Listening to your teens wants is really important, even if you cannot redo anything for them. Tell them exactly why you can't. But don't be mean or aggressive or condescending while you explain. try to meet them half way with their wants.
Yes! I remember going to Home Depot with my dad around the same age and I picked out 3 color swatches that I liked, just for fun. I came home from school the next day and my dad had gone back to Home Depot, bought the paint and taken 3 doors in our house off the hinges and painted them in my color swatches. They matched absolutely NOTHING in the house, but I was overjoyed. The house is decorated like a log cabin and the colors I chose were LIME GREEN, ELECTRIC BLUE AND NEON PURPLE. He didn’t even consult my mom first😂.
I completely agree!!! My room always felt so “mine.” My mom let me choose everything. Looking back it was sort of hideous, but she let me design it and I was so proud of it.

YES ! IT"S JUST PAINT!!!! When my kids were little I took a coloring book page, enlarged a picture of Scooby Doo and Shaggy to 1' x 2' and painted it on my son's wall. For my daughter's nursery I painted a 2' x 4' Minnie Mouse in a ballerina costume with gold glitter paint stars all around her head. Their friends were so jealous they had such cool rooms! I can't remember how many colors my daughter has had her room painted! She's 25 now and moved out a couple of years ago, but about 6 months before that happened she repainted her room again.
I remember when I came home at like 14 from a weekend church activity and my bedroom walls were painted to a horrendous neon green because for some reason my mom didn't like my suggestion of a deep navy blue and decided for herself. Because "bright colors are fun!" My mom got upset at me for not being grateful for the work she had put into my room 😑 I hated that room so much and had constant headaches from it. So thank you for actually listening to your children and respecting their styles.
A sponge roller works the best when painting furniture. I also found rustoleum chalk paint polyurethane in a can. I used that when I refinished my bedroom furniture and it has an incredibly smooth professional finish. The main tool is the sponge roller. Also a suggestion: if you add black knobs to the dresser it will tie it together with the night stands, mirror and lamps.
Kids deserve the room they want. This came out great. Truthfully I loved her before room better but that is a matter of personal preference. If this makes Haley feel good then good job.

It took months of begging to paint it and was not allowed to change the furniture but I was super stoked when I finally was able t paint it a light denim blue. She then repainted it 3 days after I moved out. On the other hand, my kids can choose whatever the heck they want for decor as long as clean their rooms fairly regularly.
I love that Coastal Fog. The room is beautiful. I think you should add black shaker drawer pulls to the dresser so it coordinates with the closet and nightstand.
A nice alternative to a bedframe with a headboard or a headboard that stands on the floor is to mount a shallow 'floating' headboard on the wall. This is a good option when you've got limited space and it also allows to you place the headboard at whatever height you desire. I purchased one that's made up of 18-inch upholstered square panels (it came with 8, but I use 6 for my double bed), and I've recovered the panels at least three times in past ten years.
We had a flood in our home. During that three months, I decided to redo our two spare bedrooms. We decided to have all king beds in our home, for more efficient sheet/bed maintenance. I was very impressed with Amazons headboard selection. We did not have headboards in those rooms anyway. In the week between the time we were allowed back in the house and the delivery of the furniture, I was able to get a nice headboard and put it together the day it arrived, very easily. The second spare bedroom has a Murphy bed in it, also a king bed. It is definitely much easier to take care of.
I love that you let your 18 year old redo her room!!! I did mine at 18 as a mural of handprints with some friends and I go home and still love it at 30. It made a weird time in my life of leaving college and moving home to community college so much easier ❤️
I really like the green. It all flows so much better with the carpet that's in there, plus it still ties in the gray from the rest of the house. Nicely done. Oh, and the duvet is so cute.

