It cracks me up how she says "washroom."
Ofc it does cus it’s a Canadian thing.
This is great advice. I'm a first time dog owner and we created a potty area in our yard with pea gravel and also temporarily added wood pellets ( that's what the breeder)used and we have successfully taught our pup to do his business on command. This also saves our hard from stains and makes everything more streamlined and organized
How's your progress going now?
@@a.m.a9332 thanks for asking because that's our current problem. Hes fully potty trained but once he turned 6 months he refused to go to the potty spot he happily went to. He now has been marking and pooping around the fence on our property. We are trying to get him back to his stop but he pulls back as when we lead him there. We always wash it down. There have been a few times he did potty there in the past few weeks himself but he's keen on marking the fence ughh
My lab's word is hurry but that was completely accidental my brother used to tell him to hurry because it was cold and he wanted to go back inside now if you say hurry in any context he pees wherever he is and it's rather annoying but good advice I used this tatic with a different word for my newest puppy and it worked very well
Can you please not get caught up in the “washroom” dilemma? Get over it. This woman shared FREE solid advice that we’ll all benefit from in some way so maybe a thank you would be nice! 🙏 thank you!!
Completely agreed!
It makes no sense to call it a “washroom” is a distraction it effective communication.
@@davebuskirk1758it’s just how they say it in Canada. It doesn’t take a degree to know what she was referring to
super helpful going to try to train my puppy in this manner. i hope it works. he sniffs around and walks for 35 minutes before he maybe goes. Having him go on command would be AMAZING.
Thank you so much! I have a service dog in training. She is housebroken but i dont want her going potty just anywhere outside. This really helped. Thank you
Thank you!
We teach the guide dog puppies this. It's so nice and I plan to do this with my personal dogs too
You helps so much!!!!!!
I just did it ❤ thank you so much
Love your videos! So straightforward. I am using them to get back to basics with my 7 month old terrier mix. But how do I combine the loose leash training with allowing her to do her business?
Do YOU have an unusual place that you need to take your dog to pee? Is it difficult to get them to go pee or poop there?
Yes. You discussed this but didn't say how to do it. My dog will pee poo only in our yard. He will not go anywhere else. He will hold both for hours even when hiking and going around town not to go elsewhere. He is a 5month old GSD.
Eventually I'm gonna try to teach them to use the toilet.
Thanks!
Thank you so much!!!!
Great advice and great channel! We had a German Pointer, went with it to the "dog school" and had a great time (although those dogs don't have lot's of 'will to please', it was a great dog.
Don't underestimate your German Shorthaired Pointer Wim! We have a trainer on staff whose GSP has been a national champion of dog agility! Glad you enjoy our videos, we love your channel too!
This is a skill that any service dog has to learn
This is useful for service dog training
It works. I made my chihuahua pee on command. She only peed on grass, I used to command, "go make pee pee". Surprisingly, she learned English words really quickly. She's actually bilingual English and Russian.
Glad to hear you found the video helpful, givememore4free! That’s pretty cool that your pup knows some english and Russian commands! Thanks for watching! ~Ken
Teaching my rescue to go on command currently. Thanks for the tip on not saying anything untill hey start at 1st. He knows what "Nudo" means seems but not going on command. Its for sure my fault, thinking its from saying it to much and distracting him. Now that i have this new tip he should out it together.
I'm so happy I found your channel. I have an 18 month old border collie, who i'm trying to keep entertained.
I am struggling with is him pulling on lead and he's also reactive. He's not aggressive in any way, it's purely frustration when he's on lead. I don't trust him off lead in busy areas yet, as he runs to other dogs and people etc. Do you have any upcoming videos on leash pulling at all?
+EssieGirl85 So glad you are enjoying our videos! We don't have any videos planned specific to leash pulling at this point. It is in your best interest to contact a trainer or qualified behaviorist to help you and your border collie work through the leash reactive behaviors. It isn't uncommon for a dog to be more reactive on leash, as they feel more restrained. Whether it is benign in nature or something worthy of a little more concern, it should be addressed. We would deal with this on a case by case basis, as we will always cater our teaching to the specific needs of each dog for their unwanted behavior.
We have written an article on our blog that speaks specifically about on leash reactivity. Here is the link: mccanndogs.com/blog/154-why-you-should-not-allow-dogs-to-greet-on-leash Thanks for subscribing! Happy training!!
