    The sling under the cat's belly is handmade/cut from a piece of non-stretch material with Velcro straps. The front harness (around the cat's shoulders and neck) is a Ferret Harness sold at Petco and other places online.

    I have a paralized cat and I didnt build a walker. He learned to manage on his own under my supervision and support. He started out not being able to stand and could only drag his back legs. He would go to the walls and furniture and learn to balance himself.I would place his food and water in his favorite standing spot and he would eat at first laying down but now standing. He has other family cats that he plays with and a pomeranian that grooms him and mothers him. All the other animals know that hes special and they love and support him too. He is happy and playful and very affectionate. Every friday is bath day. I lay towels i the tub because it makes him feel comfortable and safe. He is use to his baths and afterword I lay with him in my bed for the night and he nozzles and purrs against me. He is the sweetest cat I have ever had. I really wanted to say that it is hard to watch tnem drag themselves but it helps them to build strength and learn how to use their limbs and tail to balance. He is 8 months old and is able to walk about 30 ft now and use a low walled cat box. He walks with his tail used for balance with his back legs a little further apart than usual. His back legs are builts up and very strong. I just hope this helps someone out there who may be dealing with this. If you give the cat time he will develop a way to walk naturally.

      Your cat is lucky to have you as an owner. Paralysis comes in many forms and severity. Some forms can be overcome, some not so much. Many of the 700+ correspondences I have had with people who want to build the walker are for kittens diagnosed with cerebellar hypoplasia. Not technically paralysis, but an underdeveloped part of the brain that controls motor skills and coordination. The brain is very resilient and versatile. If given the opportunity, the brain will re-route signals to the legs to learn how to walk, but without balance, the leg muscles can atrophy and further hamper any chance of walking. The physical therapy walker in my video gives the cat that little extra support so that it can partially support its own weight and to use it's legs to gain muscle strength, so that over time, it may be able to walk again. I have received many success stories from around the world. For more permanent paralysis or nerve damage, there are other better-suited wheelchairs available. The walker in my video certainly is not the answer to all special needs pets.

    Wonderful idea! I have an elderly cat who recently suffered an ear infection that permanently threw off her balance. She gets around alright in the house most of the time, but not so well when we go out to play in the garden! I am gonna try this idea with some large wheels, so she has an easier time. Thank you so much for sharing!

    An excellent video. Even though I have a 14 year old German Shepherd who'll be using a hind-wheelchair, this video was extremely useful for me because I've never used PVC in my life before. It helped me understand a few things, and for that I'm grateful.
    Also, it's wonderful to meet someone who's as dedicated to their pets as you are :)

    I just found a cat yesterday and he has one leg paralyzed and no strength at all in his 'good' back leg. I'm going to build one of this for him :) so far I am helping him holding the harness with my hand and he seems to be happy when he is able to move easier and faster, so I guess that he would love this. Thanks for sharing!!

    I can't thank you enough. I was drawing out plans to make my own and I found this link on google. My cat is year and half old, had a bad reaction to a flea & tick collar, which triggered a stroke. It has been almost 3 months and she has made a tremendous comeback but has partial paralysis and will not try to stand or walk. With the aid of this walker, along with food.. she will learn.

    thank you for your video. Its nice of you to try teach people how to make a walker for their kitty. Some times kittens do actually improve or recover. If not, the important thing is how good life is for the animal. Having it put to death is not a solution.

    My cat was poisoned by an Ortho pesticide 4 days ago. At first, over half of his body was paralysed. On the first day he was fed activated charcoal with pedialyte to detoxify his body.
    He won't eat on his own so he is hand fed with a syringe, he has pedialyte and suppliments that are helping his nerves to recover. He can already lift his feet to his head and wiggle his tail. He does therapy on a small ball that supports his body while his legs and feet are getting exercise. I plan to build this walker for him so he can be more mobile.
    Thank you so much for making this video.

    • @hoc31rescue
      @hoc31rescue  8 лет назад

      +Happy Puss I am sorry to hear of your cat's heart disease. I too, have seen cats that have experienced the development of a blood clot (aortic thromboembolism) which usually forms in the heart and travels through the blood stream. Most commonly, the clot lodges at the branch of the aorta that feeds the back legs, shutting down blood flow and causing partial or complete paralysis.

    If you use Dr. Bronner epsom salt products, the bags I get usually come with a great velcro like closure that feels the same on both sides. I usually get this epsom salt primarily to remove those and save them for projects. I love it that they feel the same on both side. These could probably easily be repurposed in an item like this. You could also probably 3d print some of the framework to make it lighter and more customized than the pvc.

