During the gearing up scene, he flips a Mossberg 500 upside-down and only loads three rounds into the tube without loading the chamber first. That's exactly half of what that version of that gun holds in toto (five in the tube plus one in the chamber if using standard 2.75" shells). Gotta wonder if that's what gave rise to the myth that all 12-gauge pump shotguns only hold three rounds. We never see chamber-loading being done in movies or TV shows. 'Mr. Inbetween' is an exception. The reason I mention this is because I expect more from Arnie given his military background.
7:56 HK94 playing the role of an MP5A3 just like in Die Hard. That one has a heatshield and a foregrip. The heatshield is probably to fancy up the barrel since it's converted from a semi-auto carbine into a full-auto "poor man's MP5." More practical for movie-making logistics. Converting an HK94, I mean, not adding that useless stuff to the front end of the gun.
8:19 Right?! No thought given to tactics. Just pure '80s hipfire with the wave-the-gun-back-and-forth "technique."
8:32 Notice how he's reloading "wrong-handed" (using the shootin' hand instead of the support hand). Whoever told him to do that was an idiot. Or whoever didn't tell him not to do that was an idiot. He was a tank driver in the Austrian Army in the 1960s, so he'd had small arms training since before he was in movies. They probably trained him on "techniques" that we'd consider to be obsolete now. No one does "wrong-handed" reloads anymore. And there's especially no reason to do that with an H&K classic (regardless of decade).

Nice to hear your reflection on Raw Deal. It has some fun action sequences and it's great seeing Arnold in those stylish suits, but unfortunately Raw Deal was definitely a step down from Commando. Luckily for Arnold he bounced back with his next film Predator. Stay Gold, Australia's Retro Man.

Completely agree. Its fun to watch now but certainly not as splashy as his other flicks from the era. Thanks for watching!

Tired to here complains over the script and plot of Raw Deal. Thats seems thats the biggest argument why this is a bad movie. Yet the script and plot with the other Arnold movies are not questioning? So i guess the only reason this is a bad movie is that Terminator, Predator, Commando and Red Heat are so well written and have so great stories?

I think the main issue people had with Raw Deal was its limboing between what it wanted to be. It tried to be a mob themed crime drama. But at the same time it wanted to be a straightforward action movie since Arnold was blowing up at the time. Since he was still on the rise to being a star there were still people who wanted to see another full throttle Arnold action movie. But instead it was an organized crime movie that cut into an action movie. So there wasn't really enough action to satisfy that side of the audience. Then for those okay with the organized crime plot found it a bit thin and too slowly paced.
But it's also a movie that has aged well over the years as the mindset of viewers going into is it different now.

Thanks for reviewing and exploring this much forgotten film with us! It has zero on Commando or Total Recall (which are my big Arnie favorites) but still can be fun and makes an impression.

Could you review the Death Wish series with Charles Bronson (up until part 4, anyway), bud? That would be so awesome. I'm a huge fan of those films.

Raw Deal in my opinion seemed like the type of film that cannon films would’ve produced in their B movie action schlock catalog. It has a simple premise, the villains are gleefully campy and cartoon like, and it seems like a role fitting for an actor like Charles Bronson.
But I guess the filmmakers just wanted to make the next Commando and profit off of Arnie’s success at the time.
Not that this is a bad film, I think it’s actually kind of fun. Sure it’s a by the numbers film, but it’s like going to a restaurant. Some people would rather order a burger and beer instead of a 5 star steak with wine.

I agree it has its charm and plenty of nostalgia but not as strong as he other 80s gems.

You compair with Commando and say Raw Deal is simple? Yeah you are right. I love the script in Commando, it has a real depth to it. Commando are almost a drama 😀