Thank you for taking the time to reply. I will book a behaviourist :)
The washroom. 🤣
I've tried and tried and for an entire month my 5 year old shihtzu will do great, but now it's cold and now she's wanting a 2 mile walk when I have lupus and crippling arthritis and she's refusing when she did it the last 2 days in the yard. I know her look as soon as I ask her to and she's decided to take a stand. She will stop, look at me w defiance and hold it refusing to go unless I walk her. Today I'm in a lupus flare and she's refusing, so she's currently in her kennel. It's become so frustrating I've contemplated finding her a new home. We rescued her to be a companion for me when I'm sick, and it's made things much much harder. I'm at my wits end.
Thank you much for this video. I really really need to teach my puppy to use litter box in my bathroom. I am sick and i can not take my puppy out too many times as i am tired. This command to puppy to go potty is so important for me. How can i make my puppy to potty in litter box by herself? How ca i teach her to go to bathroom and go in the litterbox to her business?
Hi this is very interesting! I do plan on teaching my future puppy how to potty on command and will be using a very similar method of associating the cue with the act of eliminating. My question is...I need to teach it to potty on command on different surfaces as well as indoor and out. Just like you probably had to do when traveling (inside an airport/ inside a washroom) or on pee pads. Will this method work to generalize surfaces as well as indoor/ outdoor? Some trainers believe you should choose either in or out but i will sort of need to be able to teach both, however it will be doing it outdoors most of the time. I'm just thinking of those times when I'm indoors or in a plane for ling distances where it may need to potty on a pad. How will I be able to do that? Is it as simple as treating it like an other behavior that needs to be generalized in different locations? Or will the substrate become an issue here?
Curtsy (to the queen) is my word to go pee. My dogs have long feathering on their legs so when they assume the position it looks like a curtsy.
Hi McCann Dogs, I was successful with this training for my puppy he would go so quickly on command - but when he reached about 8-9 months and started to mark his territory, he completely regressed. Never goes on command now and just ignores the cue. I’m almost sure he’s holding it in for the next walk! Any advice? Thank you from Aus 🇦🇺
This works easily. Did it for 2 puppies and it’s brilliant for road trips. I just say ‘pee’ and ‘poo’
How do you train an older dog to do this?
Need a trick for puppy school and this will do perfectly
What do you guys think about litter training small breeds?
Hello!!!! I need help on another issue! I just adopted a baby Pyrenees. We are in isolation due to covid. Last time we had a pyr he became overly protective of the home. Im a similar situation... I was very sick with e coli... We don't have covid... Only precautions.. Do you hace any tips on socializing them when you can't socialise him? Gracias!
Thx for the information cuzmy puppy soooo hart to go to potty
So how do you train a senior adopted dog - not a puppy - to go on leash and on command? Same methods?
How long do you crate your puppy?
Does this stuff work for 4 year old rescue dogs, too?
Would you recommend saying a command word that they are already familiar with? We were using "potty" when training her on the pad, but now we're making the transition to potty outside and I'm using the same word. Please advise, thank you.
Hi,
We are from Sydney, and we adopted an adorable staffy cross corgi puppy from an animal shelter around 2 months back, in Aug 2020, when he was 6 months old.
He has learnt to do potty/pee outside the house, in the front yard, but won't do it anywhere else.
This becomes a major problem when we sometimes go out on weekends, and he holds his poo/poop for almost 12 hours!!
Our front yard had artificial turf, so we tried to encourage him to pee/poop near the garden bed, which has natural turf, but he won't do his business there either.
Please help.
Thanks a lot in advance.
I hope it works!
Do you teach dog classes
Question
Um what if I go to school, would my puppy be able to wait till I get home to potty outside?
I have had to block my gerden off due to the weather, as my grass is now just wet mud. However my GS male dog will open go for a wee on there and i have to lift him on to it to go but this i can not always do. My other to GS and pug are fine. So how do i retrain my GS to wee on the concrete before the grass / now mud. Please can you help in this matter. He is almost a year old now.
My 3yr old Labrador only pees and potty when I take him outside ,but my problem is it will take me about 25mins to complete a walk.and I have to take him 4 times a day ,it is getting hard for me t take him.(I want to if I can teach my dog to completely peee out whatever he's got at once.if this is possible then please let me know it!) Thank you
(Great channel!!) We chose a command for poop and pee and have been using them consistently while our puppy is eliminating. It's been nearly 3 months (6 month old rescue puppy.) We started trying to say the commands just before when we knew it was going to happen (with praise just after) about a month ago. In the past couple weeks, we've tried a few times (only about 1/2 dozen so we don't water down the command if it doesn't work) to give her the command when we knew she needed to go and it did not work. (We were at home, but she is such a sniffer... smells are her favorite thing.) I had heard in a puppy kindergarten that it was possible to train your dog to go on command, and I assumed it might take a few weeks for each step to really solidify it. I was very surprised that you were using a much shorter time-frame. Any idea as to what I could do better?
