The Pebble and the Penguin is a 1995 animated musical comedy adventure film directed by Don Bluth and Gary Goldman. The film stars the voices of Martin Short, Jim Belushi, Tim Curry, and Annie Golden. Based on the true life mating rituals of the Adélie penguins in Antarctica, the film focuses on a timid, stuttering penguin named Hubie who tries to impress a beautiful penguin named Marina by giving her a pebble that fell from the sky and keep her from the clutches of an evil penguin named Drake who wants Marina for himself.

Doug: "Why do Penguins have hands?"
Me: "I dunno, why do they have _teeth?_ "
So Don Bluth can make ends meat.
Me: The better to grab and eat your soul with.
I can't help but wonder even further: Why do they have hands that look and function more like mittens than actual hands? In fact, why does that seem to happen in a lot of animated animal movies?
@@Aluhcav Don Bluth said that he and Goldman hate this film so much they wanted to remove their names from the credits. Don was unable to do so.
@@lukebragg8547 Don Bluth said that MGM interfered so much, that he and Gary Goldmen wanted their names removed from the credits. However Don can't do that.😔
Funny thing is: Male adelie penguins actually gather pebbles to impress the females. They then use them to build their nests. Some birds have really complex courtship rituals. And by the way, that seal is no mutant. It's a leopard seal. They're huge as hell and eat penguins.
Yes, and they can be even dangerous to humans (the leopard seal)

If I recall, Don Bluth himself hated the final product to the point he asked for his name to be removed from the credits.
Of _course_ he did. I've noticed that a lot on these reviews that involve "a bad Don Bluth movie". There's always "Oh, Don Bluth actually hated this movie!".
It doesn’t feel like it’s done, to paraphrase his Angry Birds review. The story is full of plot holes, unfinished animation, lots of useless stock characters...
Don Bluth is like George Lucas. He liked a Toll in Central Park but he also hated The Pebble and the Penguin. All the while George considered the Phantom Menance a masterpiece but at the same time he despised the Christmas Special.

I love this movie, one thing you can't deny about Bluth's movies is that they had heart and soul in addition to consistently great animation. Even if they were a little weird.
You think this movie got too many songs, wait until you see "Strange Magic". Every five minutes a song appears.
@Joshua Fischer Or Les Miserables
You are all going to hate me but
I enjoy Strange Magic as a big guilty pleasure!!!!
@@questworldiangreenknight7455 same, I love that movie!
At least there, they're beloved classic songs. Here, it's just the crap Mannilow couldn't find a place in Thumbelina. Probably. 😊
@@questworldiangreenknight7455 Strange Magic had its charm though. The fairies looked extremely uncanny but the dark forest actually had a really neat style with good CG to match with it. Also I really liked how they didn't use the "looks dont matter but ugly love interest dude magically becomes a handsome guy in the end cause we ain't believing this s**t either" cliché. Overall if they opted for an original soundtrack instead of making a boombox musical, it could've even been a bizzare but memorable classic like Rango (which was awesome btw, prob my favourite western movie alltogether)
AH! PENGUINS WITH TEETH! MAKE IT STOP!
They wear clothes too. Its not a big deal that they have teeth.
"Blah, blah, blah,cTim Curry is evil." Love that joke.

Someone wrote "marry the mole"? I thought it was just the voice actress of the mouse getting drunk before a scene and trolling it, without realising it would be in the final product.
Lmao yes
Why the fuck do these penguins have teeth!?
Oh, good. I'm NOT the only one unnerved by that!

This is a very question that I am actually a little disturbed by possible answers.

Did anyone else notice how RAPEY that "don't make me laugh" song is?

So yeah. Rapey.
Well, he is the bad guy, so can you blame him? Never noticed that till now
My childhood is ruined, again
Fun bit of trivia: that song almost earned the film a PG rating.
That's actually a leopard seal and they are pretty big...
Yeah but as the NC said, the penguins are regular sized compared to humans. If you compared the seal to the humans then it'd look like a teenaged Megalodon.