    • @hoc31rescue
      @hoc31rescue  6 лет назад

      Thanks for the velcro option idea

    • @artistpw
      @artistpw 6 лет назад

      I meant to say Dr. Teals epsom salts. The vecro is really the same on both sides. Also, you can bend pvc with hot sand and a nail form in something like plywood if you make a lot of these. Might save a bit of money if you don't need as many joint pieces.

    Awesome!!! :D My cousin has a four-week old kitten. His legs are virtually dead, and he rarely has any control over his bowels. However, we're still hoping that he will be able to walk on all fours again with therapy. His spine has also been injured. We'd prolly need a much more tinier wheelchair tho heheh.

    • @hoc31rescue
      @hoc31rescue  8 лет назад +2

      +Shay Grey The walker could probably be scaled down a bit, but it has successfully been used with 8 week old kittens. My apologies for the late reply - I did not see your comment until now. This walker is made from 1/2 inch diameter PVC (plastic pipe). I do not believe it to be sturdy enough to support a mid-size dog. The walker could possibly be built with larger diameter pipe to be made stronger, but I have never tried. I have build a 2-wheel walker for a 40 pound dog. There are many videos available showing how to build a similar 2-wheel walker. Can the harness be adjusted for a 6-wk old as she grows or do we need to scale down the whole walker? Your video is awesome. I've been looking for the perfect walker for this kitten and you came to my rescue.

    • @hoc31rescue
      @hoc31rescue  8 лет назад

      +Danni Smith As long as you can adjust the harness to fit the kitten (purchase small sizes or modify the harness to fit), you should not need to scale down the walker.  The length of the straps that suspend the harness and the sling can easily be adjusted (I used large clips used for thick paperwork).  It was necessary to make minor adjustments to the strap length ONLY to allow the cat to partially support its own weight for exercise and balance.

    My cat just underwent spinal surgery on Friday. She is currently paralyzed but is very, very slowly regaining movement in back leg(s) with the help of leg stimulation and physio therapy excercises. We are 100% going to make one of these to help her in her recovery.
    Quick question for you though. In the modified cart seen at the beginning and end of the video where you have the cross bar on top of the cart, did you just use a cat harness to hold your kitten up and "tie" her to that cross bar on the cart? The harness in the video that you made is simply square with velcro tabs and a few fabric loops. It does not show what you did after for the bit attached to the front of the cart. Either way, thank you for posting! Cannot wait to get this started!

    • @hoc31rescue

      The 'loops' are short pieces of the same material as the support straps. I sewed the two ends of the short pieces directly to the sling, thereby creating a loop for the support straps.

    I have 3-4 (one shows signs but not sure) that have ch 1 was really bad and could hardly walk and now walks like he never had it and then vets say that you should put them down when these beautiful cats are learning to balance themselves out and the same mother of the 2 older ones had a batch about 5 weeks ago and another 1 has really bad ch and she hopefully learns to walk like my other 2

    • @hoc31rescue
      @hoc31rescue  7 лет назад

      Yes, unfortunately too many people think euthanasia should be performed, when often the cat only needs love and patience and a helping hand. Cerebellar Hypoplasia is most commonly caused by the kitten’s mother contracting the Panleukopenia virus while pregnant. If the mother passes on the virus during the end of pregnancy, the kittens can be born with CH. I hope the momma cat can be captured and spayed before she has more litters.

    We recently adopted 3 CH kitties and the most severe case we made one of these for him. About how long does it take for them to become accustomed to it? Ours wouldn’t move for awhile and he seemed pretty freaked out. Any advice is welcomed, we just want them to be happy and be able to live a happy life. Thank you!

    • @hoc31rescue
      @hoc31rescue  Год назад +1

      Cats are kinda like people - every one is different. Some just do not like change and others quickly realize that with the walker, they can move about more easily. Kittens seem to adjust to the walker faster than adult cats. I always recommend that you should get the kitten/cat accustomed to the sight, sounds and smell of the walker first. I suggest putting the front harness and body sling in your pocket for a day or two just so that those items now smell like you. Then put the collar/harness and the body sling in the kitten’s bed while it sleeps to get use to the feel of the material. I also suggest playing with the kittens near the walker so that the contraption (and its associated smells and noise (while rolling)) become familiar to the kittens. When the kitten in the walker, distract her/him with a feather toy or treats. Time in the walker should be PLAYTIME. Make it fun for the kitten. If the kitten is not liking it then take her out and start the process over again. Be patient. The walker is for therapy and the kitten should never be left unattended in the walker. I always suggest very short periods of time in the walker, multiple times a day… with lots of rewards of snuggles and hugs.

