    I am a 70 year old Englishman who spent the first half of life my living in various parts of London. I have spent most of today watching the complete set of videos about your visit to London. I thoroughly enjoyed them and even learnt a thing or two which I previously did not know. I find your positivity and sense of humour (humor in the US?) very endearing. You are a great couple and a skilled videographer and I wish you well for the future. I have subscribed and look forward to tomorrow when I will view your York video(s) a town I regularly visit with my RV. Thank-you for your efforts.

    The parrots are lndian Ring Necked Parrots. They were originally pets that someone released into the wild. They spread like wildfire. The house you were staying in was Georgian built about 1800. Hope you come back and visit my country again. Safe traveling.

    OK, I have now watched a good number of your videos and I would like to say a great big thank you. Your critique of the places you visit is insightful, informative, funny sometimes and above all honest and heartfelt. I love your attempt to get to grips with our quirkiness. I grew up very near Skipton Castle and actually had the pleasure of going to school with one of the sons of the family that owns and lives in the castle. Mr Fattorini used to have five cars. Four luxury cars and a tiny Fiat. He had the five personalized number plates FAT 1 through FAT 5, but he always put FAT 1 on the little car! Keep making great videos, you guys are brilliant!

      I found it endearing that you didn't know much about London and hadn't used Google to find out 😀 I think your surprise, bewilderment and attempts at understanding were loads of fun. Don't take any notice of people who tell you how things SHOULD be done in England. Carry on your own way. Much more fun to watch.

    there was a big legal battle about jaffa cakes, whether they are a cake or biscuit and hence subject to V.A.T (20% tax) the court ruled in favour of McVities and we don’t have to pay VAT on our Jaffa Cakes.

    London's parakeets are a typical postmodern world story... they are African Ring-Necked Parakeets that are descended from escaped pets, they have been very successful in London due to the large amount of food available to them all year round and their hardiness, which allows them to survive our winters. They've grown from a population of a few hundred in south-west London (I think they started out near Kew Gardens) to many thousands, spreading as far north as Enfield and as far south as Morden. I see them all the time in Rotherhithe! They're very noisy but very cute.

    For the best fish and chips you need to go to a coastal town where the fish is totally fresh. Good fish and chips is also dependent on the oil that is used in the fryer. Te best places actually blend their own and is unique to them.

    Bubble & Squeak in a restaurant or in this case, a little cafe, will not be "left over" stuff, but rather an actual recipe. The way "bubble and squeak" came about was people throwing their left over anything over a couple of days just together and cooking it together in a sauce or something similar, and it would bubble and squeak due to the randomness of the things going together.

    I've never really rated the fish & chip shops in London.... Some of the best fish & chip shops can be found in the North of England, in seaside towns and in the South West ( Devon & Cornwall) and the traditional presentation is the fish & chips in newspaper/paper wrapping. That is the working class way xD
    And if they ever take your fancy again, there is a place in Tokyo called Malins that does a close enough replication of the traditional fish & chips. A lot better than what is on offer at those British pubs like Hub and Hobgoblin...

    • @KariHaruka
      @KariHaruka 6 лет назад +4

      I agree. Many chip shops in Southern England (especially London) are awful and real malt vinegar is a must!
      My favourite place for Fish & Chips in the South is a place called Squires in Braunton.

    • @leod-sigefast
      @leod-sigefast 6 лет назад +1

      Yes, agreed, anywhere outside of the South East is better. You can even get gravy with your chips up north, gorgeous! Ignore snobby southerners, gravy is a beautiful English sauce. What is their alternative: Asian curry sauce, tartar or ketchup (not even English)!

    Black Pudding. Fish and Chips needs salt and vinegar. Tartare Sauce is optional. 😎 Best shower curtain is a double curtain where the water proof curtain hangs inside the bath and the material curtain hangs outside. This keeps the waterproof curtain from moving and wrapping itself around you. I have one and it’s good.
    Fly tipping is when a truck dumps rubbish in an unauthorised place usually a residential area. It usually consists of rubble and other waste materials from house building or repairs. This is done to avoid paying fees at the authorised rubbish tip provided by the council. It’s a big problem for residents when fly tipping occurs in their neighbourhood because it can be difficult to get it removed and can be expensive.

    Mmmm British Food... as an Atlantic Canadian many popular food items in our region have British roots (others are often French)... bubble and squeak is an old family favorite way to use up leftovers from a big meal, like turkey dinner... baked potato with beans and stuffs on it is also one my grandparents often made! Fish and chips though that’s HUGE where I come from! Here in Atlantic Canada we do a lot of fishing and fish and chips made with fresh caught fish is the absolute best!!

    I love Fish & Chips. It tastes better when eaten out of a roll of newspaper as a takeaway food. They don't do that now though because of health scares from the newsprint. You can still get it in a proper Fish & Chip place rolled up in clean paper, but watch out for seagulls if you're walking around eating - they like to steal food. And yes, you do get seagulls inland!

      it's usually made of the leftover potatoes and vegetables from the sunday roast fried together - usually there is some sort of leafy vegetable (spring greens, cabbage or spinach) as the bulk vegetable, but not uncommon to have other stuff such as broccoli, cauliflour or parsnip mixed in there too

    Bubble and squeak is not a casserole a casserole in the uk is either meat and or vegetables cooked in a sauce in the oven and if it is cooked on the hob it is a stew. It is left over mash potato and cabbage which is fried. The reason it is called that is because of the noise it makes when it cooks.

    The birds in Hyde park are there because of the film 'The African queen' after filming in London they just let them all loose and they survived and bred.

