Hell and a Hard Place | Animated Short Film (2017)

The Western front, France, 1916. Hans is a young soldier stuck in no-mans-land, frightened and alone. Artillery fire, machine guns, and gas attacks engulf him. With little hope of survival, Hans does his best to stay strong in this field of death and destruction.
I worked on this alone over several months as a personal project on the side while I focused on gaining work experience during my third year studying animation at Ulster University, Belfast. I wanted to learn to rig and texture and pretty much all the basics from start to finish of an animation so I took it upon myself to learn them. The story was written by my father as a series of short scripts surrounding this character.

@@BlayneFX What I really love about it is the humanity of it. Even before he takes his gas-mask off you managed to make him feel very human and vulnerable ... the idea with the non-exploding shell is also excellent.