*cough* why is Anastasia on the bad list? *cough*
seriously, i really want NC to review Anastasia and explain his point, who is with me?
rafa polonio me
Keep in mind when he showed Anastasia, he showed it while saying 'For every good film'. I'm pretty sure he wasn't insinuating it was a bad film.
keepcalmncarryon97 Because it’s an awkwardly-animated Disney knock-off with irritating characters and a disjointed plot held together with nothing more than coincidence and a few decent song.
rafa polonio same , along with all dogs go to heaven, land before time and Thumbelina...
Oh and Titian A.E .... well that last one I didn’t enjoy
I loveeeed this movie as a kid. It has such a fun soundtrack, you can't deny it. Plus it's not often we get main characters with speech impediments or disabilities. Hubey has a speech impediment, and probably anxiety too, but he's not considered weird because of it. It's not really mentioned, either if I remember. His stutter is just portrayed as a normal part of him, and I think that's pretty wonderful for such an old kids movie.
(And Rock a Doodle is fucked up, but SO hilariously quotable, ok? I love that freak movie)
Rock a Doodle is what happens when high people get to write movies XD
Tim Curry's voice was just perfect for the villain, he already made Hexxus and he was GORGEOUS with all the uppercase letters because his voice is just perfect for an evil guy

The main penguin is kinda ugly and the theme song is definitely annoying.

That "mutant seal" is NOT a seal it is a sea leopard. They prey on penguins and can grow up to 11.5 ft in length.
What is it with NC and misidentifying leopards?
Magnus Høier Holck Well he confuses animals a lot of times.
... sea leopards are a type of seal.
The leopard seal, also referred to as the *_sea leopard_* , is the second largest species of seal in the Antarctic.
Dude, it's basically the same fuckin' thing, that's why.
He even called the leopard in Disney's Tarzan a cheetah in his Disneycember review!
Maybe he didn’t know what it is
I love how the preview image of this video are the Penguins of Madagascar helping Critic beat up the main character of this movie.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
My grandparents used to have this on VHS. My 8 year old former self even thought this was "meh".
Ditto. Even though there was a very small part of me that kinda liked the idea behind it.
Same here. I watched it at my grandparents place one Thanksgiving; and it was so strange that I thought I hallucinated it (until I found this review a while ago).
I remember watching this. I knew different people in entertainment by nicknames related to their work, such as calling Nathan Lane "The Timon Guy" or James Arnold Taylor (The voice of Obi-Wan) "The other Obi-Wan guy". At the time (I constantly switched names for Don Bluth, never sticking with just one), I read in the credits "The Secret of Nimh guy made this", and with how bad the movie was (I knew it was bad and hated it at age eight), I felt genuinely offended.

Did I miss something crucial while watching Anastasia? Why is it in the bad part of the list? It's pretty solid imo. Beautiful music, pretty animation, good and engaging story. The characters are fine, Anastasia being a girl full of wonder in the beginning to then grow up, and even defeating the bad guy. I can think of one song that has NOTHING to do with the movie, but the rest is wonderful, with often good and sometimes useful plot-details. I could go on and on about why it's good, but what is so bad about it? Somebody please explain.
Miss Sery You are not alone, been a while since I saw it but i still listen to "dark of the night"
Me too, love to just put on the whole soundtrack sometimes and bathe in nostalgia and eargasm
Miss Sery oooh I member ( south park reference)

I really like the melodies of the songs in this movie, but the lyrics make me cringe every time.
Also, penguins with hands may be distracting, but I think the teeth distract me even more.
Oh, and how they modeled the female penguins with skinny waists and pronounced chests and thighs to make them look more like human women, because apparently Don Bluth beats off to penguins like Dan Schneider beats off to feet.
IT'S. A. KIDS. MOVIE!
Let the kids fucking dream without comments!
Yeah, it's not like they're animated in any way but hey, I guess talking objects in Beauty and the Beast is an abomination too. 😂
@@codybgamin That's how athropomorphising works for companies, sadly. The male animal looks like a normal animal but with a human "translated voice", and then... there's the female animal with human hear, thin waist, long legs, lipstick, eyeshadow, big chest and a pink bow/flower. :(

