What is Sustainability?
Sustainable Development has been defined by the Brundtland Commission in its famous report called ‘Our Common Future’ also Brundtland Report in 1987 as “the development that fulfils the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”
To understand it in simple terms, Let's take one example, there is one very big magical pot in which every night 2 gold coins are deposited and it is up to the user the next day to take out coins to use for his or her daily expenses.
But, over the years, when the needs of that person are increased beyond 2 coins, now he takes out 3 coins each day.
During this process, slowly the stock of the coins in that magical pot decreases day by day and once the pot becomes empty, it cannot add even its 2 coins also and this diminishes the magical ability of that pot to deliver even a single coin.
In the above example, we can relate the magical pot to the nature, which provides all our basic necessities, such as, air, water, food and the climate that is necessary for our existence. But we are now extracting more than the capacity of nature to fulfil our needs and here comes the role of sustainability.
Etymological history of sustainability:
Sustainable and Sustainability both derive from Latin word sustin¯ere, which is combination of sub -means ‘up form below’ and ‘ten¯ere’- which means ‘to hold, maintain, support, sustain, or endure’.

Sir, how can basic science help in sustainable development?

Thanks for this question Santoshi. Science can help in identification of issues with accuracy if used in correct way. The scientific research is often useful to study the problem and provide the most appropriate solution.
But only science can not achieve sustainable development. We also need to have integration of ethics, behavior change, social factors, unintended consequences, etc.
