Wow, I was at that 1980 finals game 6 in philly , 14 years old. I (and everybody else there that night) thought that with Kareem out the 76ers were gonna extend the series... Magic broke my heart that night but he was incredible in that game as he would be in many, many more.

How was it to watch Magic live? It must have been amazing. I wasn't alive at that time, but I guess it was awesome to watch it live. Magic Johnson was an transcendental basketball player, revolutionizing the NBA with showtime play ☺

@@fredrikandredahl-andersen2757 It was unreal. The hype before the game was that Magic was going to "play center" to replace Kareem that night so of course we all thought "he's good but not THAT good. A rookie? no way" but Magic was unstoppable that night. Of course he didn't stay in the paint all night, he was everywhere. It was the first time I saw a player seemingly taking over a game singlehandedly live like that, a rookie for goodness sakes! Whoever gave him that nickname was spot on. He put the team on his back and the Lakers won.

@@keifer39 wow! That sounds amazing ☺ did he have a killer instinct like Jordan, bird, kobe etc? I have heard that magic was a clutch performer. Certainly, he was clutch the night you mentioned. 👌 I think he hit a game winner in the 1987 finals with the iconic baby hook.

    • @keifer39

@@fredrikandredahl-andersen2757 Killer instinct? absolutely, no question. He was the captain of the team that night and he took charge. Coaching from the floor, constantly giving direction to his teammates. A rookie! it was amazing. The thing is game 7 was going to be in LA and Kareem was more than likely going to play so we went there thinking the Sixers were going to take full advantage of Kareem being out to even the series. The Lakers were favored to win the series so with the loss of Kareem the thought of turning this into a one game series gave us hope, but Magic was a true killer that night. If I recall correctly we were tied at 60 at the half thanks to a Daryl Dawkins dunk just as time expired but Magic got some help from Jamal Wilkes in the third and Magic went nuts when it counted towards the end of the 4th so yes, he for sure had the killer instinct. I expected the loss of Kareem to make a difference but it sparked a fire in Magic that was amazing to see regardless of the loss. As rumored Philly fans can be "enthusiastic" when things aren't going our way, (especially back then) but my brother and I weren't even mad on the subway home... we were disappointed of course but even more amazed at what Magic did that night. Been a fan of his ever since.

Wow! That is definitely something to remember . I saw the Lakers play the Phoenix suns in 1987 or 88 . I vividly remember sitting court side and just being blown away by the height of everyone. I did go to a lot of UNLV Rebel games during that same time frame, but I just don’t recall being as impressed with the height of players. Maybe it was Kareem who just shocked me.

Great call out on Magic Johnson playing center in 1980 Game 6 as one of the greatest performances ever. Losing the NBA's highest scoring player AND playing out of position. Magic and Bird made the game popular again in the States. MJ made the game popular in the world. Magic and Bird are still my favourite players. In Australia our ABC used to play the games in the middle of the night so my brother and I would record them and watch them before school the next morning. He was a Celtics fan I was a Lakers fan. In the 90's the ABC stopped telecasting the NBA so we both lost interest in it. Now we have youtube and I'm remembering all the guys from the 80's again. Plus we had the Lakers vs Celtics computer game from 88 so used to know all the guys from all the teams.

@@22copes thank you for the information. In your opinion, who was better. Magic or bird? :) it's true that magic and bird made it popular nationally in the U. S. And btw, did Magic Johnson have a killer instinct like Jordan , Kobe and bird? ☺ I'm just really interested in learning basketball history. Especially in the 80s. And isn't it true that TV ratings for NBA was down in the 70s? Sorry for many questions lol 😂 👌