I know this is a 7 year old comment but why did you say Jim Curry instead of TIM Curry? We’re you thinking of Jim CARREY?
Ya I thot he was real great when he was that transvestite scientist in that one movie with the meatloaf man.
Not the best Don Bluth film, but at same time not the worst. A "Meh" kinda movie in my opinion.
Well that was uncalled for.
So.... I guess stacked against something like "Cock-A-Doodle-Doo", the movie isn't a complete flop otherwise?
One thing I could easily identity with NC over: "Look How We Get Along Together" is one of those songs that makes me cringe so hard I feel like I should be put in a straightjacket in a nice soft room away from all possible sharp instruments to keep me from committing suicide.
I think the worst would be tied between A Troll in Central Park and Thumbelina. At least this penguin actually made an effort to get this pebble for the girl penguin. Thumbelina spent the entire film fainting and whining that life was impossible before she accidentally got her man. And a Troll in Central Park was just shit. This one is definitely the third worst of his movies though....the best being Secret of Nimh, the Land Before Time and All Dogs Go to Heaven.....only because the mouse's parents are blind as a bat when it comes to finding their kid. lol
I... I liked Anastasia.
Grinning Marionette Same! One of my favorites.😓

Grinning Marionette Exactly, that movie gets way to much hate. I even like it better than some main stream Disney movies. Glad to see I am not alone!

"Pebble and the Penguin" was one of my favorite childhood movies when I was a 5 year old kid back in 1995 or 1996, and I still watch it every once in a while to relive my childhood memories. As a kid, I also called the pebble a stone as well, and I still call it a stone to this very day to also relieve my childhood. LOL
Credit where it's due, I get the impression that the actors voicing the characters put quite a bit of effort into their roles. Jim Baluchi and Tim Curry seem to have especially taken to their parts. Good on them :)

Why is Anastasia in the bad section? I love that movie
just because you like something, that doesn't automatically make it good, it just means that you like the film
I think it's because Anastasia was practically a Disney princess ripoff. This isn't my opinion, (I've never even seen it before) thats just my observation from what Critic has said
I love it too
Anastasia WAS good, but it was:
A. Basically copying everything Disney does.
and
B. A 'Historical' story that is really, really bad at history.
Neither of which actually has any effect on its inherent quality as the animated musical it is, but both of which prompt people to hate on it.
i found it enjoyable too, and it got 2 amazing songs in it :p

this movie is ironic given that adelie penguins are the least faithful partners in the animal kingdom. they will literally cheat on their mate with a hole in the ground, to completion.

I don't know which I love more your old review or your new ones. I love the witty lines and cut away jokes of the old review and the visual and skit humor of your new review. I try to do a bit of both to see which one fits better so far it has been the witty jokes and cut aways because my acting ability is still getting work done. I think that out of all his shitty movies he made in the 90's this one is probably the best one as it's not to insulting of intelligence and also got people interested in penguin movies again so we could get happy feet and stuff and it has Tim Curry as a villain how can you go wrong with that. Well I guess Tim was taking any role he could where he can be an over the top villain so he could have done this role in his sleep hell I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't even told he was a penguin. Yeah man I love Tim curry but it seems like he was milking the villain role for quite some time. Don't get me wrong I love his villain roles but I think he got type cast as them and his job opportunities lessened. Also love your channel idea totally subbing keep it up.
Don Bluth is a god and I really hope that that dragon slayer game movie comes out that would be so awesome cause that will probably be his last work before he sadly passes away. I hope he won't for a while though
I think that the witty humor and cut aways are more of consistent streak of humor as they are simple but hilarious and if you aren't fully invested in the skits or they just aren't written well then they will fall flat and make you dislike a large portion of the episode because of the failed joke.
Yeah I agree with that Maximilian. That's why I'm staying mostly with the safe choice of cut aways and stuff but if I have a genuinely funny idea for a skit humor I will try it and they are usually short so if they are bad you only hate it for a brief time period.

