objects would then be moving backwards. But in your case there didn't appear to be any moving objects, so the backward flying risk seems to have been completely unnecessary. thoughts?
I enjoyed your video. I did the same thing with my mini three pro. It sat in a tree for over a month. Huge rain storms, wind storms. Finally a month later. Picked the drone up off the ground. The gimbal was broken, but everything else was fine. The battery was fine. I popped a new battery in the drone start it up and ran perfectly.
Glad you could recover your drone. I once dropped my controlled into a creek, after drying it off carefully I put it in a kilogram of rice, kept it inside rice 🌾 for 24 hours, it was dry and ready to go.
Many thanks for your honesty & analysis Again you've supplied excellent content...to be learnt from And yes we all push the boat....or drone out at times
Cool - and glad you got it back, safely. In hindsight, the snow probably ultimately saved it when falling. And, hats off to you for giving it a go: don't think I would have tried it with such a small gap. But on the flip side, if successful, it would have been epic! (and, you still got a niceYT story to tell 😏)
Definitely entertaining Darren. I was wondering why didn't you just fly forwards then reverse the video? I still think it was an impossible shot to get? I wasn't there to judge you, but definitely looked impossible to do from that distance? Thanks again for sharing Darren. I just want to ask you a question about that specific update you did? Is that an update for all drones, Or just the new Mini?👍👍👍 Thanks again my friend.
Great that you were able to recover it. Would it have worked to fly forward through the gap in the branches and then reverse the clip so it looks like a fly away rather a fly towards ?
Similar situation….the retrieval process involved a fly fishing pole with a small pine cone for the weight. Took a few casts to snag onto it… at that point a little pressure popped it loose and my teenager caught it, never touched the ground
I had to shoot my Phantom 4 out of a 70 foot tall tree with a rifle. There was one limb holding it up. I am sure you know that most backwards shots are just reverse footage. I currently have the Mini 3 Pro and the FPV. They are both a lot of fun. Thanks for the video and glad it worked out.
Great video as always! And yes I did learn something.... Don't fly through gaps without obstacle avoidance.😅 Hope you get your issue with it sorted out!
I crashed my mini 2 in a river. Managed to get it back but it was full of sand and water. Took it home, left it in the sun (didn't know what else to do). That afternoon when it was dry, I did a test flight and it worked. Absolutely crazy that even though it was fully underwater and covered in sand, everything worked well. Still sent it to dji to make sure everything was OK but the fact that it still flew is remarkable. These drones are very hardy.
Hi Darren, I`m glad your drone could be recovered and is fine! I commented on some of your videos prior to the Mini 3 Pro launch and watched all of them and then actually bought mine a few months back. But about a month after I got it, I tried teaching a friend how to fly a drone and the moment he got the controller, yanked the stick in the wrong direction, so it crashed into his two story high roof, about 6 meters up from where we were standing on the grass. With a swimming pool right where the drone would fall if it didn`t hook onto the rain diverter around the roof. I used two extended pool cleaning implements to pick it up, on tip toes, and only barely managed to unhook it and let it fall. My brother and friend`s wife stood on both sides of the pool with a spread out blanket and managed to catch it at the last instant. I was insanely lucky, the only damage was 3 props with chips, so the fly more kit accessories came in real handy! Anyways, still love your content and watch all your videos, thank you for your hard work!
Saying nothing, but I’m pleased you saves it, well done. At least this video shows you can at least save them after a crash. Don’t give up hope. Thanks again for such an entertaining video. I’m grounded for a few days as it’s very windy in the North East. Speak soon my friend
What a great video, Darren. Explaining in detail the problem and recovery of your drone. As most of us will know, the Mini3Pro has rearward facing crash sensors - but they're not as good as forward one. Take care! Sideways, even more probs! I wouldn't wish any more disastasters on you - but the videos you make of them are priceless! Well done.
i got my drone stuck up at the very top of a 40 meter high tree in the new forest a couple months back doing the exact same shot. was stuck up there for 4 days. paid a tree surgeon to climb in the end. luckily it's working all good!
Did the same with mine doing hyperlapse, did not adjust a circle it was to big and it landed on huge Christmas tree like, 7m above a ground. I called my friend he came to me with rope and 2.5kg weight plate,10 min later it landed on the ground, nothing happend to it. Those mini 3 pro's are pretty solid.
