It's surrealism :) And I'm currently listening to Chlorine now. It's gonna get stuck in my head now lol I agree with you about it being an allegory for being trans. I'm glad you enjoyed Chlorine. It's one of my favorite releases of this year.
Btw please also check out The Salt Grows Heavy by Cassandra Khaw whenever you can. That's a horror novella that's kind of like a retelling of The Little Mermaid, but it also isn't. Lately I've been really into mermaids. 😅

Thank you for reviewing this! I just finished this book in two days and my head is reeling. I didn't read the description and went in blind, and let me tell you- I was in for a ride. I didn't know the author goes by they/them, that explains a lot. I loved your take on this!

WHAT ARE THE CHANCES WE READ THIS AT THE SAME TIME 😮 I just finished this a few days ago too and gahhhh what an absolutely amazingly honest and grisly book.
Also I think it's surrealism hehehe. I also have an obsession with water-related horrors at the moment. Deep sea monsters, entities, phobias. Mmhmm.

The fact that I forgot the word “surrealism” will forever be my deepest shame

I finished this today - I also noticed the trans narrative, or at least how people who are trans could connect or relate to the story, and it made me think of you and I wondered if I was alone (because I haven't seen anyone mention it in GR reviews) and I'm glad to see I'm not. I loved this book, a great debut effort, and I loved your review too. Thanks so much.

The way you speak and articulate your thoughts is so lovely and admirable. Thankyou for the review, I just completed the book and wasn't completely sure what to make of it or what my own thoughts are, and I think hearing you talk gives me so much more to think about that I may have missed earlier. Especially it being a trans narrative. I never thought of it that way while reading the book, but now that you have said it, I can unsay or realise how obvious it is.

    ***SPOILERS***:
I just finished this book, I think it would have been better if the author spoke to people who actually did do competitive swim, but I also think the unreliable narrator aspect could play into it. An example I can think of is when Ren gets DQ'd during her 100 butterfly, but like during practice your ankles are tied together. If she really is the best on the team how would she have made this mistake if you spent hours with your legs tied until you're like 13 (& I think she is 15 in the novel when this happens). Even the tampon scene I'm like okay this is a little ridiculous it's not rocket science, you have practice in 5 minutes and you're already 13 be serious right now. I guess the swimming inconsistencies are because Ren herself is supposed to be narcissistic personality wise and that she has these delusions of grandeur after the concussion.
I also predicted that she would drown herself in the ocean at the end of the book just because I figured that's what we were building up to, but i didn't think the friend would be involved in a grand scheme to help her escape, it read so wattpad. Like let me assist you in your endeavor to drown yourself... idk i think the author had no idea how she was going to get ren from the hospital after her mutilation to the ocean to finish it. Overall, not sure about this one but I think it was good just needed a little shaping from an editor

I really really liked the first 3/4 of this. This felt so true to anyone growing up, even as a cis person. Puberty was horrific for me and it felt so relatable. I got really irritated with Ren toward the end. Specifically, I got very mad at how she used Cathy and just bounced. Maybe I was fixating on that but it’s how I felt.

I think it sounds like a book that's unputdownable. Now I want to buy copies for every teenager where this book will wrongly end up banned.