Hi there! It can take some dogs a little longer to really understand the skill. Try practicing first thing in the morning, when your puppy goes out for the first time. You will stack the odds in your favor that your puppy has to go. This way you can capture the behavior, or start to test the command with the knowledge that your puppy is likely to be more successful! Happy Training! ~Ken
@@McCannDogs Ok, thank you! (And thanks for such a quick response!)
Washroom. Lol. Good video, though. Thanks.
I thought it was maybe an American thing, never heard anyone say washroom instead if bathroom 😂
She should not use the word washroom or bathroom. Animals don't go in that room to P or poop..I forgot that she was the one who tells the dogs to go there. I stopped watching her because of that it's frustrating
My ex said this all the time and most others I know from Chicago
washroom in Texas is when you keep your washing machine and dryer
Must be a Canadian thing, eh!?
My dog is 6 months and havung a hard time with potty training. She knows where she is suposed to go but prefers to pee other places in the house. I have tried only alouing her in rhe livingroom for two weeks, but the moment she is aloud any where elts in the house she will pee. What can i do?
My dog taught himself “go poop” I think it’s because he’s so anxious and desperate for constant attention lol and he only knows what poop means cause he used to get so nervous he’d poop himself and I’d ask him if he did it 😂
Now I’m gonna teach him go pee
1st time I've heard don't reward with treats. I would rather not give treats incase I run out.
Just a heads up a video with the same title by the online dog trainer Review has totally plagiarised the script of your video
I recently moved and my dog has yet to poop or pee outside the apartment. He is an anxious dog so I’m sure it’s because of the new environments, but it’s becoming troublesome. He will hold it for so long he will go on himself in the car or inside the house (his legs shake!!). I’m not sure what else to do to make him go outside :(. He’s less than two years old so I didn’t think it should be a problem, but he literally will only go by command in the backyard of my old house. Please help!!
all ready taught several of my dogs through out the year to go poop on command. and I hold the dog in place and if they move I back them up. Dogs are only as smart as the trainer.. Good job. My word of command is Poop poop and by the third poop it does. Fascinating.
I have a question...If they learn to go "potty" on command, then how does that affect them if they are just outside hanging around and need to go "potty", will they still understand that they can go on their own or do they just wait until you decide that they can go "potty"?
I guess as long as you arent correcting them for toileting before the command is spoken, they won't feel any reason to avoid the behaviour otherwise.
I trained mines to go to pads inside, now that weather is better, i need to train them to go outside. Now, if i take them outside they won't do anything, they wait until they come back inside. How do i retrain them?
Me and my fiance just got a new 4 month old puppy 3 days ago he's he's used to going outside through a dog door to a back yard but unfortunately we don't have one so it turns out that he's not used to going on a leash can you maybe help me
I love your videos. They are so helpful. We recently adopted a dog from animal welfare. She is a border collie mix. We have been using all your potty training tips and Winnie (our puppy) is doing pretty well. The other day she was eating in her crate and urinated after she was done. We have the crate partitioned off so she only has the recommended amount of room. The puppy attempted to get away from her urine but couldn't. We don't have any bedding or toys in the crate. She was in there with just her food. Winnie will have an accident like this at times. She was taken out about thirty minutes prior to having her eat in the crate. We were playing one time and she just stopped and urinated about two feet from me. She had just been out. It doesn't happen often but it does happen about once a day. Any thoughts? I wish I lived closer to your school. I would come and bring Winnie. Thanks for all the great videos!
Hi there, Jen Lyn! Puppies will have accidents sometimes. And it sounds like you're making lots of good training choices to help your puppy to be successful! What's really important is to know what to do when they make a mistake. Thank you for your input! Your videos are great.
Hi I got a quick question,,,I.m training my 4 month puppy yorkie terrier to go out side ok I bring her to the same spot and she gose I reward her after wen she gose ,,,,now is all working fine ,,,,wen I let her play for 20 mins she go take a drink of water and pee on the floor,,, now I no that's my fault for leaving her out of my site for that 20mins while I.m doing others things ,,,,,would it be best to leash her onto my waste ,,,so I can have her near me at all time so she won't make that mistake
Do you use the same word whether it's a wee or a poop? Or should I use different words for each?
Good question!
Same word for each, they will do what they have to
“Make snakes”
This is a very neat and great trick, but I have a 1 year old shih tzu and I have started to train her recently. Whenever she is about to go potty I say "go potty", It worked great for the first few times, she went and I rewarded her with a treat. After a while she started to think that the statement "go potty" meant she could get a treat so when she is about to go potty I say "go potty" but instead of going potty she stops what she is doing and looks up at me expecting a treat. I wonder what I did wrong....

