- Welcome to HVAC with John Israel RUclips Channel. On this channel I Bring you along on HVAC Service calls, HVAC Installs, HVAC Maintenance and pretty much anything else HVAC related. Enjoy and thanks for watching.
Coil looks like it’s flexing 💪🏼 in the thumbnail
Nordyne has had issues with ECM blower motors intermittently shutting off. I had one freezing up like that and couldn’t ever catch while I was there. Call Nordyne tech support and they can tell from the date code on the motor if it’s in the range of motors they have had issues with. 👍
Nice repair John 👍 I'm with you on just throwing a piston in, these people have had enough problems already with their AC & like you said with it being a mobile home, & a 14 Seer unit they won't notice a difference besides the fact their AC will be working properly now. You earned a customer for life & whoever they tell their situation to will bring more business to you. Great video bro 👍
Mr. Israel don't let those I'm the best tech guys tell you your wrong yes does drop efficiency a slight bit but not the amount that's going to cost more then recooling the whole house each day,
the valves today are junk and not worth a crap because manufactures are counting pennies.
you are a good service tech. i would have done the same for the unit, you do you stay safe.
I have a 15 year old Ruud that had a TXV and never worked worth a crap. I had my pro in Lafayette put a piston. Now works great!
Miss Molly said you did great !!
Nothing wrong with putting a piston in this unit. Don’t listen to the people talking trash just block them and don’t give them time to even talk about them. Wish I could work with a tech like you and Iv been doing hvacr work since 1987. Take care 👍🇺🇸
Nice repair John...keep those video coming...we learn a lot from you.. Thanks.
I've been doing this for 20 years and learn or relearn something new every day. I wasn't sure what you said about the fan but I would probably would have leaned towards air flow. Something intermittently keeping the fan from coming on. I have changed plenty of fan relays when everything was still working when I get there. It's a process of elimination. It freezes for one of three reasons:
1.) Refrigerant charge low
2.) Liquid line restriction
3.) Air flow
So, if what you did does not work then you have to go to number 3 being air flow. Whether fan relay sometimes dropping out or thermostat not sending 24v sometimes. I wanted to thank you for helping me to learn and relearn something new every day. See you on the next one.
I have seen contactor stick as well....rare but it happens.
John, you did the right thing, you only gain 1/2 to a SEER POINT by using a TXV. With a mobile home unit mixed matched equipment I would have done the same thing.
I'm happy you are posting again! It makes me think TXV, or supply vents closed. That is funny about the freeze stat below...
If the TXV is the issue, the piston is just fine, you don't lose that much efficiency and its tried and true
We do the same exact thing where I work. I’ve changed txvs and the new one goes bad within a couple years. Piston corrects ever having to fool with those devil things again, if it’s the right situation to use a piston like you had. Good video.
First call sub cooling was low those units usually need about 8-13° subcool. Your subcool was at 3 when you first hooked. Low subcool low refrigerant. Now another thing is i wouldve checked restriction on filter dyer. I would check temp one side of dyer and the other side of dyer to see if theres cange in temp. Also txv may be clogged would be last option. I wouldve put an adjustable txv as last option. Also airflow can be a issue too. I would do static pressure test with phsycrometer. Airflow restriction will make coil freeze. Be thorough with your service calls before changing refrigeration parts. Dont be a parts changer but a be a person that fixes the system not a part. If you do that you wont have call backs
Good job started watching your videos they are great learn a lot
Don't let the haters get to you, John. Anyone who watches your channel knows that you are a conscientious tech who takes good care of his customers. Anyone who wants to split hairs over how you provide service can just go blow. The piston was the right call.
Great Job. As long as it work, and the customer is happy
Nice work. Customer satisfaction is part of the job. I always follow up with mine and they like that.
Thanks for the video glad you back hope all is well be safe
New in the industry. Thanks for showing your skills.
Would’ve done the same thing brother 👍 just to be on the safe side. Nothing but respect
I had a similar unit with the same issue. It ended up being that the TXV got dismounted off of the suction line and was halfway dipped into the condensate drain. The company that had installed the equipment strapped the TXV bulb onto the suction line with plastic ties. The reason it had suddenly began freezing was because the TXV bulb was hanging into the condensate drain pan and as soon as that drain clogged, the water completely froze over the TXV bulb and evaporator. All I had to do was restrap the TXV bulb onto the line and insulate it correctly .
