  • Hogue RSK MK1 20CV edge retention testing, done at both 17 dps and 15 dps. Where did this come from and what happened during the process? I have an idea so follow along to find out. Thanks to Rob for sending this along for me to test and then giving it to BJ to replace his lost one. Thank you, it's very well appreciated.

    Great video! I talked about this very thing in one of my cut test videos about a month ago. I have started sharpening M390 and the like at 17-18 DPS, I was doing 15 dps in the past but it seems like the broader angle works better on those steels!!!

      It is funny that secondary bevel angle makes a big difference on some and then on others it makes very little difference.

      The old Cliff Stamp mentioned something similar about high carbide steels in his message board awhile back. Simple steels at high rockwall should be able to handle it. He had a custom 01 tool steel knife in 63.5 Rockwall that he took down to below 15 degrees that performed pretty good.

    I’ve got about a dozen or so of the Ritter Grips in m390 from Benchmades Run… if you’d like to test the batch I’d be glad to send them your way… would be curious where they all line up in terms of HRC and if there’s consistency there… I love the Ritter blade shape and the stonewash on the blade… but I also want a knife that performs to expectation… I keep hearing how balanced and great m390 is for EDC… but then I see these low HRC numbers out there and I’m left scratching my head…

      When it's heat treated well for use in a knife M390 is a great edc steel. 2 examples would be my RSK in 20CV and my 2016 M390 PM2. The user experience is vastly different between the pair. I use the Ritter RSK most days for work for how comfortable it is to use as well as the blade shape being very useful to me. My email is in the description, message me and we can talk about testing those knives. I also am curious to see how they do.

    Didn't you have Ganzos that HRC'D high but wouldn't cut for crap, I forget. I run my RSK at 18° and its like XHP performance, so its OK. But the whole M390, 20cv, 204 thing seems like a swing and a miss to me, barring a few knives with high HRC's. Time for a new "supersteel" 😁. Maybe some old fashioned s90v might make the Ritter great. Its a shame, as the knife is an ergonomic masterpiece once you get rid of that lame deep carry clip. Deep carry is a dumb idea on a hard use knife as it creates a big hotspot on heavy, extended push cut sessions. I spit on deep carry.

    • @kknives_switzerland
      @kknives_switzerland 4 года назад +6

      This is why I have been and am still doing and recommending edge hardness testing with Micro Vickers testing. The spine can be any hrc number - but if the edge area is overheated by grinding, which my testing sadly very often revealed, it's irrelevant what the spine reads. This is why Outpost 76 and the other testers will sharpen a few times before the actual test - in some cases that will remove the overheated, soft steel. Of course though, the microstructure of the steel must also be right, BOTH hrc AND microstructure must be right. (EDIT: If you want more info on edge hardness testing, watch my newest video.)

      I like deep carry, it doesn't cause me any issues on the knives I have. Everyones hands are different though. I haven't used s90 but I have been using s110 quite a bit. It blows away all of my s30. I've used a good bit of m390 falling into the hype, and I was never impressed with it. Got rid of it all. I honestly believe for general edc, opening a box by cutting the tape, snipping a string, opening an envelope and cutting your apple because you can, steel doesn't matter. Hrc isn't important, composition and microstructure does not come into play. Some of my favorites come in with good ole 1095 under 60 hrc. Learn to sharpen and don't abuse your knives. Use the right tool for the job. That said it's fun to get the latest and greatest and see who's better than who at this crazy steel. Brag about having a knife second in hardness to tungsten carbide, and polishing your edge better than your bathroom mirror. It's all just fun and games. I still need to get a hogue, I regret trading my Benchmade Ritter mini grip. It was such a good knife, I got a new to me $2000 mountain bike from it and a few other blades though.

    Will the slightly softer M390 from Kershaw have the same issue at lower angles? I got myself a Dividend for whittling hardwoods but it just does not have any bite into the wood. I know it will never carve like a Mora or an Opinel but it would be nice to take the bevel down a little so as to be usable at least. It still has the factory grind, burr and all.

    • @Outpost_76
      @Outpost_76  4 года назад +1

      I tested 2 different M390 Dividend at both 18 dps and 15 dps. Edge retention didn't really improve with the angle drop but it was as stable at 15 as at 18 dps. It should have no problem with wood. Factory angle on those is close to 20 dps, I'd try 18 dps and if that holds up drop it from there until it does better for you while not taking damage. I'll try 15 dps on mine against hickory and oak and see how it does this weekend.