I adopted a golden retriever 3 days ago and he will sniff for 30 minutes and still not go. He is about 1 years old. Would this still work for him?
If m’y dog isnt a puppy, but a year old, is it too late to teach him?
Unrelated to the video but when it comes to playing tug of war do you let the dog win?
Although it’s unrelated, it’s a really good question, Majestic Dragon! There should be a balance of letting your dog win, and asking them to “out”. It’s fairly dependent on the dog’s desire to play. I actually have a video that talks about it in more detail. Here is a link: Dog Tug Game - How To Play Tug Of War With Your Dog - ruclips.net/video/q2Ln7fMUVE8/видео.html

@@McCannDogs thank you for replying. I have recently just gotten a puppy. She's the first dog that I've had that seems like she would like to play tug. I've been searching for answers everywhere. Some people I've spoken with say that playing tug will make a dog aggressive. So I've been holding off on playing until I know exactly the best way to play.
That’s a pretty common myth about playing tug. You’ll see that it’s actually a great way to teach your dog that you’re lots of fun to engage with. If you’re having trouble with the “drop it” part of the game you can use this video to help your dog to understand to let go when you ask: ruclips.net/video/NiSxXUZILHw/видео.html

My puppy used to go to pee in the bathroom where we put the pad, suddenly he stops, he will hold it all day, what should I do
How can we be sure that there's one in the chamber?
My puppy will only poop in my garden or the house 😒 she's been doing really good with potty training overall but pooping has been a struggle. Any advice for changing where they poop?
Hey Britt, thanks for watching and commenting. This video explained it pretty thoroughly. Keeping your dog on a leash and picking that spot will be crucial to controlling where your dog is pooping.

Thank you for this advice, I subscribed to your channel. We have an English Bulldog. He is 4 months old. He has been part of our family for 1 week now. He is trained, and knows how to go to the washroom outside. However, several times now he has also relieved himself inside. We have tile floors throughout our house, so its not a catastrophe when it happens, but I really don't like it, and I want to get him to the point where he doesn't exhibit this behavior. I am going to ask my spouse to contact the guy who sold him to us and find out what words he uses, and techniques. But I was just wondering if you have any advice for what to do when the puppy pees inside? Is it considered ok to put their nose in it? I was always taught that years ago when I had another pup. But in thinking about it, seems a bit cruel, maybe I am getting soft in my old age. Thanks again for your video feed.
Hi there, Paul! Potty training can be a pretty dynamic process and accidents will happen. I have been trying to get my dog to pee on the patio (so she can "go"when I'm not home). She will not do it. I have been taking her out for walks and giving her the command "do your business." She will go multiple times during the walk. But, when I take her to the patio, she won't go. I've also tried to get her to go closer to my apartment when we go out, but she will just sit. As soon as I take her down the street and give her the command, she will go. What am I doing wrong?
It can be tough for a dog to go on a hard surface, especially if it's concrete and even more so if it has been used as living space. Sometimes owners need to use something as a transition to "doing their business" when it's a challenging surface. Pee pads is an option, or a piece of artificial grass or turf can help the dog feel more comfortable going in an uncomfortable spot. It's important to not ask for the behavior by using a command if it's not working already. It can be counterproductive if the dog won't do as you're asking and they learn they don't need to listen to the specific command. The next time you're out for a walk in a spot you know your dog is going to pee, let them begin to go then praise them with "good do your business" or just " do your business". With a few repetitions, the word will become associated with the behavior. Next, go to that spot where you're consistently having success and tell your dog "do your business". When they go, praise them for listening so well! Once you're successful there, try to get a little closer to home. Don't go all the way to their favorite spot and ask for that same behavior. If they've gotta go, they've gotta go so you will be successful. Just be sure you're not asking for a behavior that your dog doesn't have to listen to. So set them up to be successful by allowing them to go, then capture the behavior with your command!
I did not rais the question but this is soooo helpful explanation for me as well. I am trying to teach my puppy to go to my bathroom where i have a litter box for my puppy. She does her business there when i am with her but she will not go to bathroom on her own. I need to find the way to teach her to go when i am can not accompany her. HELP!
Can this be taught to an adult dog(11-13yearls old)? I received my adult dog back after a year of living with his dad (My ex-husband), back in June. It has been difficult. He has been acting up and releasing in the house. I watched this video last weekend and starting Monday I've been taking my dog to the same grass square with a short leash, I haven't started using the verbal commands with him yet. He released there a few times but mostly sniffs and pulls on the leash. So when he does that I bring him back inside. If I see that he peed/Pooped well I then take him on a long nice walk. I don't know what to do because yesterday and today he has been belligerently just holding it. He refuses to go !! I am so desperate. I don't know what to do !