Wax is great on chalk paint but it takes a very long time to properly cure. It seems usable right away but the finish is delicate for quite a while. I would have used a non- yellowing water-based clear top coat. General finishes makes a good one. If you use a foam roller it leaves a steak-free finish. I love chalk paint so much! The trick is to thin it with water and use multiple coats.
I love the evergreen fog ! It was the 2022 color of the year for a reason 😊. I used it as an accent wall in my family room and now I want to paint it on all the things 😂 I’ve always let my kids pick their room colors and they love it. I think bringing in a green blanket for the foot of the bed would really help tie it all together. I love the room choices 💚
Looks great. The progression in the rooms shows your changing to an adult. Also the pillow fight at the end was the funniest thing EVER........SURRRRRREEEEENNNNNDER
Black handle pulls for the dresser would pop it for that wall. When you collage the other wall hang several collages and hang at angles or varying heights instead of straight across. It will stand out really well.
Hailey's room looks great! I suggest knobs for the dresser drawers which will help avoid finger prints. Christine- I painted my kitchen Sea Salt based off how great it looks in your house!
18 years young makes her a young adult! Not a young girl anymore although we want them to stay kids forever they do grow unto their own individual beings. Sweet that she can express herself in this way while still living at home. Leads the way to her own path as the years follow. Good job on the fantastic room!!
You all are so precious, just love you guys. That blue wall was my kitchen accent wall colour when we lived near Santa fe NM. I loved it so much. Apparently so do the people who moved in because 6 years later I checked in and it still remains. They also made that same colour an accent colour through out the house.

My parents bought a house the summer between my 8th grade year and 9th grade year. The next summer my dad and his friend repainted the interior and he let my sister and I each choose the color we wanted for our rooms. I chose a soft blue and my sister chose a mint green. I loved him so much for letting me pick my color!! That room remained blue until I married, then my sister moved into it and painted it green!
It is awesome that you & Dave are teaching your kids how to do so many skills that we all need to do. It's so important to know these things than be blindsided by something that your clueless on. Both my husband & were like that. We didn't know any thing about maintaining a home & much, much more. We made it though, we're coming up on our 47th anniversary! At first I thought it was odd to redo a room so soon and within a year of your daughter going to college, then two seconds later, reality hit. They change fast between ages 17-19! With my own daughter in her fourth year at college, I can attest that they do come home; especially for holidays, long breaks and summers. The possibility of moving home after college is very realistic because small rentals are expensive! So much to like with her room redo. I love the colors! Also, what's smart about a queen bed for an older child (if you have the room) is that they can take it with them or it can stay as a guest bed. She could literally be set up for a grown up bedroom in her own place with that furniture. I'm not a fan of cute kiddy furniture that doesn't transition well into adulthood. My girl, had a sky blue bedroom we never repainted. She decided several years ago she wanted a medium to dark grey bedroom. Awesome, I also found black paint on clearance I can remix, but then life hit us hard. We didn't repaint her room as planned, but she's completely happy coming home because the colors match the Sonic Green Hill Zone and she's a big fan! I can always paint another room grey. Parents can be flexible too. I always tape first, then edge with a trim brush, then use the roller. I love the 3M blue tape with 3ft of plastic already attached on a roll with a cutter! I still use a cloth tarp underneath too, less of a tripping hazard for me. I've been a fan of the Paint Sticks I saw in the clip the blogger used, for 25 years; total gamechanger how fast I can paint! Well done and super teamwork! 💜

Being a frugal mom that also likes diy projects I would build the giant frame by buying some trim boards at Home Depot or Lowes. That way you can build any size you want.
Guys, I love it that you are showing Hayley how to DYI! I learned to put up wallpaper and paint as well as lay tiles by helping my parents on their projects. And it came down really useful when I bought my flat and had to paint and lay tiles. BTW, it's a lot of fun seeing the results of your efforts at the end of each day renovating. So satisfying! Late 20s gal here: my last "childhood bedroom" redo at my parents was also a soft green and a neutral, with light wood furniture. Very versatile, light, and peaceful. Still love that room years later :)

We let our kids choose the color of their rooms. My oldest son's room he wanted red and black for his colors, my two younger boys choose green for the paint color ( it looks like a green crayon on the walls in there). I told my husband when they get older and move out then I can repaint the walls.
Christine, my son is just like your boys. I have begged to repaint his room many times. I even told him I'd do it myself bc I thought he just didn't want to do the painting. Nope. He doesn't even like rearranging his room. The only thing he's asked for in his room is a more sturdy desk. Btw, Hailey's new grown up room is fantastic!! Still can't believe she's 18!
The room is AMAZING!...as I looked into the round mirror it looked like a horizon almost...what if there was a sunrise(or set)painting over her bed & she could see it when she looked in the mirror? The memory collage could go on the wall behind the door where the long mirror is & th mirror could go beneath the clothes hanger...just a thought

