Hi Daniel. I pretty much agree with your comments across the board as I use all three programs, however, I recently discovered another called Realistic. It has few features yet but absolutely the greatest paper/canvas brush mixing I've ever experienced, especially with dry tools such as pencils and pastels. I feels like the real deal. I haven't felt this excited with a art program in years. Give it a try. You'll love it!

Rebelle 4 is better across the board and with the new oil brushes, I haven't touched Artrage.
    ...
Edit: for those who think they're missing out because Procreate is Apple only, try Clip Studio Paint (aka Manga Pro). Its far better in my opinion overall. I do recommend a 3rd party brush "painting" bundle from Daub (as an example), to see what CSP can really do. Their in house Oil, Acrylic & Watercolor brushes don't do the program justice in my opinion.

I'm so glad to hear your honest assessment and that ArtRage was your favorite for oil simulation. My ipad 2 is so old and needs to be upgraded, but I used to love ArtRage, but everyone else was raving about Procreate, so I wondered what I was missing. I am a traditional artist having experience in most mediums, but not traditional pastels, but I loved the pastels in ArtRage. ArtRage just feels intuitive to me.

Thanks, good video.. if just for the excellent ways you set up the interfaces and used the photo for the palette, but also good well beyond that. Have you used Art Set on iOS? The interface is royal pain to get going but the brushes are -by far- my favorite out of the 20+ paint apps I've tried. My current workflow includes Art Set, Rebelle 4, Procreate... and occasionally Artrage (but seeing your Artrage interface I'll set that up and try again), painter light (for the add texture tool only, and not being into paying for Photoshop, using about 3-4 programs to cover that. Pain in the ass not being able to just work in one place... Cheers.

Rebelle is definitely headed in the right direction. Every edition has only been leaps better than the previous.
Many of my students, have switched to Rebelle over Painter, especially since Painter no longer supports Tablets including the Surface Pro 7 & issues with Wacom's tablets.

I have rebelle, its ok but you need a powerful computer. Even with an i7 and 32gb of ram the program will slow down if I paint at half sheet size with print dpi and WC. Artrage runs a lot smoother. I dont use layers in artrage but I imagine it doesnt matter Since ive started on artrage I dont really paint in procreate all that much anymore. The big downside for me with anything compared to procreate is the lack of the apple pencil. I do (or did before covid) alot of life drawing on the ipad and I could basically get the same level of halftones I would with a prismacolor or pitt pastel using the pencil on its side. Ive been doing alot of figure drawing at home from photos lately and just havent found good settings for it in artrage. Ive been using the sketchbook pro pencil tool and airbrush to get similar effects, still kind of awkward to use two tools when one would work better. I just got painter 2020 in the humble bundle for 40$ and it sucks compared to artrage. Runs poorly and its more like photoshop than artrage....some OK brushes and tools but overall artrage is just so much better of a paint simulator.

I AGREE with everything you said! I finally upgraded my pc, and that is the only way I could run Rebelle 3 well. Before that, the cursor was just a loading icon... lots of crashes... etc. With a high power PC it is awesome... But again, yes, ARTRAGE is so so far beyond Painter... I don'y know why anyone would use Painter. Your comments are spot on!

    • @brushonfire8800

Daniel Ibanez I see a few guys pushing painter hard on RUclips but really they look like they haven’t had any real art training what so ever, then there’s a few holdouts who are still using it in concept art and illustration because that’s what they know . Doesn’t make sense to me either and I feel a bit like I wasted 40$. Even the sales tactic to me doesn’t make sense... the software is worth 400$ but if I wait till you add like 2 features next year I can get it without those for 10% of that?!
I’m still doing typically digital type artworks but I’m using affinity photo/designer for that (mostly cuz I don’t like adobe rent our software business model) and that does everything painter does minus the real paint simulation better.
I dunno it’s odd to me, artrage is so damn good I don’t know why it isn’t more popular...
Even if they really brought the iPad version up to par I think at this point nothing will compete with procreate on any level in terms of user base.
It’s become what photoshop is on pc.
I’m actually looking forward to the day they say ok we are doing procreate for Mac and pc... adobe will be sweating bullets

@@brushonfire8800 so true. The only difference for me is, that I teach photoshop. And so I get a really good discount on the creative suite... and I just couldn't do my client work without it. I would say that I use outrage Photoshop equally and I use rebelle for mixing it up... I do think that bringing artrage mobile up to equivalence with pc should be a goal for the Artrage team!

I'm wondering if Artrage 6 has fixed what I call a bug. On-canvas blending. Painting a low-saturation, greyed-out, color into a black or darker grey. Extra blending pulls out a higher-intensity color. A high-saturation blue from a low-level grey-blue, for example. For no real reason. Kind of frustrating. Doesn't seem realistic to me. Can't get median colors like I want. If they did something where a grey color blends satisfactorily into a darker color, that could be a seller for me. Or an upgrade in my case.

I like so much Procreate, but is not well suited for oil painting simulation. You can create or use better custom brushes than default ones, but they don't fell as Artrage or even Rebelle. IMHO on iPad -for oil painting simulation- is better Artstudio Pro, has better blending, some kind of thick paint (in v3.0) and better default brushes. And even better Artset 4 with proper canvas influence and real thick paint.
On computer, for thick paint i like Corel Painter.