    Hello, My cat is a big cat he has a broken leg. The fron right leg, it is an awesome idea for my cat but I am wondering... How he can poo or pee? I wish you will respond to this. BTW i loved your video😁👍

    • @hoc31rescue
      @hoc31rescue  4 года назад +1

      My apologies for my delayed response. I did not receive the usual alert of your comment and only just today saw the comment. The walker should work for a front leg disability. You asked about normal body functions..... I would not recommend allowing a pet to use the walker unattended for any long period of time. This is a physical therapy walker and meant to be used as an exercise tool. Your pet would be unable to perform normal body functions while using the walker (I believe most walker/wheelchairs are not capable of facilitating such body functions). If your cat's leg is in a cast, then he should be able to get around fairly well. I recently had a cat with a broken back leg in a splint/wrap. The oversized wrap/splint barely slowed him down. You alright there .
    Will this work for 3 week old kitten at all .
    Keep up the good work .

    • @hoc31rescue
      @hoc31rescue  5 лет назад

      A 3 week old kitten is still very small. Eyes are fully open, ears are erect, teeth are becoming visible. Kittens this age are just starting to walk and will be very wobbly and only weigh 8 to 12 ounces. Not until 4 or 5 weeks will kittens begin to pounce and leap.
      Do you know for sure that your little kitten has a disability? Does the kitten have deformed legs? The walker in my video is probably too large for such a small kitten. It is possible to scale down the walker using smaller materials, but a 3 week old kitten may not have the strength to move the cart. You may wish to start by using a long narrow piece of soft cloth slung under the kitten's belly and held by you as you walk with the kitten to help it gain balance. If you will send an email to me at hoc.288lives@yahoo.com I can send to you additional instructions and photos of how to build the walker.

      Thanks for your reply . Unfortunately there is definately something wrong with her . She is a lot smaller than her brothers and sister who are walking fine . She falls to her side after a step or too and her back legs are very uncoordinated . Bought formula kitten milk and bottles to try to give her more food in the hope its just cause shes small and not feeding enough . Will try the sling idea and see how she gets on . If no change i will email you for the walker instructions . I want to try to give her every chance i can to be as normal as possible . Thank you for your time and i am glad there are people like you that doesnt give up on them . Thanks again .

    • @hoc31rescue
      @hoc31rescue  5 лет назад

      Your kitten is still very young. She may be just slow to develop, or if she is showing signs of uncoordinated balance and walking, she may have a condition called "cerebellar hypoplasia".
      Feline cerebellar hypoplasia is a non-progressive, non-contagious neurological condition that results in walking and balance problems.
      A kitten is born with CH when her cerebellum, the part of the brain that controls fine motor skills and coordination, is underdeveloped at birth.
      A cerebellum’s growth can be stunted by a number of factors, most commonly if the mother contracted the feline panleukopenia virus while pregnant or if there was some sort of trauma to the kittens while they were in the womb.
      Unless a CH cat has other health issues, her life expectancy is the same as a cat’s without CH. Since the condition is non-progressive, it will never get worse and in some cases, owners say that their cat became more capable over time. Here is a link to good information..... lifewithchcats.com/what-is-cerebellar-hypoplasia/

      The frame is made from plastic pipe. The plastic pipe and associated fittings are typically found in most household hardware / home improvement stores and used in home construction for plumbing drain pipe and some water lines. It is also used in the United States for landscape irrigation. In some countries the PVC pipe and fittings are not white in color, but available in blue (water pipe) and orange (electric) or green. Greetings brothers, we are going through a situation with a kitten exactly like the one in the video, it has problems with its hind legs, it has been lying down for 14 days, it has a lot of pain, the vet has given it several medications and they do not even know what it has but it worries me that his legs become too weak and irreversible from being lying down for so long we saw your video and the question is where they sell that blue vest that has suspenders and what name does it have Please help us