I have ran across that problem many times...many was the problems you checked for...many was stopped up air filter or coil....and a couple times I found plastic bags in the evaporator coil
John is back 🇺🇸
We ought to just have pistons in every unit
I never saw a mobile home that would actually move enough air to efficiently run 4 tons with a TXV ....Regardless of that, I hate those intermittent issues.....I would probably be telling the customer please not to turn it off and let us see it in it's "errored" state..... we can still feel as if we are chasing a ghost.... and yes you did cost them about 3 or 4 dollars a month by going to a piston. LOL
But saved them on the repair bills of a TXV and all the issues they bring
@@jaybird9391 Yes, I would have changed out txv to piston and elimnate that possiblity. But I do know that Nordyne has had issues with ecm's in the past
John, great video thx for the hard work.
Screw those opinions man. U take care of the customer first plain and simple. I love what u do John big fan I've talked to u a couple times im still waiting on a shirt from ya though
The only thing the TXV does well is under varying conditions. A Mobil home is using AC only when it’s hot outside.
John, great video. Just wanted to let you know that I have stolen this repair you do with the removal of a Bad TXV, and replacing with a piston. So, thanks for the Tech tip!
super cool video bro, good job
Your right, txv's are not reliable as they use to be. I would switch out a bad valve for a piston any day, so your not alone. Great video once again!
Excuse me first of all I want to thank you for your videos I am learning and I was confused with the subcoling of this video
I enjoy your content Israel... I enjoy learning...
Isn’t there an orifice in there for the multi circuit distributor? Its missing!!!
Lmao you are funny and a cool guy keep up the good work
I’m in between Beaumont and Houston Texas and I find a lot of mobile homes around here straight from the manufacturer that do not have enough air flow from the start. Especially up flow systems. We have had to cut additional filter grills in and it has helped tremendously. We would have trouble getting super heat and sub cooling correct before hand
I truly enjoy the content bubba....keep up the good work
A satisfied customer says it all. And you did that. Great job.
? John can u use a piston on a micro channel condensor.
Chris Simmons he did in this video!!!
Nice job keep up the great work thanks for the video
you keep it real, thanks for the post.
Gr8 job
Great video like you said sometimes you just got to do what it takes to fix it .nice job 😊
Check that the vents are open. Steve had one they had all the vents closed except one.
Could also try putting a freeze stat on the indoor coil. You’ll never be back for a freeze up again!
That’s what I would do ! Bet you that txv was fine. He just hates txv's for some reason
Honeywell 2 wire TROLATEMP part #:FPC cuts out @ 38 degrees & cut-in @ 48 degrees.
Wired to break Y, I've never been back to a call that was freezing the coil (WHAT A PITA TO DE-ICE COIL & NOT MAKE A MESS).
I've had to return due to failed intermittent blower, low gas/leaker calls, & failed TXVs, but I've not had to deal w/ iced coils when 1 of those was installed.
Have had 4 TXV from Rheem malfunction on me in 1 day on 1 call. I said fuck it and put a piston in. It was a 14 seer. Haven't had issues out of it since. Great minds think alike John
How do you know what Piston to use
NDS Mudlogger would you know the answer? I’m trying to determine what is the right piston to put in if I remove the TXV
The filter could definitely be too thick and restricting airflow.
Marcus Mitchell
My old system would freeze up when my wife closed half the supply vents. 4 tons seems like a lot for that mobile home. Restricted air flow might do it.
Nice repair
One thing I have learn over the years is all those people want is for it to be fix right and not to break down.
Unrelated to HVAC. Stay safe through this storm!!!
Maybe she's using heavy duty filters, and she should use the cheap filters for good air flow.
We have all been there . Those are tough . Maybe duct work or return size
Nice work buddy!
John. You opened the refrigerant circuit to atmospheric conditions and you did not change the liquid line filter drier.
Don't trivialize the importance of changing those John. They can only hold so much moisture, and you don't know how the installer did his job. By the way an evacuation will not separate the moisture from the drier. At least that's what Sporlan says
An Air conditioner is an Air conditioner 💯👍👍 it's gonna cool the house down either way. Great job 👍 keep doing what you do. Ignore the haters 🤣
Good 1 John ...
I would check all the supply vents for flow. Seems to be over-sized too.
Considering most returns in mobile homes are undersized to begin with.. I would check return and supplies making sure all are open..... not knowing what size home that one is, A 32×80 home 3 1/2 ton is usually the norm and I have never seen more than 3 1/2 in a mobile home .
Left the piston in the truck... LOL... Story of my life...
❤❤
They changed those electric furnaces. You have to set the dip switches on the circuit board for the correct air flow. I hope this helps.😜
Good enough for that neighborhood
I’ve had people want to keep all the doors closed and turn off a couple of vents and that will do it. I’ve also had a fan so dirty it caused it to freeze up. I can’t imagine the fan being that dirty on this house as that video when it was new was just a few months ago.
