I was born in 1972. Lego is part of my life. It shaped how I structured my brain, developed my skills, learned to be patient in order to solve problems as a young kid. More than playing with it, it was also the emotion of waiting for Christmas or a my birthday, dreaming reading the catalog. Much later, it remained a vector of joy, playing with my kids. My all-time preferred model remains the 856 Bulldozer. A condensate of technical simplicity and playing joy.

Thank you for your extensive response. I agree with you that Lego can be an important part of your development and can also provide particularly valuable memories and moments with your children. For me it is a way to relax and clear your head. Delicious de-stressing. The warmest greetings from the Netherlands

MsLeguman: I'm from 1975 and could tell the same story.
Also that specific Bulldozer was a fantastic model. I got it at a Christmas at my grandparents house, and the empty box remained in the guest room untill like 2003 when my Grandfather died, so I saw that box whenever we stayed there over the weekend gor more than 20 years. 😊

Sigh. I had started collecting Technic and Dacta sets back in the late 80's. By the late 90's I had my huge collection stored at my mom's house with some other of my things while I was out of the country. She gave my collection to her friend's kid. When I got back I couldn't believe what she did. She didn't understand what she did until I informed her that she gave away over $7,000 in Lego. The sad part was that she stopped talking to the mother and bratty kid a month after the incident and before I found out. My current Technic/MindStorm collection is no where near as large as my first. :-(

Got my first technic lego set in 1972, 5 years before the official techic lego evolution redesign.
Although your story is sad, its not unusual. My collection has grown to include other ppl collections, especially the 60s and 70s classic lego.
I have build sets i never had and always wanted, like The Apollo Eagle Lander. With minor mods.
Modern lego is cool but expensive.
Recently been buying the cheap china copies.
As its a personal collection and i like to build as its great stress relief

Some great models in the beginning, but you can see they kinda lost their way and lost sight of covering the wide spectrum of vehicles between the late 90's and early 2000's My last model was back in 1994 the 8880 supercar, the hours I spent willfully staring into Lego Technic catalogues between 88 and 94 wishing I had certain sets and wishing Christmas would come sooner and sooner, the bugatti has gotten my attention again after 24 yrs away

Speaking of catalogue dreaming. I wanted the first helicopter but couldn't afford it and then it hit me that I had all the parts but no instructions. So I found every photo that I could and started to build just by looking at the photos. It all came together and the rotors turned and could change pitch while the tail rotor spun around. What I didn't realise until recently was that I had effectively Reverse Engineered the model by counting holes and knowing the size of various parts. I learnt far more from building the model that way than if I had bought the set.

I dislike the studless Technic sets only now days, they allow for greater complexity and overall leaves a more smooth finish, but they are a pain to assemble and take apart let alone experiment with, i think the Technic sets from the mid 90's to early 2000 had the best sets overall, a great combination of both aspects, it's more fun to build with studs and Technic together.

The 1977 Tractor and 1978 Go Kart were the first technic sets given as gifts to my brother and me. Then we got space Lego and the more generic stuff, until I got the 1987 Robot, which was actually a transforming robot/truck (inspired by another very popular toy line). Then there was a big gap until I reinvigorated my interest with the mini Fork Lift in 2003. Since then it's been Star Wars and what Technic I can afford.

Still got the 8464 and 8431 lying around in pieces. Cannot believe how archaic they look compared to the models that came just 1-2 years later; they look more like mid-90s sets.
Personally I never liked the studless design of the never models, I know that they give you way more flexability in building, but it just doesn't seem like Lego to me.

My son and I now have sets from the early years and the last couple of years. We play with LEGO Technic very differently, he will build the sets as per the instructions and then display the models. I would build the models to plan and then all the parts would go in the LEGO Van I made in wood work class Year 9 I think. From all the parts other things could be created. This skill comes in handy with my job at a school repairing things or making new things from available parts or even just simply assembling kit furniture or equipment like mobile cricket nets shipped all the way out from England.

Awesome. Lego is a great toy to boost creativity and you can use it in many different ways! Sounds like you have a great jobBest regards from the Netherlands and thanks for your reply.

David Musgrave And that is the way that it should be used, to inspire creativity but too many people only build the main model, including my 13 year old son.

Modern bricks are more customized to whatever you are building. The old bricks, where were only so many, and you had to be really creative to get the look.
