On October 1st, 1962, Johnny Carson hosted his first episode of The Tonight Show and began his incredible 30 year reign as the King of Late Night! To celebrate this remarkable milestone we will be posting classic first appearances for the entire month of October. Happy Anniversary Johnny!
Thank you SO much for posting the early shows. It's amazing to watch the history I lived through, and didn't pay attention to at the time, being too young and dumb.
Sounds just like it would on a rainy cloudy day in the 60's. That was television, sometimes the picture was snowy, the sound maybe off, but better than staring at the walls.
wouldn't be surprised if some of his crooked goons like G. Gordon Liddy broke into the NBC studio and scratched the beginning of the audio tape to erase some embarrassing thing this tenacious baboon in a suit let out
Mr. McMahon was rumored to have coached Mr. Nixon on how to play to the camera and media. Hence the very warm hand-shake. This is a terrific historical piece of American Late Night Television. Thank-you for sharing.
As a life long Dem I’ve always had an appreciation for RMN and he presents well here of course that has to do with Johnny’s clever hosting - marvelous!
Well the Demoncrat party is no longer the party it used to be...im sure you've noticed...the only hope for our country now is to vote republican. I was a Democrat as well, but I woke up.
@@kevinbown424 You must have woke up with a stroke my dear - it’s pretty safe to say that both parties have changed quite a bit in the last 50 years. Who hurt you Kevin, to drive you into the eager arms of an authoritarian, whites only, woman hating cult? Personally, I regard people for their character and intelligence not their political persuasion or the latest smell of the week competition. And that includes you fellow citizen…
That's awesome! I didn't know the first show was on the first of October. That's my birthday but I was born in 82. Nice new fact to learn:) I love Johnny Carson. So much better than these days.
Watch most All the Johnny Carson interviews on RUclips. Even just with common quirky people as guests. His hosting/interview skills and charisma made for electric moments on television. Johnny Carson was a true classic and legendary entertainer. 🌟 🤩
Carson was a fan of Nixon's. In 1972 at a Hollywood party, Cher was making fun of Nixon and Johnny didn't like it. Lucy was also at that party and both she and Cher were NOT Nixon fans. That is why you never saw Cher on The Tonight Show when Johnny was hosting, only when there was a guest host. Lucy however appeared with Johnny.
Lucy was pretty conservative, but I suspect part of her dislike of RMN sourced to the red-baiting era, which almost took her down. Her grandfather had been a member of the Communist Party in the 1930s.
I loved seeing this encounter between these two hugely influential persons...(trivial note: the original airdate is listed as being in January 1968...but they joke about Johnson pardoning the Thanksgiving turkey...plus as Nixon is departing, Carson wishes him and his family a Happy Thanksgiving)
3:25, Nixon’s quip about lending his makeup man to Lyndon Johnson was pretty hilarious. Nixon was referring to his poor TV makeup job in the 1960 first debate, and of course was salivating at the chance of taking on Johnson the next year in the campaign (of course Johnson would unexpectedly drop out in March).
Pres. Nixon was a good man and a smart man. Pres. Nixon tried to help the working folks and the powers that really rule nailed his butt for it. I like Richard Nixon and I wish we had leaders like him today.
"...but always have in mind that this("peace") is not going to come by reason of...uh...simply having a meeting in which everybody speaks of their grandchildren and alike it's going to come because of these very practical considerations." Nixon acknowledging and conceding the frailty of human-kind; the emotional nature of man's inclinations superseding that of the logic based approach.
Alot of the Carson shows of the 1960s were recorded over due to budget restraints. Unfortunately that's why there are not many around to watch like there is of the 70s, 80s and 90s.
It was aired at Thanksgiving time according to the conversation. A quick check supports 11/22/67 as the date. The date you list could have been a "Best of Carson" re-airing.
@@johnnycarson Wow. Someone who can actually admit to error and make corrections! Rare on RUclips. Kudos! Also, many thanks for making these classic clips available to those of us who loved Johnny and his show. Also, how difficult is it to transfer these from the source to RUclips format? It cannot be easy. Maybe you could make a future video on this project?
The Audio can be 'Cleaned Up' as has been done, with films from the 30's and so on.... Example would be the Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl, the audience, was so intense that you could not hear them singing.
You should hear what a wonderful man he was in all the private tapes from the Oval office. How tolerant and kind he was especially towards Jews, Gays and Democrats. Oh and lets not forget the Vietnamese. Yeah, he was a real sweet guy..
Nixon accomplished more in a day than any president in the last 35 years accomplished during their term. If he rose from the grave I would vote for him again. I tried to when I was 12, but they wouldn't let me.
Nixon was the last Republican elected President who was known at the time as a "liberal Republican" (also referred to as a "Rockefeller Republican")🎉. He created the EPA and OSHA, and advocated for a national health care system. He was very cerebral and came from a poor background in S. California.
Unfortunately we elect people with our emotions instead of our heads. Forget their looks & personality & focus on what really matters: their agendas & policies. Trump is a perfect example of that. I'm looking at policies. If that person can make & keep the country safe & make it prosperous, thereby making me safe & prosperous then you got my vote. That's all I care about & to hell with the looks & personality.
...and _that_ is why Trump will go down as, will eventually, be remembered as one the best to have occupied this nation's Highest Elected Office. Those currently in the throes of TDS("Trump Derangement Syndrome") or otherwise crippled by their purely emotional i.e. irrational response to his very being - will mercifully die off and those of sober mind will be in a position to hand over the ultimate verdict on the Trump Presidency ...1st term _and_ 2nd if the republic can hold on long enough to withstand the continued punishing effects of the current regime's Usurpation of our executive branch in order to make it to a fairly run, by-and-large, even-handed 2024 election
Trump only cared about his own ambitions and jeopardized our democracy and constitution because of it! He was and still is a threat to the future of America and what it stands for!
I don't know what the original air date for this episode is however it is not November of 1968 because Richard Nixon had just won the presidential election a few days earlier
Nixon sabotaged the 1968 peace talks to get elected and then secretly bombed SE Asia for years. He didn’t get us out of Vietnam…last troops left under Ford, almost 7 years after Nixon was elected!
The man who opened up China to the world economy. Also the first President I voted for. I still think he was a much better President then anyone we have had the last several elections.
Nixon honestly wasn’t that bad of a president. Unfortunately, pretty much all of the good things that happened under his presidency are overshadowed by the Watergate scandal.
Nixon loved to compare himself with Abe Lincoln. If I could have asked him a single question it would have been this. Why was the public's nickname for Lincoln Honest Abe and for you it was Tricky Dick?
Absolutely amazing how classy people were treated on late night TV back then and how classy the press was. Not many people know this but Nixon was actually a VERY good diplomat and president until he suffered a mental or nervous breakdown after Watergate.
