Hi there! I didn't watch the video entirely cause I didn't finish the book yet, but I was surprised about how you see Mr. Darcy (and about how everyone else does)! When I started reading it I had this idea that he was actually written like an awkward introvert (I'll get further about it in a second), but it seems like I was just biased by a part of the fandom 🙆 So from what I understand, he really is meant to be a huge as*hole that learns from his mistakes and get nicer or something like that??? But here's my interpretation (which I thought was the right one 🤡) : Mr. Darcy is a socially awkward introvert who struggle with human interaction. As someone who kind of has the same problem, my personal behaviour when encountering a social situation is to stay distant and say as little as possible, so people don't come to me or just to not get embarrassed. If one's actually starts a conversation, I will blush, speak fast and say dumb and basic shits (sometimes I even lie), because I don't know how to handle it and I don't want to. Looking distant and cold also became a part of my personality, as in I'm trying to keep those traits even when I'm more confortable in a situation (idk why tho). I think the same thing is happening to Mr. Darcy, except that, instead of just blushing and stuttering like me, he'll be rude. And I mean, his technic kinda works since people don't really want to talk him again. And to me, the reason why he's acting like an ass when talking about other people is because of the social position he is in (y'know, wealthy Victorian people shit) (like he has to look smart and observant, to have opinions on things, to look cool idk) (is my point even clear I'm sorry I'm struggling sm at writing rn) Also I believe a character said he acts nicely around people he knows well, like he talks a lot and all that shit, which made sense to me because I'm the exact same Anyways, I lost myself, all that to say that I interpreted Mr. Darcy completely differently because it worked for me, either to be able to kin on one of the characters or because it made sense when I was reading Sorry for this mess, I should finish the book :') (and this vid!) Byeee (PS : I'm currently discovering you channel and I love it! Especially with the fact you put subtitles, it makes it easier for a non-english speaking native like me :'))
Hi there! Thanks so much for your comment, I love reading long ones like this haha. I'm not sure how far into the book you are so I'll caution you that there may be spoilers if you keep reading but basically, there's no one way to interpret characters. If you see Mr Darcy's behaviour as a product of social awkwardness and there's proof in the text to support this, then have at it. I don't even disagree with this entirely. He definitely seems to struggle with large, social gatherings and isn't interested in making small talk or getting to know people he's not personally interested in. (I think his portrayal in the 2005 film also leans into this part of his character a lot more lol). However, he's shown to be arrogant and haughty because of his class and the class of Elizabeth and her family. When he proposes to her the first time, he doesn't even consider that she'll say no, because in his mind he's marrying down and she's marrying up. When she does refuse him he gets quite angry and insults her. This would be the 'pride and prejudice' aspect to Pride and Prejudice. At the end of the book he explains that he was raised to think of money and class and the be-all end-all of a person, and that because of his class/wealth he was inherently better than most people. It's only when he practices humility and is nice to Elizabeth and her poorer relatives that he's able to win her favour. Elizabeth also has to recognise that she jumped to conclusions and believed the worst in Darcy because she was biased against him. They both have to change and overcome their flaws to find their way to each other! That's what makes them a great couple imo. I'm glad the subtitles were helpful for you! Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoy P&P :)
