Environmental Engineering | Experiment | Pollutant Adsorption with Activated Carbon Geocomposite

Here you can see how activated carbon in combination with geotextiles can adsorb pollutants. In this experiment with methylene blue you can guess what active geocomposites with granular activated carbon can achieve in environmental engineering. The textiles give the activated carbon layer mechanical stability and a constant layer thickness. In this way, pollutants already present in the environment can be encapsulated, new pollutant inputs prevented and pollutants removed from liquids and gases.

I think the reason for it not turning completely colourless is due to less surface area for adsorption since the solution is poured directly onto the surface, i think if the solution was passed through the charcoal then it might have given better results. Btw the video was really wonderful!

I wonder if, after a treatment with alumina, activated carbon would be useful to treat laundry wastewaters in order to eliminate surfactants and detergents.

Thank you for your question. Our company has not made any tests on this and therefore cannot report any practical experience. Basically, activated alumina (aluminum oxide) is used for the removal of polar, hydrophilic organic substances. Activated carbon is a preferred filter material for the separation of hydrophobic organic compounds. Adsorber resins are also used to remove tensides. Thank you again for your interest. This depends very much on the inner surface area of activated carbon (AC). The surface are of an AC from coconut shells is higher than from an AC made of wood, for example.