Hi I’ve been watching your videos and others for a couple of weeks now! Very informative… I’ve never flown a drone before! I don’t own one yet but having watched your video particular I narrowed my choice down to 2 drones but really it’s one.. The DJI Maveric 3 Pro! Yuup I know it’s for pro flyers but this is the one I want! Do you think this drone too tech heavy for a novice to get to grips with? Thanks Mr P
Yeah the mini 3 pro is tough! I was flying in the house testing the propeller guards and showing my kids how good and safe they are by purposely flying into the wardrobe wooden door at slow speed. Then all of the sudden, not sure what happened but it surged forward and slammed at full speed into the opposite wardrobe about 3m away! The front prop guards smashed off and the obstacle avoidance frog eyes left 2 circular indentations in the wood of the wardrobe door! The drone rebounded and then slammed on the ground upside down and powering itself off in the process. I thought it was the end of it as I turned it over the plastic casing behind the object avoidance frog eye had popped out. Front propeller had huge chucks out of them too. I popped plastic casing back in, changed the props and switch the drone on, hooray it worked still. Jeez it is a tough little drone.
This dude is the goat at drone reviews mostly people say lies about things to get them to subscribe to the channel but he is telling all the information and I feel bad for his drone I have a DGI mini three
Life is a learning curve and your honesty is helping others out but glad all has turned out well and your footage is amazing so keep up the good work matey
I am new to flying drones .. I have couple of questions, will be very thankful if you could help me .. 1) I will be flying out of country will the dji mini pro get GPS signal without a phone signal ( I have the controller) 2) if I track my car with the drone , and want the drone to land in the new place without phone signal , how will the drone locate the controller ( is there a. GPS in the controller ?) TIA..
I crashed mine in Tolleson Arizona but it was ok then I get to California and I got to film some beautiful greenery against mountains but the crash in Arizona came back to bite me and the right forward arm was broken and I wanted cry lol but I got it replaced at the same time I got my Mavic3 so I’m careful as all get out. Thanks for sharing your story
Whats the mechanics of the Gimbal? After being overloaded it works just fine. Are there not any parts that wear off? This is so fascinating to me. I am happy it survived. Keep up with the good content.
Great piece of equipment I have from my working days is a fiberglass telescoping stadia rod which as bailed me out from a similar crash where my drone was hung up maybe 6 meters above the ground. Not something you want to go out and buy, but if if you have one laying around, its great. I'm sure the experience wasn't amusing at the time but it has made for a pretty amusing video.
Tiny but mighty! I’ve had mine for a couple of months now and still get nervous every time I fly. Was it you who had mentioned there’s a process for adding the DJI care after the deadline? I don’t recall where I heard that. I tried emailing DJI support, but haven’t gotten a response.
Hi Darren, I’ve recently bought a mini 3 pro with the DJI RC but the account is bound to another user who I now cannot get in contact with. Obviously I can’t use the flyaway coverage so In the event that I crashed my drone, would I be able to buy a new one and fly with this RC I currently have or will this be bound to his account also? Thanks
Very nice recovery! Although an unfortunate accident for being an artist with your aerial photography, we all are learning to be better pilots from your experiences. Thank you for all you do for us, sir!
Im surprised it survived the rock, the fall, and the snow. But congrats on getting it back because it really sucks getting an expensive drone like that lost or broken.
Hope you guys enjoyed the story telling of this unfortunate event ☺ I'll be more careful with my drone flying

Glad you were able to recover your drone and maintain good spirits about it. What are your thoughts about doing this shot while flying forward and reversing the footage in post?
this is definitely the way I would've approached it. I'm way better at post-production than piloting backwards around tiny branches 😬
Let's try and look the result. Possibly, it's also great.
That was my first thought, hah
An experienced drone pilot and you crashed twice in a short period of time. I feel for you yes, but now I don't feel so bad when I Lost mine and despite a challenging hike soon after to where I believed it crashed it simply wasn't there. This is a remote site in the Scottish Highlands where no one else visits due to its remoteness 😢
Enjoyed this video as well as all your other ones. Thanks for all the great info, think I'm going to pickup your cheat sheets for the mini 2. Thanks!
Darren well saved, fantastic shot with the rock for sure 👏
Appreciate the great content on the Mini 3 Pro. Just purchased one and your videos have given me so much confidence, subscribed for the future!
Awesome, thank you!
Gled you got it back, might be worth creating a rescue kit to bring in a small bag
Many thanks for your honesty & analysis
Again you've supplied excellent content...to be learnt from
And yes we all push the boat....or drone out at times
Much appreciated
Survival scars! You will love that drone even more after this experience.
