- Amber Smith served as a U.S. Army OH-58D Kiowa Warrior helicopter pilot and air mission commander in the 101st Airborne Division. She flew two tours in Iraq and Afghanistan and recently served as Deputy Assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Outreach in Public Affairs.

What an amazingly courageous and dedicated woman. Loved her book, read it twice. It helped me to better understand that courage isn't gender specific -- she totally busts the notion of beautiful, feminine women possessing lesser courage than most men. Good on the army for giving her the opportunity to prove that. Thanks for your service, Amber!

No direct connection to the military myself, grandparents were service members but not myself. Astounded by these heros. The stories blow me away. What a beautiful woman on the inside and outside. Truly blessed person in all aspects and hands down impressed with her. Showed my 8 year old daughter this video and told her she could be anything she wants to be in life. Inspirational to say the least. Thank you Amber

Small world indeed…White Salmon, I went to school there (class 84). Joined the Army and did combat tours in Desert Storm, Afghanistan and Iraq. Retired in 09 as a LTC. Salute!

April 2004 Baqubah Iraq I had seen a Kiowa get shot down. Hard landing but they both made it. There was a female pilot or co. Qrf from our position provided security.

When I, was stationed at Ft Bliss Texas in 1996 getting ready to go to EOD school we responded to an aircraft crash when 2 OH/58D helicopters collided with each other during night maneuvers killing 3 of the four pilots.Also had OH/58D cover our route clearance convoy in Afghanistan in 2009.
Was she overly concerned with what the enemy would do to a western woman if she crashed or fell into their hands. God it would have been horrible.
Only question I have is how did her grandfather fight at Verdun as an LT for the US army?
The United States did not declare its participation in the Great War until 1917, however some unofficial assistance from was already being provided for the Allies by the start of Verdun. ... In Verdun, nearly 2,500 AFS volunteers
In 1918 the US fought through Verdun as part to the Argonne Offensive. Not “called” Verdun, but the same area.