I thought "Anastasia" was a pretty good movie, even if it wasn't historically accurate.
From what I hear, Russia loves it.

Fun fact: Don Bluth says that this was his worst movie. He hated it so much that he refused to be credited for this movie
I thought he hated "Troll In Central Park" more. I definitely believe he hated "Pebble" but I do think "Troll" was just as bad of an experience.

Truly the scariest thing this October.
Why is that the older NC videos are allot funnier, then the new ones?
Asylum117 He was trying harder back in the day.
Asylum117 i dunno, I kinda like both the same.
Asylum117 no sketches
Didn't do stupid ass sketches.
Its because back here, he didn't analyze nealy his much. He was more focused on comedy than criticizing. As such rather than pointing out why something does not work, he just says "That's not good. That's lame. That's silly. Hoo hoo hah hah."
As such his new reviews have more analytical stuff but less humor. Which is a fair trade off.
"Your modern life is no longer in reruns."
God, that cracked me up.
I used to love this movie. I watched it when I was home sick with an allergic reaction and a bad fever, so it made a lot of sense to me.
16:21 They do know that penguins live in the South Pole while Santa lives up north; right?
“You wanna bonk a seagull?”
😂😂😂😆😆😆🤣🤣🤣
I watched that film many, many times when I was a child... and I don't remember ANY of the songs. This must be the most forgettable soundtrack of a children's film ever.
Ilea Learn Eco And yet three of them are going through my head right now. 😂
I saw this many times as a kid. God I got sick of it!!!! My older sister loved this movie for some reason
6:48 Has anyone noticed an animation error there? The background should be at least going closer to give the illusion of the camera going closer to the pebble. Because it is still, it looks more like Hubie is growing in size. XD
Fun fact: the studio interfered with the film and changed so much things against the wishes of Don Bluth, as well as Gary Goldman, that the two demanded their names be taken off the film.
Kind of ironic that Bluth would want his name removed from this but NOT "A Troll in Central Park" which depending on who you ask is even worse.
Drake’s torso looks like a lightbulb 💡
9:26 Jasper and Lapis fusion scene from Steven Universe in nutshell
Haha nice
Are you kidding me?... Titan AE is a good movie... Come on.
Finally! Someone besides me who actually thinks Titian AE is a good movie!
Andrei It is.
Sham Wow Guy well, yes. But if you meant it as a reason why that movie is bad, you should know that Star Wars can be explained as "that movie that has dog creature as co-pilot".
Andrei Or, "That movie with Jar Jar".
Andrei and TimeTravelPony
It took me THIS long to remember the name of that movie, thank you for the reminder. But yeah, it is a good movie.
Loved this movie as a kid! And, I'll admit, when I want to get my nostalgia on I still watch it!!
Honestly this was one of my favorite movies to watch after school in elementary. My moms classroom had a very limited selection. Serendipity takes the cake for my all time favorite though.
This one wasn't Don's fault. This is producers changing things constantly, while not increasing the budget or extending the time frame. That's why some of the movie had to be outsourced to another studio to animate, making some of the animation really bad, ie some characters not moving at all while others are, or not animating the bottom half of their bodies, so you see blank space where the body was cut off.
The producers destroyed it so badly, Don Bluth demanded they take his name off it.
The main character's face creeps me out. I keep expecting him to turn out to be evil or something. It's too cutesy.
Doug's older reviews are superior to the crud he puts out today. Also, I love-love-love this video's thumbnail!
Actually, leopard seals can get up to like 12 feet long. So that seal was pretty accurate to size.
12 feet oh my god
Wouldn't that be the size of a bus? Oh my god.
@@melteddarkchocolate000 Actually no, 12 feet is about 3 meters.
Who's here after Doug finally reviewed Happy Feet? I am. Honestly I like all penguin animated movies-
The Pebble and the Penguin
Madagascar trilogy
The Penguins of Madagascar
Happy Feet
Surf's Up
I hope Doug reviews Surf's Up one day.
16:26 It's about as Christmas as Freddy vs. Jason playing red light, green light.