My parents divorced when I was really young. I lived with my mom for years until I moved in with my dad at 13. Him and my stepmom bought me a brand new furniture set and let me pick the paint. Then when I was around 16 I wanted to completely redo it (and bring my queen bed from my moms). They let me paint it greenish mustard yellow and got me new bedding and curtains. I adored that room soooo much and was so grateful and proud of it. I took really good care of it. Very sweet of you to listen to Haley's wishes 🤍 I hope my daughter and I have this relationship one day.
When using chalk paint- you’ve got to go with Annie Sloan. She’s the OG of chalk paint and the consistency of the paint is a freaking DREAM to work with. The knock offs just don’t compare.
Listen, I'm 35 and I still like to change up my room every couple of years! It's fun to make things different and keeps me from being bored in my own space.
I never did anything with my room while growing up aside from the posters. I was content with it though. It wasn't until I was 25 that I finally painted my room in my moms house. Now, that I have my own house I painted one wall for accent. I think this is why I don't have a good sense of style. I never did it growing up. 😅
The wall color is beautiful!! The room looks so good!! Just to let you know not all chalk paints are hard to work with. Annie Sloan and Dixie Bell brand chalk paints are my favorite. Easy to work with self leveling and top with clear wax. I’ve never had any problems with finger prints or chipping with either these brands.

I hate decorating but thankfully my mother in law is AMAZING at it. We are remodeling my fixer upper new home and she has been such a blessing.

That room is so warm and relaxing! I love the accent wall. The walls in our house are Agreeable Gray so this is giving me ideas, ha ha. Great job!
You can also use a clear non-yellowing poly over chalk paint, instead of wax. Wax is a PITA. Poly is much easier to deal with.

You should use a water based poly over your chalk paint. It works, and protects the finish from soil.

We let our kids choose the color of their rooms. My oldest son's room he wanted red and black for his colors, my two younger boys choose green for the paint color ( it looks like a green crayon on the walls in there). I told my husband when they get older and move out then I can repaint the walls.
We just ordered a Helix mattress last weekend. I can’t wait until it arrives! I’m looking forward to a comfortable nights sleep.
Christine, my son is just like your boys. I have begged to repaint his room many times. I even told him I'd do it myself bc I thought he just didn't want to do the painting. Nope. He doesn't even like rearranging his room. The only thing he's asked for in his room is a more sturdy desk.

The room is AMAZING!...as I looked into the round mirror it looked like a horizon almost...what if there was a sunrise(or set)painting over her bed & she could see it when she looked in the mirror?
The memory collage could go on the wall behind the door where the long mirror is & th mirror could go beneath the clothes hanger...just a thought
Hayley what about a Diy macrame hanging for your headboard wall. Nice piece of drift wood and tan jute. You could add memory trinkets to the piece. 😊

My parents divorced when I was really young. I lived with my mom for years until I moved in with my dad at 13. Him and my stepmom bought me a brand new furniture set and let me pick the paint. Then when I was around 16 I wanted to completely redo it (and bring my queen bed from my moms). They let me paint it greenish mustard yellow and got me new bedding and curtains. I adored that room soooo much and was so grateful and proud of it. I took really good care of it. Very sweet of you to listen to Haley's wishes 🤍 I hope my daughter and I have this relationship one day.
I pray my relationship with my daughter is as good as yours is when she is 18!
When using chalk paint- you’ve got to go with Annie Sloan. She’s the OG of chalk paint and the consistency of the paint is a freaking DREAM to work with. The knock offs just don’t compare.

I like the behr chalk paint and then I use polyurethane to seal. Makes it very durable.

If you can add drawer pulls to the white dresser, it will look even better. You can find plenty in thrift stores to make the dresser complete.

I never did anything with my room while growing up aside from the posters. I was content with it though. It wasn't until I was 25 that I finally painted my room in my moms house. Now, that I have my own house I painted one wall for accent. I think this is why I don't have a good sense of style. I never did it growing up. 😅

The wall color is beautiful!! The room looks so good!! Just to let you know not all chalk paints are hard to work with. Annie Sloan and Dixie Bell brand chalk paints are my favorite. Easy to work with self leveling and top with clear wax. I’ve never had any problems with finger prints or chipping with either these brands.