I don’t have a problem with a piston on a 13 or 14 seer a unit. I haven’t had a piston fail yet. That said I have seen a couple of people diagnose a bad TXV and a new one didn’t help.
It about taking care of the customer
New to your channel love it you do it right take pride in your work and the customer as well god bless stay safe
Hey man... Love your videos...
I've been on a call or two where the cheap stat they put on those trailers didn't work for shit lol...
Yeah I’d be checking static pressure/airflow. How’s the Delta T? Hard to say without being there of course.
The bottom line is simple.
Is the customer satisfied?
It looks like to me that it could have been the TXV sticking.
If the fan it good and the contractors is ok, I would check the TXV. I’m curious to know what the sub cooling and suction superheat at the evaporator
hey John good video as always, just out of curiosity how do you know what size piston to install when replacing a txv,is there a chart that you use or something? please share thanks
Hey baldy usually, I think they're rated for the tonnage and refrigerant type
I was wondering why you did not suspect a low charge when you had suction pressures like 103-104 you were dealing with when you came back. That and duct restrictions in that kind of house.
I'm thinking if the blower was running, perhaps it was running but at low enough RPMs to facilitate freezing
Just by the picture of frozen coil looks like missing refrigerant or tex valve shuting down
Screw the SEER rating it's a Nordyne lol, piston n go,Good Job in my opinion
Good job jhon 👍 give a tool for HVAC plz
Check thermostat, had a customer wire y1 wire on o terminal in thermostat. Had it like that for 2 years and said never froze until this year which I find odd.
Why would that make it freeze?
You say it's a 4 ton unit moble home ducting is designed for 2 ton . Your choking the unit and the blower can not push enough air threw the coil s and they freeze up
Mr. John I had one just like that one a week ago I didn’t find no issues 🤷🏾♂️ and told the customer to call me if it does it again and still I haven’t heard anything from that customer yet
Probably be back to change the ECM module soon enough
high humidity in house she call it freezing cause the out side of the evaporator sweating check fan speed and supply vents are open
U da man !!
How long are those micro coils on the last those things are junk I can't believe they still make some big mistake
Surprised you had service valves on that condenser! I hate cheap mobile home condensers because 95% of the units i service never have service valves so you have to completely recover the charge in the system for repairs.
Could it be a possibility with the compressor shutting off. I’ve been to calls where I checked everything and after a while of just watching the unit I would catch the compresser turning on and off at times.
Hello John on a 410A system what are the cut in and cut out for a fan cycling they are using it in a server room.
I would of looked for txv on that thing. Had the same thing happen on a crapping out txv. I guess I spoke too early
mobile, home vents in floor? probably closed or covered half of them up, even if attic/ceiling. also 4 tons for a mobile home, just how big is that thing?
Just wondering , how big is this mobile home ? 4 ton seems a bit big for a mobile I have 1500square feet of living space and a 3 ton system and I don't freeze up like that . Just wondering ?
Are TXV's worth the trouble? I had a unit in my home that would never work right. I had my pro gut that stupid TXV and put a piston. All good now.
I have never seen a mobil home big enough to move 4 tons of cooling air
I believe the system is way oversized
Did you check static pressures?
Clog drain? Does it have a float shut off wired wrong, to turning off the blower? Also could be a bad blower with dead spot or capacitor.
A float in the drain will shut down the entire system not just the blower, if it is correctly installed.
Going back to do the stat will be a good chance for follow up. Let us know.
Had A nest do that to me ! Would not bring the blower on ! It was crazy though it was a board . Intermittently would drop out on the board . Lol unit was working fine on 2nd call back to job . Installed board and it did it while I was there
Nordyne, York, micro-channels... run away as much as you can! That's what an old HVAC technician told me once... (too bad Trane is going that direction as well)
Unit is hecho en mexico
Ductwork?
I totally agree i don't like txv
I thought i had a txv problem on a unit that had a long line set. I don't know, I couldn't find anything wrong, me and the other tech were kind of lost. but we did let it defrost completely and for sure on the second call, it's seems like the lady in the office left the unit running all night (on not auto) and there was high humidity that week. I'm still not that sure😬🤣🤔
I am a former officer witch over become a hvac systems the pay is not good hvac is a good thing to do .
I was thinking it can be a txv.
TXV are crap! Keep it piston!
That would be a good slogan for a Tee shirt. 😂😂
Wow same place what is wrong with their condensers and also it’s viberating so much