    • @hoc31rescue
      @hoc31rescue  2 года назад

      Cristal,
      So sorry to hear about your kitten. (if you will please contact me via email at hoc.288lives@yahoo.com I will forward to you a list of materials, additional photos and a brief description of the walker build and how I used the sling and harness).
      I will try to respond to your immediate concerns in this post. Apologies if this is long…
      The kitten in the video was diagnosed with Cerebellar hypoplasia (CH). Cerebellar hypoplasia is a congenital condition in which the cerebellum of the brain fails to develop properly. The cerebellum is the portion of the brain that controls fine motor skills, balance, and coordination. The condition is not painful or contagious or progressive. It occurs most commonly when a pregnant cat becomes infected with feline panleukopenia, virus and it passes to her unborn kittens.
      ….That was a long description but I wanted you to know that it is a condition that is inherited from the mother cat. The condition is NOT painful to the cat and does not typically worsen. You said your kitten was in pain.
      I am concerned that your kitten is exhibiting the symptoms of a Saddle Thrombus. A thrombus is a clot that forms in the bloodstream (typically forms in the heart). When it’s dislodged from the heart and enters the aorta it ends up burying into the bifurcation of this large artery as it branches off into the smaller arteries that supply blood to the hind limbs. When it gets stuck it’s now called an embolism. The result in the case of a saddle thrombus (an embolism at the base of the aorta) is that it cuts off the blood supply--mostly to the back legs, which is an extremely painful condition. I don’t mean to scare you, and it seems unlikely that a kitten would have a blood clot, but you may want to ask your vet. Did your vet perform an X-ray to look for spinal injuries?
      The Harness: The kitten in the video is wearing a “Ferret Walking Harness” which can be found at most pet stores and online shopping such as Amazon.com. www.amazon.com/ferret-harness/s?k=ferret+harness
      This harness fits around the front shoulders and chest/neck and allows the kitten to “pull” the walker. The blue harness that wraps around the kitten’s mid-section and supports the kitten’s body. I made this sling using available materials sewn in a size to fit the kitten. If you will email me at hoc.288lives@yahoo.com, I will share with you the instructions and measurements for this sling.

      Your pet should NEVER be left unattended in the walker and should not be in the walker for long periods of time. A pet with special needs may need help when using a walker or a wheel chair. The wheel chair could become stuck in a corner or in household furniture and the pet would be unable to extract itself. Always stay with your pet when using any type of wheel chair device.

      Rhonda, you may contact me at hoc288lives@yahoo.com for more information. But please understand that this walker may likely not work well for front-leg paralysis. Modifications would probably be needed to essentially support the entire body equally so that the cat could push with its hind legs. This walker 'might' work, but the cat's ability to steer may be hampered a bit.

    • @hoc31rescue
      @hoc31rescue  5 лет назад

      The walker performs best on a hard, flat surface. It probably would not work well on rough, uneven ground or in grass. It is not recommended that the pet be in the walker unattended as its purpose is to gently support the pet to help regain balance and strength. There are many other wheelchair designs available online that are made for pets with more permanent paralysis and are better suited for outdoor use. I hope this answers your question.

      I wanna ask you about my cat case, his backbone was broken,has no sense at all in his legs and tail so my question is this wheelchair good for his case?

    • @hoc31rescue
      @hoc31rescue  3 года назад +1

      @@aregeyehia4170 ......The walker in my video is designed to partially support the cat's weight, and allow the cat to use it's rear legs to "walk". If your cat has severe nerve damage and is unable to use it's legs, my design may not be the best. It may be ok, but there are other designs that would be better. The best design would be a small, lightweight, 2-wheel cart / wheelchair. I have seen simple designs online that could be built easily. And I have seen some for sale that are not too expensive. I could share some information with you, but RUclips does not allow me to post photos here in the comment section. If you have more questions, you can contact me at hoc.288lives@yahoo.com. I do not retain or share any contact information from people who send emails to me. I will not use your contact information other than to respond to you. hi, do you selll them? there is no way I can build one myself :(

    • @hoc31rescue
      @hoc31rescue  9 лет назад +1

      Surgarcube700, no, I am sorry but I do not sell the walkers. I was approached by a local cat rescue organization that needed a wheelchair for one of their rescues. Commercially available wheelchairs were far too expensive, so I built this inexpensive walker and posted the video so that others could also build for themselves. The walker is very easy to build and many people around the world have corresponded with me; sending me photos of their build. The materials are readily available at local hardware stores and no special tools are needed. If you will contact me at stac91hoc@yahoo.com, I will gladly send to you a detailed list of materials, photographs and some additional information on the build. I can walk you through the process if you are willing to give it a try.

      +sugarcube700 If you are still looking for one of these, or a different model, I decided after making a couple for a friend who has a cat that needs therapy that I would like to make the frames for my cost plus shipping as a service to cat lovers that have needs. I do not make the slings, since that is more specific, and not where my skills lie.
      Let me know. I have built this person's larger version for an adult cat, and could easily make this kitten model... I have also built a different style that a guy named Leon has posted on RUclips a couple of years ago.

      Thank you very much. How much do you think it would be? I live in Israel.
      The thing is that my can is more than a year old, and I doubt if she'll ever walk again, it's been almost a year since she was run over by a car, and she won't bend her back legs :(

      sugarcube700, I will forward your comment/question to Darwin Gregory. I suspect you are correct regarding the prognosis of your cat. A year of immobility would likely result in neuropathy and muscle loss in the legs.