    • @22copes
      @22copes 4 года назад +3

@@fredrikandredahl-andersen2757 Just interested to know if you're from Scandinavia with a name like that? There are way better people on youtube that can answer those questions better than I. But since you asked my opinion.
Magic is was and always be my favourite player. He did have the killer instinct. As can be seen in the 80-s finals against the 76's without Kareem. Early to mid 80's Magic was in an awkward spot as the Lakers already had a superstar Kareem, who was a known game winner. As to who I think is better. I have them both at number 1. At the end of the day its a superfluous question some days I feel like watching Bird highlights other days Magic. But this rivalry is what made the NBA popular again.
I wasn't around in the 70's but from the books I've read and things I've seen fans were disillusioned with the NBA, drugs were everywhere. The whole race thing was a problem middle white America had no one to barrack for. Games weren't televised or if they were it was a delayed Telecast
When Bird went to the Celtics they had a handful of old star players past their prime but no superstar. Bird became that guy. Bird realised quickly that he was the go to guy when the game was on the line in the final few minutes.
Magic was that guy without Kareem, with Kareem. You know the saying a star team will always beat a team of stars? Well that was the Lakers it's hard to have 2 bulls in the 1 pen. In the 84 finals I believe if the team gave Magic the responsibility to make the game winning shot they would of had the chance (you can see several times that he was open and still trying to get the ball to Kareem) but I could be completely wrong thats just my opinion. Magic I don't think was in the right frame of mind because he was looking for the pass instead of the shot. In 87 Magic proved that he could be a Big Game winner with the rolling hook shot.
There are 2 reasons why I rate both Magic and Bird over Jordan. Both players could involve the whole team and make them all play better. But Bird and Magic could still dominate the game with a low scoring night, they can still win when only scoring something like 15 points, they'd just do it with assists and rebounds. Jordan was a scorer a very, very impressive scorer. It wasn't until Jordan learnt he could use his teammates and had Pippen as a wingman that he started to win. (after Bird and Magic retired) You could argue the 90-91 finals but Magic dragged a depleted Lakers side to the finals against Jordan that year but was kind of fitting like a passing of the torch from an 80's superstar to what would be the 90's superstar. Jordan couldn't involve the whole team like Magic and Bird could. Sorry for such a long reply and I hope others will help you with their opinions. I know I've only touched on a small amount of content that you asked. On a side note when I used to visit my ex's family in Italy they didn't speak English and I didn't speak Italian but the only bonding her dad I could do was with 80's basketball.

There was definitely a carryover of Celtic pride in the 80s from the great Russell teams of 60s and the Havlicek, cowens, JoJo champions of 74 and 76. La and Boston were even with each other in reg season wins and championships in birds first 7 years. I think Celtics win in 87 if Len Bias survived and mchale does not break his foot

Then again, probably could say the same for those 60s Celtics. I mean c'mon, were they really THAT good to win that many championships in a row!?!?! Willing to bet Auerbach had connections that weren't necessarily "kosher" to the game itself. Someday, someone's gonna spill the beans about the whole damn NBA operation in a "tell-all to end-all" book that will change people's perceptions of pro sports for good...

This series changed when Kevin Mchale took out Kurt Rambis in ....... game 4? I believe? Magic was f**king up because that 80's Boston team was more physical & mentally tougher than the then Showtime Lakers. Larry Legend OWNED Ervin in this series Magic did not throw the game.

The comments on here are stupid. The Celtics made the key plays and thus won. Magic was a great player but so was Bird. Magic was driven after losing this series. Not the look of someone who threw games.

Celtics had to deal with the 76ers, Pistons and later the Bulls. Lakers breezed through the West every year except 81 Magic got hurt and 86 the Rockets had a big upset. If the Celtics were in the West they would've had more Championships.

Damn that was a shitty play from Magic what was he doing? He just ran the clock out like and idiot but still top 5 to ever play but this was tough to watch not just that but the other one as well where he just gave the ball to a Celtic player and miss two free throws and to game winning short in his face and two turnovers wow talk about a bad finals

Jordan and Magic got in trouble for shaving points and throwing games. That's why Jordan had to leave basketball after his first 3 peat and later Magic had to fake HIV. Boston had a good team but Magic Lakers were way more talented and faster than Boston. Not even close. That first win by Boston against Lakers was fixed. The 2 best top ten players of all time were on the Lakers team. Magic and Kareem. Boston didn't have anyone who could guard James worthy or Magic on the open floor. Magic nor Worthy were chokers. The game was fixed. Lakers were the favorite to win. I am sure Magic made millions for throwing that game. Magic and Worthy were tight.