Is that an update for all drones, Or just the new Mini?👍👍👍
Thanks again my friend.
Haha...glad you recovered it!
Folks can learn more from sharing our errors than from all the successful flights. Thank you!
Great that you were able to recover it. Would it have worked to fly forward through the gap in the branches and then reverse the clip so it looks like a fly away rather a fly towards ?
I have done that before but cars and people will Also go backwards lol
Did you try going through the gap front ways first ? If not I think that might have helped 🙂
You are talented 🤣🤣👍🏻 I admire your rescue operation and I'm super stoked that you've got the drone back and it works ;)
thank you lol
I hope you have more luck!! Thanks for watching I appreciate it
Saying nothing, but I’m pleased you saves it, well done.
Thanks to God! Are you still thinking is the best firmware ever made for Mini3Pro Darren?
Did the same with mine doing hyperlapse, did not adjust a circle it was to big and it landed on huge Christmas tree like, 7m above a ground. I called my friend he came to me with rope and 2.5kg weight plate,10 min later it landed on the ground, nothing happend to it. Those mini 3 pro's are pretty solid.
Hi Darren, I was just wondering my friend is getting a Mavic 2, and he asked what is the latest on a drone licence does he need one?
Always good info from you videos, thank you again.
Thank you
I’m exhausted after watching that, the tension. Glad it all turned out ok for you Darren. 👍🏽
I’m off to practice my rock chucking. 😆
You can do it! It's all in the hips
Hi I’ve been watching your videos and others for a couple of weeks now! Very informative…
I’ve never flown a drone before!
Thanks
Mr P
Did the obstacle avoidance errors clear up?
This dude is the goat at drone reviews mostly people say lies about things to get them to subscribe to the channel but he is telling all the information and I feel bad for his drone I have a DGI mini three
Thank you
Don’t get crazy any more.. glad you got it back in one piece….😊
He who dares often loses..but when he wins, he champions!
she got a little battle scar but good thing you got it back.
Good throw. Was it a curveball, Knuckleball or a slider pitch? LOL
I'd had enough, it was a fastball with lots of swearing 😂
Just a thought! Why not do the pull away in reverse, then reverse the footage in post? Then you can see where your going!
Life is a learning curve and your honesty is helping others out but glad all has turned out well and your footage is amazing so keep up the good work matey
I am new to flying drones .. I have couple of questions, will be very thankful if you could help me ..
1) I will be flying out of country will the dji mini pro get GPS signal without a phone signal ( I have the controller)
2) if I track my car with the drone , and want the drone to land in the new place without phone signal , how will the drone locate the controller ( is there a. GPS in the controller ?)
TIA..
Come on man! 🤦♂ At least everything works fine! keep on flyin'
Always have an extendable fishing pole with you. Mine gives me a 7m reach.
Brilliant news. Well done matey.
OK no more crashing your drone. Good job
Can i ask some of your luts please...Ive been watching all your videos.
Wow great story😅. Maybe an Air pistole/shotgun will be helpful for the next tree parking🙃😉
imagine the title of that video 😂
I always take a 7' fishing rod and some heavy bullit weights (for bass fishing) to get the line over the branches and shake it out lol
Great recovery and video...👍
I must admit l do love that controller looks really cool.
To fix the obstacle avoidance try to recalibrate it in DJI assistant
Hi Darren, I’ve recently bought a mini 3 pro with the DJI RC but the account is bound to another user who I now cannot get in contact with. Obviously I can’t use the flyaway coverage so In the event that I crashed my drone, would I be able to buy a new one and fly with this RC I currently have or will this be bound to his account also?
Thanks
Well done from down under 👍🏻🇦🇺
Very nice recovery! Although an unfortunate accident for being an artist with your aerial photography, we all are learning to be better pilots from your experiences. Thank you for all you do for us, sir!
I recon the Avata is better for tight spaces and mini 3 for landscape shots?
very true
lol... I can totally relate... Not the Mini 3 pro part, but the rock throwing drone recovery method... hahaha Nicely done, man..
do I have rock throwing at drones competition ?
@@DMProductions hahaha. No you win man. Your prize was a mini 3 pro. Mine was a holy stone piece of crap!
I've heard of a small gap but that's tiny lol...Anyway Thanks for sharing bro
Im surprised it survived the rock, the fall, and the snow. But congrats on getting it back because it really sucks getting an expensive drone like that lost or broken.
