  • WE ARE THE TIME: Art Lives in the Age of Global Transition, this conference-festival took place between March 12 and March 16, 2012 at the Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam.
Gabriëlle Schleijpen, head of Studium Generale Rietveld Academie invited Aneta Szyłak, Grant Watson, Jorinde Seijdel and Alfredo Cramerotti to each inaugurate a discursive and performative program of one day.
    Thursday March 31: EXTREME MAKEOVER
Curator Jorinde Seijdel asked why radical forms of makeover are imagined and practiced so abundantly today. What kind of new 'forms of life' are produced? And how do these appear with art and artists? Miya Yoshida pointed at the amateur; Anneke Smelik at the ideal of the hairless body. Boris Groys expanded about the transformation of oneself into an image of universality, while Camiel van Winkel considered the white cube as the proper structure for a reinvention of the figure of the artist. Heath Bunting and his Identity Bureau challenged the idea of personhood all together.

I'm sure I heard what hilariously seems like a Freudian slip at 7:14 "to produce a Charlatan". It makes sense in the context though it's still rather funny considering Boris and his love of Kojève and so on, or actually that makes even more sense. Thas spuke zartharustranoid.

Very undynamic speaker, and it would be better if he had spoken in Russian, with closed captions in various languages. Is a text of his speech available anywhere? I wonder what he is adding to cultural and aesthetic theory--just can't tell from this presentation.

I thought he was very clear, he's criticizing a certain mode of resistance to capitalism that is too invested in this idea of flows and free spaces outside of control and so on.

Basically he's railing against sophistry, against argumentation based on similarity to the speaker rather than reason, and the vitalist idea that there is an "authentic" life that precedes reason, which would be a basis for this similarity (as in, for example, American liberal pluralism).
The best way to learn to understand a Russian accent is to try speaking in one yourself. It's fun.