    • @futtocks23
      @futtocks23 6 лет назад

      Truth is, nobody really knows how this non-native bird first came to our shores. There are many theories:
      1. The blighters escaped from the set of The African Queen, which was filmed at Isleworth Studios in 1951. This is the part of town where large flocks were first noticed. But that didn't happen till the mid-1990s. Where were they hiding for 40 years?
      2. Jimi Hendrix released a breeding pair during a 1960s Carnaby Street stunt. Definitely not true. There's no record of the stunt. Plus, we once met Hendrix's former girlfriend Kathy Etchingham, who told us she'd never heard of the myth until recently.
      3. The Great Storm of 1987 wrecked a number of aviaries in the well-to-do Surrey borders. This seems to make the most sense - it dovetails neatly with the first mass sightings a few years later. This is coincidental evidence only, though.

Wash that down with a bottle of Sauvignon blanc and you are eating food better than a five star hotel. The muscles are great also.

    I have , as we call it, a "fry-up" twice a week and it consists of everything you had in the "English Breakfast. The Black Pudding is made from blood and is a Northern England delicacy, very nice. The veggie sausage is probably soya and is very bland. Bread pudding, delicous and recommended.
    At one time there was a police officer stationed outside the Embassy but I guess they got bored waiting for Assange to come out so he is back patrolling.
    At one point it was planned to eradicate the parrots but it caused a lot of trouble so they are still there.
    If I start on a Jaffa Cake they all go in minutes.
    Nice to hear such positive reviews of England and the English, especially London. You are welcome back anytime.

    On your next visit to London you must visit the British Museum. It’s one of the greatest museums of world culture and it’s free! You can see Assyrian wall reliefs, Egyptian mummies, the Rosetta Stone, the frieze from the Parthenon and that’s just the first few things that popped into my head. Well worth half a day.

    Flytipping is when people dump bulk rubbish/rubble, builders rubbish ,large electrical items, often when they have been paid to dispose of it properly.

    Hello to both of you, I stumbled across your videos randomly a while back & I've gradually been working my way through. I just wanted to say thanks as they've been interesting, alot of fun & have helped take my mind off some things which were happening lately. It's amazing how you can get drawn into binge watching two nice people just experiencing & appreciating things.
    Not sure if anyone's suggested it before but if you do come back to London at some point, Alexandra Palace is a beautiful building with a park in North London which is high up on a hill & on a nice sunny day has a great view from getting toward the outer edge of London looking back in toward the centre. It's probably not worth a days visit there by itself but a look around & a wander in the park to check out the view would probably be interesting.
    Take care on your travels & keep having fun :)

    You're both very likeable and so I've watched all of your UK videos. Well done for going to an ordinary proper fish & chip shop as opposed to an over-priced pub. The shower screen at your Airbnb is a single one. It should've been a fold-out triple one like mine-no water on the floor. The Tube was the first in the world, hence the oldest. There are newer and brand new lines though. I'm surprised you didn't go to The British Museum and Hampton Court as they are both world famous. If you come back try to go to Cambridge. It's roughly only 50 minutes away from London depending on what train you catch. Thank you for great viewing!

    Fly tipping is when people roll up (usually in a van) and dump stuff like old mattresses, refrigerators or busted furniture on the side of the road and then drive off. Some fly tippers operate a sort of racket where they offer a house clearance service, and their customers think their large household items are being taken to the tip to be properly disposed of when in reality it's just being driven to some random place and dumped there. It's a really bad problem, because fly tippers often choose to unload the rubbish in rural areas and it costs money to clean it up.

    If you liked the Tower of London, then when you go back to London, take the boat up the river to Hampton Court Palace (it's a Tudor Palace), or take the train to Windsor and visit the castle there.

    The parrots have bred on in the wild after some cage birds had escaped some years back. They have adapted to the cold, damp weather very well. Adds some bright colour to a frequently drab scene.

    About the fish and chips. I live in Devon, were we know about fish. That was not a big portion, down here, that was a children’s portion. The best fish and chips is to be found at The Start Bay Inn. Much of the fish travels zero food miles to get to the pub; they land it on the beach right outside. You guys need to come to Devon.

    I'm from England and an English breakfast is just the best way to start the day. It's one of my favourite things to cook! I love trying new foods which I've been doing a lot of while travelling. It's so odd watching someone try English food for the first time. You have to try a cream tea they are lovely, you have to try and find a place where the scones are fresh and not just thrown in the microwave.

    Wow, BLANDFORD! Ok so - I live in Ontario where everything is named after European stuff (for example, I live in London, Ontario and we have a little Thames river...we are close to other areas of Ontario named Paris, Waterloo, Culloden...you get the idea). When I drive from my city to my Grandparent's city, I always pass a Blandford road sign while I go down the freeway and always laugh as I drive by it. Now I know where that name came from xD of course it's in England. So many weird street names there, I've been enjoying them all.

    Oh, you need to squat in the corner of the bathtub, the best between two walls to take the shower and not splash the water everywhere:) And the flytipping is when sb leaves bulky garbage illegaly (old car, old fridge etc.)

    Great videos with some interesting people. I've rarely seen this high resolution on RUclips videos and it makes the scenery and food jump out at you. One thing that surprised me is that you didn't go to any of the many excellent museums the majority of which are free, the jewel of them all being The British Museum. You can pop in there for an hour and lose track of time and you come out and it's the day after!

    The advice for the fish and chips was well placed, Gastropubs and hotels will serve you something that is very nice but far removed from the authentic experience you are looking for. However, you ended up at a Kebab House that happened to serve fish and chips. Ideally you would want to visit a dedicated fish and chip shop. The fish looked pretty decent but the chips looked sub-standard frozen offerings (common in Kebab houses).