Argh! Bummer
Any issues with using "Hurry Up" out of context of going to the washroom, and then the dog follows the command accidentally?
How can I ween our puppy off of pee pads? She is yet to potty outside, even after 1+ hours walks.
Hi there, Anthony! Weaning off of puppy pads can be challenging. Moving the pad closer and closer to the door, until you can move it outside the door is a common training technique. There is a faster way that will also help your dog to understand that they need to let you know they need to go out though. Here is a link to that training video. Be sure to start this exercise at the beginning of the day with your puppy. So that you know they NEED to go! my dog is a year old is that too old to start
Are there dogs out there that have been taught how to teach puppies to poo / pee outside that you know of?
Is it too late to train a dog who is already an adult?
I adopted a 4 y/o that only poops at the nearby dog park (a few blocks away) when we have perfectly beautiful grassed area next to our apartment. I want to teach him to go there also, but he will hold it if we dont go to the dog park and then poop inside the house. So far, we have decided to keep on trying, and keep him in his crate to avoid accidents and taking him every 2hrs. Any help? He seems DETERMINED to not poop anywhere other than the dog park!
We thought it was a leash thing, so we got a super long one and he has pooped at the dog park with a leash, but not outside of it.
If you get help please tell me what worked
@@christineelizabethhorner5829 hi! Turns out he needs to walk a bit to get things moving. So we just found a shortish route and walk him to get him to poop. He only poops right away if he needs to go immediately. Otherwise, he needs a bit of a walk (10mins)
I would like to see why my dog keeps doin poop and pee in side the house
My 6 mo old "border doodle" is great about not going inside, and we have consistently paired "go potty" with the action, but it doesn't have the desired effect. If he poops, then many times, he refuses to pee, even to empty what's there (our desire). He's way more interested in sniffing and looking around, not finishing his business. Which means we'll be going back outside 30 minutes later. Do you train BOTH pee and poop, to make sure they do both?
My dog is over two.. a rehome.. will not pee in the small fenced area... I can wait for two hours.. and he won't go .. losing patience.... been three months since we have had him.. we had another little dog.. deceased now.. so he has nothing to pee over.. ignoring me.. will sit there.. will not listen to me..
This could be used for such nefarious purposes. XD
What washroom
Chris Allen it mean like to go potty or go to the bathroom which is outside I think
Whenever I put my puppies in the bathroom they just start to lick the water on the floor.
Is it normal if my 10 month old German shepherd knows that he has to go out but he does it on the way to the door. What do I do because I am losing my mind.
He usually sits at the door if he has to go but after eating he can only hold it for like 3-5 minuites max and there is a lot of snow so I have to put my boots on and a jacket one so it takes me a bit longer to take him out in winter
I have a chocolate labrador that only likes to do the toilet when she wants to and not on my schedule. So she'll wake up in the middle of the night, knowing full well she needs the toilet, and when I take her out she'll just eat grass and chase butterflies and try and play with me... Its getting frustrating because I don't want my dog not going to the toilet when I tell her and them making a mess in my house! Help!!
Ok Iv looked and looked for his. But what about when ur dog keeps peeing on the backs of his front legs ?? Help. Does this not happen to anyone?? Ughh. I’m so tired of washing him everyday all day
One word commands are more effective such as “sh!£”! and increase decibels vocally with each attempt
They let you bring your dog to Europe?
I’m on 6th floor she gives me signals but then I have to wait for the elevator she owes I. Hallway this wouldn’t be happening if on 1st floor
The washroom?
What’s a “washroom??”. Who calls it this?
Why say "go to the washroom" which is incorect -- how about urinate or pee?
Hahah It’s funny that you’d say that. I always mention that to her as well😉 Happy Training ~Ken
Cant get mine to go in public although she will whine like she needs to go.
My Dog learned in 2 weeks as a puppy☺️ She is perfect
And then I got another puppy and he leaned in 1 week he learned from my first dog ☺️Love him
And now my dad got us a kitty and it’s been 1 month and is still not trained 😤 I’m trying to get rid of him but I’m gonna find him the perfect home
My dog pees outside, not in the washroom.
Call or wash room one more time
Washroom ?
Was confused too
I say potty
Why don’t you treat your dog after they go potty?
Vocal praise is good enough typically.
Washroom??
I’m on the toilet trying myself
Washroom??? Are you serious? Not “water closet?”
